'Definitely Heard...': Bavuma Reveals Australia's 'Chokers' Sledge In WTC Final
Last Updated:
Temba Bavuma has revealed that Australians tried sledging them with the 'chokers' tag during the WTC final.
World Test Championship (WTC)-winning South African captain Temba Bavuma has revealed that the Australians tried sledging his team with the 'chokers' tag during the final at Lord's on Saturday (June 14). He said one player from the Pat Cummins-led team tried to get into their head about a batting collapse, but his batting partner, Aiden Markram, countered that by asking the skipper to 'lock in' after every over.
South Africa needed 69 runs with eight wickets to spare on Day 4 to win the title, thanks to a brilliant 143-run partnership between Bavuma and Markram the previous night. Bavuma got out near the start of the day, but Markram stood steady and strung brief partnerships with Tristan Stubbs and David Bedingham. The latter and Kyle Verreynne finished the job in the extended first session.
Markram, who won the Player of the Match award for his 136 (207) said it's 'quite a big thing' for his team to get rid of the tag once and for all.
'It would be great to not have to hear it again, that's for sure," he said. 'In terms of it motivating you, I mean, there's always going to be external things that can motivate you, but it's not your sole purpose for playing. To have got the job done and to literally have got the job done and to get rid of that is quite a big thing for this team."

FIH Pro League 2025: India women lose to Australia 1-2 after late error
The Indian women's hockey team came agonisingly close to holding world No. 3 Australia to a draw, only to be undone by a late defensive lapse in their FIH Pro League 2025 encounter on Sunday at London's Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. India led for more than half the match and looked set to share the points until Australia converted a last-minute penalty corner to snatch a 2-1 win. Indian coach Janneke Schopman later reflected that the team showed tremendous spirit but needed to manage key moments better. Early Spark Gives India the Edge India made a dream start, with Vaishnavi Phalke finding the net in just the third minute through a brilliant field goal. Her quick anticipation and cool finish gave India a surprise early lead. The Indian midfield, buoyed by the early goal, played with composure, denying Australia any clear chances in the first half. With resolute defending and good ball circulation, India entered half-time with a deserved 1-0 lead, showcasing one of their best starts in the league so far. Australia Strike Back in Second Half The Australians came out with more urgency after the break, and it paid off in the 37th minute. Midfielder Amy Lawton capitalised on a momentary lapse in India's marking to level the scores. The equaliser shifted the momentum slightly in Australia's favour, but India responded with strong counters and stayed in the contest. Despite some close chances for both sides, the deadlock continued deep into the final quarter. Final Minute Heartbreak Just when it seemed India would earn a morale-boosting draw, disaster struck. In the final minute, Lexie Pickering converted a penalty corner variation, catching the Indian defence off guard. The goal, timed at 60:00, sealed India's second straight loss to Australia after Friday's 2-3 defeat. India now turn their focus to Tuesday's match against Argentina, aiming to bounce back with sharper execution in the dying stages.

Did Virat Kohli ghost AB de Villiers? South African legend admits 'blunder', says 'relieved when he started talking again'
File Pic: Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers AB de Villiers has revealed that Virat Kohli did not speak to him for months after the South African great made a public blunder in early 2024 about the Indian star's personal life. Kohli eventually resumed contact later that year, much to de Villiers' relief. Speaking to de Villiers said he was relieved to be back on speaking terms with Kohli. 'Thank goodness! Because I did have a bit of a footfall not too long ago when they were expecting their second child. So, I was very relieved when he started talking to me again,' he said. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The incident dates back to early 2024, when Kohli had withdrawn from the home Test series against England, citing personal reasons. While speculation mounted, de Villiers claimed on his YouTube channel that Kohli had taken the break because his wife, Anushka Sharma , was expecting their second child. Days later, he issued a public apology, calling it 'a terrible mistake.' Poll Do you think AB de Villiers' public comment affected his friendship with Virat Kohli? Yes, it strained their friendship. No, it was a minor issue. 'Family comes first and then Cricket… That information was wrong and not true at all,' de Villiers had said in a separate interview with Dainik Bhaskar. 'Whatever the reason for his break, I hope he comes back stronger.' While the claim turned out to be accurate — the couple welcomed their son Akaay on February 15 — the premature disclosure strained their friendship. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo 'South Africa kept fighting, deserved champions': Pat Cummins Reflecting on Kohli's decision to retire from Test cricket, de Villiers added, 'He went through a bit of a patch and wanted to bounce some ideas off me...
