Kaamatan, Gawai Festivals Bolster Bornean Unity
PENAMPANG, June 28 (Bernama) -- The Kaamatan and Gawai festivals are not mere celebrations of gratitude because they also serve as a platform to enhance the cultural bond between the people of Sabah and Sarawak, said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He said that the close ties between the two states must be preserved, as they constitute the core of unity and harmony among the multiracial communities in East Malaysia.
'Sabah and Sarawak not only share borders but also a Bornean identity steeped in culture, customs, and traditions. We must enhance this bond for our progress and well-being,' he said in a speech at the Kaamatan-Gawai 2025 gala dinner here tonight.

'As the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, I will not tolerate anyone who abuses their position for personal gain,' the King added. Sultan Ibrahim also expressed concern over the culture of social media use among military personnel and reminded them not to share everything online, particularly information related to troop deployments, unit locations and other sensitive details. His Majesty said the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel showed how both sides have easily exploited information obtained through technology companies, smart applications and social media to launch attacks. 'I want this to stop immediately. Use sound judgment and refrain from disclosing unnecessary information to the public. It is better to be cautious now than to regret later,' His Majesty said, Bernama reported. The King congratulated the 509 cadet officers who completed their training and reminded them that a military career demands great sacrifices, personal strength, honesty and unwavering loyalty to the King and country. His Majesty also called on them to be leaders who uphold discipline, train their personnel effectively and prioritise their welfare, while also expressing appreciation to the parents who entrusted their beloved children to serve in the armed forces. The ceremony was also attended by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Khaled Nordin, Chief of Defence Forces Jen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, Army chief Jen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain and Air Force chief Jen Datuk Muhamad Norazlan Aris.

Russia to support Malaysia's nuclear energy development
All smiles: Fadillah taking a group photo during a gathering with Malaysian students in Moscow, Russia. — Bernama MOSCOW: Russia has agreed to continue cooperating with Malaysia to build the country's capacity in nuclear energy development, covering institutional, human capital, technical, commercial and legal aspects, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said Russia's extensive experience in nuclear energy should be considered as Malaysia looks to enhance its future energy security. He said one of the main objectives of the trip was to strengthen energy cooperation between the two countries. In addition to existing cooperation in coal imports, Fadillah said he and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk also discussed the potential for collaboration in the field of nuclear energy. 'Russia possesses advanced technology in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. 'The country's experience in nuclear energy technology could support Malaysia's aspirations under the National Energy Transition Roadmap,' he said, Bernama reported. He also held a meeting on Friday with Russian state nuclear firm Rosatom's director-general Alexey Likhachev, with discussions covering technical and operational matters including legal frameworks, technology transfer and workforce training. According to Fadillah, the meeting opened the door for direct dialogue between Malaysia's technical agencies and Rosatom to assess potential areas of nuclear cooperation such as the strengthening and modernisation of the power grid, which would in turn have a positive impact on Asean Power Grid cooperation. He said the Cabinet had, in principle, approved the consideration of nuclear energy as part of Malaysia's future energy mix. 'This is to address the current limitations in baseload energy supply. We are trying to reduce our dependence on coal and gas, but supply remains a challenge. 'In addition, we are facing constraints in hydroelectric generation due to limited water resources. Globally, many now see nuclear power as an option that must be considered,' he added. Fadillah stressed that the government must first undertake a thorough study of nuclear technology, including public engagement. 'Public support is critical. This process must involve various ministries, agencies and non-government organisations to provide clear explanations. 'It can only proceed once an international agreement is signed and accepted by the majority of the public. This is the first step in that direction,' he said. Fadillah, who concluded his four-day working visit to Russia yesterday, also visited Uzbekistan from June 21 to 24. The Deputy Prime Minister's visit to Russia followed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to the country from May 13 to 16, aimed at enhancing and exploring new areas of cooperation between Malaysia and Russia.

AI legislation must be expedited to tackle negative impact, says Deputy Digital Minister
SHAH ALAM: Specific legislation governing artificial intelligence (AI) must be expedited due to the growing negative impact of the technology, particularly in fraud-related crimes, says Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong. The Deputy Digital Minister said he was informed that between 2020 and 2024, AI-related crimes have resulted in an estimated global loss of around RM5bil. "I expect the AI legislation to be tabled this year so that we can tighten control and outline appropriate penalties for those who misuse this technology," he said when met at the Gawai Kitai Ngiling Bidai 2025 celebration, here Saturday (June 28). He was responding to questions regarding the misuse of AI technology, including incidents involving high-ranking government officials including former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani and Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar. Acryl Sani and Kumar had previously denied appearing in separate viral videos circulating on social media, which showed individuals resembling both of them allegedly receiving aid from a person bearing the title "Datuk". He said in response to this matter, his ministry is actively conducting awareness campaigns through the Digital Malaysia Tour programme to engage and educate the public, especially in rural areas, so that they do not fall victim to AI-related fraud. "I have gone to Sabah, the interior of Kapit in Sarawak, and Penang to raise awareness among rural communities about the latest tactics and modus operandi of these criminals," he said. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo was previously reported as saying that a full report on the proposed regulations and the possible enactment of specific legislation for AI would be submitted to his ministry by the end of this month. - Bernama
