Books-A-Million's 24th Coffee for the Troops Campaign Surpasses 80,000 Bags Donated
Biannual donation effort brings total coffee donations to over 1 million bags for deployed service members
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., May 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Books-A-Million proudly announces the completion of its 24th Coffee for the Troops campaign, a biannual initiative that sends comforting cups of Joe Muggs coffee to deployed U.S. service members around the world.
This spring's campaign exceeded expectations with 73,000 bags donated by customers and associates—126% to goal. Thanks to a 10% match contribution from long-time roasting partner Royal Cup Coffee, the total donation climbs to 80,837 bags, with a retail value of over 1 million dollars—the highest in the campaign's history.
"For deployed service members, the comforts of home—like a good cup of coffee—are more than just a luxury. They're a reminder that they're not forgotten," said Amy Palmer, President & CEO of Soldiers' Angels. "Thanks to the ongoing generosity of Books-A-Million and its customers, we're able to deliver that comfort directly into the hands of those serving far from home. The fact that this year's campaign saw the highest number of bags donated since 2022 and reached the highest retail value ever is an incredible testament to the power of community support."
Since its inception, the Coffee for the Troops program has resulted in more than 1 million bags of donated coffee, thanks to the generosity of Books-A-Million customers, associates, and partners like Royal Cup.
"Coffee for the Troops is a powerful example of what happens when booksellers, customers, and partners come together for a cause that truly matters," said Scott Kappler, Executive Vice President of Store Operations at Books-A-Million. "It's about more than coffee—it's about delivering warmth, connection, and appreciation to those who serve."

China's Chokehold on This Obscure Mineral Threatens the West's Militaries
China's strict controls on the export of heat-resistant magnets made with rare earth minerals have exposed a major vulnerability in the U.S. military supply chain. Without these magnets, the United States and its allies in Europe will struggle to refill recently depleted inventories of military hardware. For more than a decade, the United States has failed to develop an alternative to China's supply of a specific kind of rare earth crucial for the manufacture of magnets for missiles, fighter jets, smart bombs and a lot of other military gear. Rare earth minerals are a central issue in the trade talks between the United States and China now underway in London. China produces the entire world's supply of samarium, a particularly obscure rare earth metal used almost entirely in military applications. Samarium magnets can withstand temperatures hot enough to melt lead without losing their magnetic force. They are essential for withstanding the heat of fast-moving electric motors in cramped spaces like the nose cones of missiles. On April 4, China halted exports of seven kinds of rare earth metals, as well as magnets made from them. China controls most of the world's supply of these metals and magnets. China's Ministry of Commerce declared that these materials had both civilian and military uses, and any further exports would be allowed only with specially issued licenses. The move, according to the ministry, would 'safeguard national security' and 'fulfill international obligations such as nonproliferation.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Crisis Clean Team Wins 2025 Global Recognition Award for Compassion-Driven Cleanup and Community Impact
MINNEAPOLIS, June 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Crisis Clean Team has been awarded a 2025 Global Recognition Award, honoring their extraordinary commitment to turning moments of trauma into pathways for healing. The Minnesota-based biohazard remediation and drug decontamination company received perfect scores across all service categories, recognized for their unmatched compassion, community partnerships, and a business model built on dignity, not dollars. "We're called in when life feels overwhelming, and we show up ready to help," said Amber Kramer, Founder of Crisis Clean Team. "This award is a reflection of the heart our team puts into every home, every family, every story." What sets Crisis Clean Team apart is a simple but powerful belief: every person deserves to be treated with care, even in life's most difficult moments. Whether responding to a suicide, drug contamination, hoarding conditions, or severe property neglect, the team approaches every situation with empathy and professionalism. That commitment has earned them a consistent five-star rating from clients who never expected to need this kind of help but were relieved to have found a team they could trust. But their impact goes far beyond cleanup. The company partners with local organizations working to end homelessness, donating recovered, usable items from hoarding cases to veterans transitioning out of homelessness—transforming what would be waste into resources for rebuilding lives. "To us, giving those items a second life means giving someone else a sense of hope," Kramer said. Crisis Clean Team's mission is lived out through every team member. Their Director of Operations brings bilingual skills and years of experience working with youth in crisis. Their lead technician, a former veteran caregiver, brings a deep understanding of veteran trauma and care. Together, they deliver not just technical cleanup, but comfort, trust, and support when it matters most. The company also donates time and resources to support causes close to their heart, including mental health and at-risk youth. As the award panel noted: "Crisis Clean Team doesn't see community engagement as optional—it's the foundation of how they operate." This award confirms what their clients already know: Crisis Clean Team isn't just cleaning spaces—they're restoring hope.
