Noida-Greater Noida Expressway set for ₹8-crore upgradation: Here's why
To improve highway safety, the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway will undergo several new upgrades, including the installation of new signboards, solar-powered reflectors, and fresh lane markings. The decision was taken by the Noida Authority in response to the rising number of accidents on the expressway.
According to a report by The Times of India, the 24-km stretch — 20 km of which falls under the Noida Authority and 4 km under the Greater Noida Authority — will see many upgrades under a development project, estimated at ₹8 crore.
The news report mentioned the improvement work will begin from Sector 14A and extend across the complete expressway. In this regard, a tender has already been issued and interested contractors will have a chance to apply for the same till May 15, 2025.
Importance of the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway
According to the officials, they are taking up the project also because of the importance of the road, as it is a main link between Delhi, Noida and Greater Noida. This expressway also connects the Yamuna Expressway. Notably, this route will become more important once the Noida International Airport in Jewar starts its operations.
As part of the new project, old signboards on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway will be replaced. Solar-powered reflectors will be added to help drivers see lanes and turns better at night. New lane markings will be painted using strong, long-lasting paint. Speed limit signs and rumble strips will also be added at exit points to slow down vehicles and reduce accidents.
Earlier, the Noida Authority found several safety problems during their inspections. 'The expressway is very important for connecting different areas and keeping traffic moving, but we saw many issues,' an official said as quoted by The Times of India.
Cat-eye reflectors, which help drivers see the road at night, were missing in many places. Signs showing where to enter or exit were not clear. In some areas, there were no bollards—short posts used to separate lanes safely.
Survey reveals poor road safety features
To better understand the problems, the authority asked the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies (RCUES) to conduct a detailed survey. RCUES studied traffic during the day and night over two days. The survey found that many lane markings were faded or missing.
The white lines dividing lanes were often too thin or unclear. Many parts of the road did not have important safety features like reflectors, medians, or signboards.
Motorists also found it hard to understand where to safely change lanes or reach nearby sectors. There were no proper kilometre markers either, which made it hard for new or visiting drivers to find their way.
All these issues are expected to be fixed following the safety rules of the Indian Road Congress, which sets the standards for highways in India. Officials said this will make the expressway safer and help traffic flow better.
Signboards for easy access to public toilets
The expressway also has 13-foot overbridges and about 20 public toilets and urinals. These will not be changed, but clear signboards will be added so that people can find them easily, especially at night.
The need for these safety changes became clear after a tragic accident on August 14, 2024. Three students died when their car hit a pole and then a crash barrier. Two of them were sons of a junior engineer working with the authority.

Road to relief: Noida to raze footpath, widen 600m e-way stretch near Prerna Sthal
Noida: Noida Authority will partially raze the footpath, a roadside track and paver blocks near the Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal to widen a 600-metre stretch of the expressway by 5.5 metres. Tailbacks on the Noida to Delhi arm of the carriageway often extend till Mahamaya flyover as the stretch between Sector 95 and DND Flyway loop in front of the Prerna Sthal is currently tapered to make space for its pavement and a U-turn towards Sector 18 near the bird feeding point. Last Dec, it added a lane, about 2 metres wide, by merging the left sidewalk with the DND Flyway Loop until Film City, a 250-metre stretch. Noida Authority CEO Lokesh M said the Authority had sought a no-objection certificate for the road widening from the National Dalit Prerna Sthal Committee, which is responsible for the management, security, and maintenance of memorials, museums, institutions, parks, and gardens, on Sept 26 last year and the clearance was received on June 5. Earlier, a consultant hired by the Noida Authority to find out how the expressway section could be widened had recommended removing a one-metre-wide roadside track, a 1.4-metre-wide footpath with railings, and a 3.1-metre-wide stretch with pavers to widen the carriageway by 5.5 metres. Once ready, the total road width in the stretch will go up from 39.5 metres to 45 metres. MSRDC Proposes 10-Lane Upgrade For Mumbai-Pune Expressway To Ease Growing Traffic

The move comes as a long-term solution to tackle increasing congestion on one of India's busiest and most expensive expressways. 'This is an upgrade from our earlier proposal to make it an eight-lane facility. The latest plan will cost around Rs 1,420 crore," said Anilkumar Gaikwad, MSRDC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, on Friday. Gaikwad told The Times of India that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being finalised and will be submitted to the state government for approval. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, India's first and oldest access-controlled expressway, was inaugurated in 2002 and stretches 94.6 km. Built by the MSRDC at an initial cost of about Rs 1.63 lakh crore, the expressway connects Mumbai with Pune — a key educational and industrial hub in Maharashtra. Currently, the expressway sees around 65,000 vehicles on weekdays and over 1 lakh on weekends. With traffic volume growing by nearly 5–6% each year, MSRDC believes that expanding the corridor is essential to keep pace with demand. Presently, a trip between the two cities takes about two hours under normal conditions, but weekend congestion often extends travel time by an hour. The proposed expansion is expected to reduce this delay significantly, offering smoother travel even during peak periods. The total estimated cost for the entire widening project is Rs 14,260 crore, with construction costs alone around Rs 8,440 crore. Interestingly, MSRDC plans to fund the project through toll collections instead of relying on government funds. 'We will bank on toll collection," Gaikwad said, adding that the financing model — either Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) or annuity — will be decided later. The current toll agreement is valid until 2045, and MSRDC may seek an extension if the expansion is approved.
