Germany charges Syrian juvenile over Taylor Swift concert plot
BERLIN - Germany has charged a Syrian juvenile with supporting a foreign terrorist organization for helping to plan a foiled attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna last year, the prosecutor general said in a statement on Friday.
Identified as Mohammad A, the suspect helped the would-be attacker by translating Arabic bomb-building instructions and putting him in contact with a member of the Islamic State militia online, according to the charges against him.
Police made multiple arrests over a suspected plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert in the Austrian capital's Ernst Happel Stadium, prompting the cancellation of all three of her shows there in August last year.
"Mohammad A has adhered to the ideology of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) since April 2024 at the latest," the statement said.
"Between mid-July and August 2024, he was in contact with a young Austrian who was planning a bomb attack on a concert by singer Taylor Swift in Vienna."
Austria's coalition government earlier this month agreed on a plan to enable police to monitor suspects' secure messaging in order to thwart militant attacks, ending what security officials have said is a rare and dangerous blind spot for a European Union country. REUTERS

"Of course we are ready to host our allies." Pevkur was speaking after Britain, a NATO member, announced it would buy at least 12 F-35A jets capable of carrying nuclear warheads and that they would join NATO's airborne nuclear mission. Asked about Pevkur's comments, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said such a move would be an obvious threat to Russia. "Of course it would be an immediate danger," Peskov told a journalist from Russia's Life news outlet. He said the statement was one of many "absurd thoughts" voiced by politicians in the Baltic region, which comprises Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. "We have practically no relations with the Baltic republics because it is very difficult to make them worse," he said. Russian missile attack kills five in Ukraine's southeast
KYIV - A Russian missile attack on Friday killed at least five people and wounded more than 20 in the industrial city of Samar in Ukraine's southeast, officials said, the second strike on the city in three days. At least four of the wounded were in severe condition and were taken to hospital, regional governor Serhiy Lysak said on the Telegram messaging app. Officials gave no immediate details on damage in the city, where an attack on an unidentified infrastructure facility on Tuesday killed two people. Hundreds of kilometres to the south, in the Kherson region, authorities urged residents on Friday to prepare for extended periods without power after a Russian attack hit a key energy facility. Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on Telegram that "Russians decided to plunge the region into darkness". In recent weeks Russia has stepped up attacks on Ukrainian cities, particularly its capital Kyiv, more than three years into the war that followed its full-scale invasion. The Ukrainian air force said Russia had launched 363 long-range drones and eight missiles overnight into Friday, targeting a small western city of Starokostiantyniv, home to an important air base. PHOTO: THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK 13-year-old en route to S'pore dies after being flung from car on highway in Melaka MELAKA - A 13-year-old girl was killed after being flung from a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and landing on the opposite lane in a road tragedy along KM189.1 of the North-South Expressway in Jasin. Jasin OCPD Supt Mohamad Rusli Mat identified the victim as Iris Sofea Mohamed Siddiq Khan, who died at the scene following the incident at 7.54am on June 27. Preliminary investigations revealed that the MPV, which was travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Singapor e, suffered a burst front right tyre. 'The 36-year-old driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle, which struck a guardrail along the expressway. The impact of the collision caused the victim to be ejected from the vehicle, landing on the opposite lane, where she was hit by another car,' he said on June 27. Supt Mohamad Rusli added that there were nine passengers in the MPV, aged between 63 and four years old, at the time of the incident. 'The deceased's 10-year-old sister sustained serious injuries, while other passengers suffered minor injuries. The drivers of both vehicles were not injured,' he said. Supt Mohamad Rusli said the incident is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Meanwhile, Melaka Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman, Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem, who visited the victims, confirmed that all the injured were receiving treatment at Hospital Melaka and Hospital Jasin. 'The tragedy resulted in the death of the driver's 13-year-old daughter and serious injuries to his 10-year-old daughter, who is being treated in the red zone of Hospital Melaka,' he said.
