Sacramento River Cats scrap "Gold Diggers" alternate kit, saying it "clearly missed the mark"
SACRAMENTO – Just about 24 hours after announcing a
new alternative jersey this season
, the Sacramento River Cats have scrapped the idea.
The MiLB team announced its Sacramento Gold Diggers alternate kit on Thursday, saying it was inspired by California's Gold Rush history.
The jerseys featured a new logo mascot named Dugg the Miner. The black and gold color scheme featured a hat with an "S" and a pickaxe with a handle made of a baseball bat.
But on Friday, the team announced that it will not be using the identity.
"Our recent marketing campaign for an alternative identity clearly missed the mark," the River Cats said in a statement. "Our intention was to creatively reference the rich history of Sacramento and gold country, but our approach was wrong, and we are sorry for the mistake."
The team had planned to debut the jersey on April 19.

Aggie Heroics: Former Texas A&M outfielder walks off MiLB showdown
Aggie Heroics: Former Texas A&M outfielder walks off MiLB showdown Former Texas A&M Aggie Braden Montgomery continued to display his highlight-worthy abilities at the plate by driving a two-RBI walk-off double to secure the Chicago White Sox High-A affiliate Winston-Salem Dash a 5-4 victory on Sunday night. In April and May, the Madison, Mississippi, native has recorded 39 RBI in 42 contests. What better way to cap off the National Italian Beef Day celebration than a Montgomery game-winner in the bottom of the ninth inning? After transferring from Stanford in 2023, the former unanimous First-Team All-American decorated Blue Bell Park in Bryan-College Station, Texas, with 27 home runs and 85 RBI through 61 contests before suffering a season-ending injury. The switch hitter, who also happens to pitch, was then drafted No. 12 by the Boston Red Sox in the 2024 MLB Draft. As the No. 8-ranked player on MLB's Pipeline rankings, Montgomery expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to practice amongst a Texas A&M roster filled with left-handed pitchers. "Something that I was really excited to come to A&M and experience was, we've got a lot of lefties. So in all of our inner squads, I was able to take a lot of right-handed at-bats. It was really helpful to see all of those pitchers in preparation for the season. And at that time, I was in a really good spot right-handed, so I'm excited to see more of that," Montgomer told the MLB Pipeline Podcast in July last year. Montgomery is now tearing up the minor leagues with incredible outings like Sunday night's walk-off victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades. Since entering the MiLB this year, Montgomery has recorded 47 hits, including seven homers. His next appearance on the diamond will take place on Tuesday, May 27, as the Dash begin a six-game road stretch against the Hub City Spartan Burgers.
