Question : Along Moenamanu Street in Mililani, fronting Kipapa playground, there is a growing pile of illegally dumped items. There are two sofas, one mattress, and the newest addition is a toilet ! Currently, the toilet has feces in it ! This is the area where Mililani Middle School students wait for their morning bus and get dropped off in the afternoon. This is adjacent to a playground where young children play. It is absolutely unsafe, unsanitary and unacceptable ! I made a report on the city and county illegal-dumping report site. It has been reported to the Mililani Town Association. I am wondering what needs to be done to get this rubbish removed. It started sometime in February, and it is now the end of March. Please let me know what we can do to get this taken care of. It's a truly big Auwe !
Answer : You did your part by reporting illegal dumping to the city, and we've followed up to confirm a complaint was received. We expect this junk will be removed shortly, but suggest that you follow up with the city if it's not gone by the end of the week. We received your question Friday, emailed the city Monday and received the following response Tuesday from Harold Nedd, a spokesperson for the city Department of Customer Services :
'The Department of Customer Services tracks complaints that have been formally reported to the city via email (), phone call (808-768-4381 ) or via the Honolulu 311 app.
'The department's Customer Care Section found the complaint you referenced listed under a nearby street, not Moena manu. Our records show that the complaint was submitted via the city's 311 app by an anonymous customer, and it was routed directly to the Department of Facility Maintenance's Division of Road Maintenance as Illegal Dumping for Non-Residential.
'The complaint was recorded as case number CAS-76148-B2C4R9 ; submitted on 3 /20 /25 ; and the case remains open.
'As for a follow-up, customers are asked to allow departments 10 business days for a response ; however, if a customer contacts our Customer Care Section for an update, an immediate follow-up request is made to the relevant department.'

When we followed up with you about the city's response, you said you had mentioned Moenamanu Street in your complaint, so perhaps more than one person reported this mess. The street, which runs between Kuahelani Avenue and Kipa pa Drive, is near Kipapa Neighborhood Park. At any rate, the city department responsible for disposal is aware of the problem.
We also called the Mililani Town Association and left a message for the general manager, who was out of the office Tuesday. Although the city is the primary contact for this problem, we want to ask the association about any concerns or suggestions it has regarding illegal dumping.
Q : Some time ago Kokua Line printed the number of people who had gotten retro active payments under the Social Security Fairness Act. I still not have received mine. I am already in the system, so I didn't need to apply. When will they finish issuing back payments ?
A : By early November, according to the Social Security Administration, which updated its website Tuesday to say that staff are now manually updating records for complex cases, which take much longer to process than simpler cases that were expedited using automation and have been paid. The agency will release retroactive benefits and send new monthly benefit amounts as it processes each case 'with the expectation that all beneficiary records will be updated by early November, ' the website says. The agency began paying retroactive payments in late February, and by March 28 had automatically processed 2.3 million cases, or 75 % of the accounts that needed to be adjusted, it said. Bonfire's new software lets users build their own social communities, free from platform control
Bonfire Social, a new framework for building communities on the open social web, launched on Thursday during the FediForum online conference. While Bonfire Social is a federated app, meaning it's powered by the same underlying protocol as Mastodon (ActivityPub), it's designed to be more modular and more customizable. That means communities on Bonfire have more control over how the app functions, which features and defaults are in place, and what their own roadmap and priorities will include. There's a decidedly disruptive bent to the software, which describes itself as a place where "all living beings thrive and communities flourish, free from private interest and capitalistic control." In other words, its mission is to build social software where people get to make the decisions, not big tech platform makers like Meta or Google. The organization itself runs as a nonprofit funded by donations and grants, and it doesn't take venture capital. Its code is open source, and it works in collaboration with the communities and researchers that use it to build and enhance online digital spaces. Bonfire Social, now offered as a 1.0 Release Candidate ahead of the public release, is just one representation of what Bonfire offers. Bonfire calls it a "flavor." Each flavor is a preconfigured bundle of Bonfire extensions, features, and defaults, sort of like a starting template. When a community opts to run a particular "flavor," it gets to govern the app as it sees fit, adding its own extensions and determining its own roadmap for product changes. This puts the social software back under users' control, instead of being subject to the whims of a platform maker with an ever-changing feature sets and algorithms. The organization is already developing other flavors like Bonfire Community and Open Science, and the Bonfire software lets any other community create their own version. In Bonfire Social, users will recognize familiar features, like feeds and tools to follow users, share posts, create user profiles, flag or block content, and more. However, it also offers other tools and features that traditional social networks may not have, like tools for customizing feeds, support for nested discussions, the ability to host multiple profiles per user, rich-text posts, and access control features. Custom feeds are a key differentiation between Bonfire and traditional social media apps. Though the idea of following custom feeds is something that's been popularized by newer social networks like Bluesky or social browsers like Flipboard's Surf, the tools to actually create those feeds are maintained by third parties. Bonfire instead offers its own custom feed-building tools in a simple interface that doesn't require users to understand coding. To build feeds, users can filter and sort content by type, date, engagement level, source instance, and more, including something it calls "circles." Those who lived through the Google+ era of social networks may be familiar with the concept of Circles. On Google's social network, users organized contacts into groups, called Circles, for optimized sharing. That concept lives on at Bonfire, where a circle represents a list of people. That can be a group of friends, a fan group, local users, organizers at a mutual aid group, or anything else users can come up with. These circles are private by default but can be shared with others. Another unique feature on Bonfire Social is Boundaries, which let you control who can see or engage with your content. For instance, you could share a post with a number of your circles, but only allow one specific circle's members to comment. Bonfire also supports threaded conversations (nested discussions) where replies can branch out into their own sub-threads. This can be useful for communities where deeper discussions and collaboration are more valuable than those where everyone competes for attention. Plus, Bonfire users can customize the app using one of the 16 built-in themes, or they can design their own layout and pick their own colors and fonts. Accounts on Bonfires can also host multiple profiles that have their own followers, content, and settings. This could be useful for those who simply prefer to have both public and private profiles, but also for those who need to share a given profile with others -- like a profile for a business, a publication, a collective, or a project team. Other features available at launch include PWA support for mobile devices, community blocklists, custom emoji support, full-text search (with opt out), direct messages, private group discussions (also with nested threads), and more. Extensions, which add different features, can be enabled or disabled by both admins and users. Admins simply decide what the defaults are. That means users could turn on or off features they don't like, even core features such as likes or boosts (the federated version of the retweet/repost). Because Bonfire is built on ActivityPub, it also federates with Mastodon, Peertube, Mobilizon, and others. The software is meant to be self-installed, though work to develop a hosting network is under way. For those who just want to kick the tires, a demo instance is available.

Immigrant rights groups sue to invalidate Trump administration's El Salvador prison deal
A coalition of immigrant rights groups on Thursday sued to invalidate the Trump administration's deal to house detainees in a notorious prison in El Salvador, saying the arrangement to move migrant detainees outside the reach of U.S. courts violates the U.S. Constitution. The lawsuit in federal court in Washington, D.C., notes that the administration has argued that those sent to El Salvador are beyond the reach of U.S. courts and no longer have access to due process rights or other U.S. constitutional guarantees. The deal, the plaintiffs allege, 'is contrary to law. And it was entered into without any legal basis.' The administration has sent hundreds of migrants to El Salvador, including some it accuses of being members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. The administration in March agreed to pay $6 million for El Salvador to house 300 migrants. President Donald Trump has said he'd like to eventually send U.S. citizen criminals to the Salvadoran prison, though that'd likely be unconstitutional. The lawsuit notes that the State Department has reported that inmates in El Salvador's prisons may be subject to 'harsh and life-threatening' conditions, torture and lack access to reliable food, water and medical care. The prisons are run by the government of El Salvador's president, Nayib Bukele, who once called himself 'the world's coolest dictator' and has posted images of detainees sent from the U.S. getting marched into his centerpiece prison, the Terrorism Confinement Center, known as CECOT. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In one notorious case cited in the lawsuit, the Trump administration has not returned Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man it deported to El Salvador in violation of a judge's order, saying the man is no longer in its custody. That was the administration's argument when another judge ordered it to halt deportations under an 18th century wartime act — that the deportees were on a plane to El Salvador and outside the legal reach of federal judges. The suit was filed by Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, Immigrant Equality, the California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice and Democracy Forward, which is co-counsel in a separate lawsuit over the initial flights to El Salvador. Thursday's lawsuit says the deal violates the Administrative Procedures Act, which prevents agencies like the State Department, which reached the deal with El Salvador, from undertaking unconstitutional or otherwise illegal acts. In addition to violating the constitution, the suit notes that housing prisoners in El Salvador violates the First Step Act, a law requiring federal prisons to try to house inmates close to home. That law was signed by Trump in 2018.

James Bond Is Back In A Vintage Aston Martin DBS In New '007 First Light' Video Game
The first trailer for "007 First Light," the new James Bond game from IO Interactive, the studio behind the "Hitman" series came out yesterday. Set in a universe separate from the books and films, it's a bit of an origin story for the character, depicting a 26-year-old Bond going on a mission that will take him out of the Royal Navy and grant him his 00 status. We don't know the lead actor for the game yet, but in the trailer Bond kinda looks like Ethan Hunt. I think the game looks pretty awesome both in terms of graphics and gameplay, with a nice visual style and a mix of stealth, gadgetry and combat. But we're really here for the cars, and the three-minute trailer shows what Bond drives in one of the very first shots. Though "007 First Light's" developers say the game isn't based on any previous 007 media, Bond's car is one that has been used in the movies before: An original Aston Martin DBS. Read more: These Are The Dumbest Looking Cars Of All Time, According To You The first-gen DBS was first sold in 1967 as a successor to the DB6, first coming with an inline-6 before a V8 was added in 1969. It was sold until 1972, after which it was replaced by the V8 and Vantage models. George Lazenby's Bond drove a brown 1969 DBS in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," one of my favorites in the franchise. It's not exactly a fun automotive moment, though, as Bond's wife Tracy (played by the spectacular Diana Rigg) is shot and killed through the windshield. That movie's musical theme can be heard in "First Light's" trailer, too. You can also see a DBS being fitted with gadgets in Q's office in the 1971 film "Diamonds Are Forever," and of course its V8 Vantage successor was driven by Timothy Dalton in "The Living Daylights" and Daniel Craig in "No Time To Die." In the game's trailer we see Bond driving fast as hell and drifting the DBS along a mountain pass to chase a villian who's driving a red X150 Jaguar XK, an excellent baddie car choice. The banana yellow paint of Bond's DBS sure seems like a nod to the similarly colored DBS driven by Roger Moore in "The Persuaders," which ran from 1971 to 1972. I don't think this chase scene is just a cutscene, as parts of the trailer make it look like the player will get to do a lot of the driving (and drifting and crashing through fences). There also is a flash of another scene where Bond seems to be driving a garbage truck through a tunnel, and in another moment in Q's office there's a Triumph motorcycle with a flamethrower at the back and what looks like the new Aston Martin Valhalla under a cover. We can also see other real cars like the Land Rover Defender in the background of some scenes, so there's surely other real-life cars in the game as well. "007 First Light" will release in 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Want more like this?
