Couple's dog injured in cougar attack while camping in Olympic National Park
A couple camping near the Dukabush River Trail in Olympic National Park says their dog was attacked by a cougar on Friday night.
Lucas and Kathryn Rogers tell KIRO 7 News that at around 7 p.m., they were setting up camp for the night about a half mile from the park boundary when they heard their Labradoodle barking at something through the trees.
'He started barking...I walked out to the trail, looked around, didn't hear anything, didn't see anything. I was probably about 100 yards from camp,' Lucas said.
'Then I hear my wife screaming...I had no clue what was going on. I come running back and looked over and saw our dog pinned to the ground by a cougar,' he said.
As avid backpackers, the couple says they had never had an encounter with an animal like this before.
'I had this fast reaction and kicked it as hard as I could...and it took off,' Lucas said.
Kathryn checked on their dog and found he was bleeding from multiple bite wounds and scratches. They wrapped bandages around the dog, and say his injuries have begun to improve, but he is still traumatized from the attack.
The couple says the encounter will not stop them from camping in the future but will have tools close by to protect themselves going forward.
'It's not going to deter us from going out...we're just going to have some defense mechanisms there so that if the unfortunate happens again, we will have something to defend against,' Lucas said.

Editor's note: The above video aired on May 25, 2025. THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — One of the men accused of beating and robbing an NYPD officer is facing attempted murder charges, police said. Wayne Lucas, 23, was charged Thursday with attempted murder of a police officer, attempted robbery, attempted aggravated assault of a police officer, and attempted criminal possession of a weapon, according to the NYPD. Lucas, a Staten Island resident, was taken into custody in Virginia last week. His arraignment was pending on Thursday. Lucas's accomplice, Taveon Hargrove, 23, was also arrested in Virginia last week but has still not been extradited to New York City, so he has not been charged yet, police said. Police said the suspects allegedly put a knife up to Officer Nafees Chowdhury's throat and stole his gun, iPhone, and wallet on St. Peter's Avenue at around 4 a.m. on May 24. Chowdhury was critically injured after he was stomped in the head, according to Mayor Eric Adams. The 27-year-old officer had just finished an overnight shift and was heading home. Surveillance footage shows Chowdhury, still in uniform, walking at 4:08 a.m. right before being attacked by two masked suspects. 'They approached him—one in front, one in the back—and they caught him off guard,' Adams said. 'One of them stepped on his face in a violent way.' Chowdhury, who has been a cop for eight months, was released from the hospital last week to a standing ovation from fellow cops and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. 'Come for one of us & you'll have the full force of the NYPD coming for you,' Tisch said in a post on X. The officer's brother-in-law, Gazi Hasan, said the family is devastated. 'The family is shocked about the situation,' he said. Timeline: Events that led up to the murders of three Wenatchee sisters
There's a nationwide search happening for the father of three Wenatchee girls who were found dead. His name is Travis Decker. The Chelan County Sheriff's Office says their mother reported the children missing after Decker didn't drop them off at the agreed-upon time. KIRO 7 has compiled a timeline of events leading up to the grisly discovery of their bodies. Thursday, May 29 Court documents obtained by KIRO 7 News state that Decker's cellphone data shows he traveled to the Rock Island Campground near Leavenworth Thursday evening, the day before his scheduled visitation. Friday, May 30 The sheriff's office says Decker returned to Wenatchee Friday morning. At 5 p.m., Decker picked up the girls, 9-year-old Paityn, 8-year-old Evelyn, and 5-year-old Olivia, for his planned visitation. According to court documents, the girls were expected to return home by 8 p.m. The sheriff's office says the girls' mother, Whitney Decker, tried to call Travis several times, but his cellphone goes to voicemail. At 10 p.m., Whitney went to the Wenatchee Police Department to report the girls missing. According to court documents, law enforcement checked all the hotels and motels within city limits as well as Confluence Park, but could not find Decker or the girls. According to the documents, law enforcement believes Decker drove the girls to the Rock Island Campground, where he'd visited the night prior, and shut off his phone. Saturday, May 31 Wenatchee Police send out an Endangered Missing Person Alert for Decker and the girls. Police said that the investigation did not meet AMBER Alert criteria. Monday, June 1 Court documents obtained by KIRO 7 state that Decker failed to show up to work on Monday, and his boss noted some 'recent mental health concerns.' Around 9 p.m., Chelan County Emergency Management posted that Icicle Road in Leavenworth was closed at milepost 4 due to police activity. Around 10 p.m., law enforcement canceled the Endangered Missing Person Alert but did not explain why. They did not provide information about whether the girls or Decker had been found dead or alive. Law enforcement did not say whether the two incidents were connected at that time. Tuesday, June 2 A warrant was issued for Decker's arrest for custodial interference and granted by a judge. Law enforcement began using a variety of resources, including cellphone records and license plate readers, to try and find Decker. Documents state that just before 5 p.m., law enforcement found his 2017 GMC truck near the Rock Island Campground; it was empty. As they continued their search, the documents state they found zip ties and bags scattered around the area. As they kept looking in the area, the documents state that law enforcement eventually found the bodies of all three girls. The documents state that it's believed they died of asphyxiation. Law enforcement stated there was now probable cause to arrest Decker for kidnapping and murder. At 6 p.m., a vigil was held for the young girls at Memorial Park in Wenatchee. The Chelan County Sheriff's Office held a news conference at about 7 p.m., demanding that Decker turn himself in. What's happening now? There's now a nationwide search for Decker. A tipline was set up for people to call in any possible sightings or information about where he may be. People can call 509-667-6845 or submit information here. Anyone who sees him shouldn't approach him. He's considered dangerous. Instead, call 911 right away. Police say Decker is former military with extensive training. A $20,000 reward is being offered for a tip that leads to Decker's arrest.

Who is Travis Decker? A look at his confirmed military experience
The man wanted for the murder of his three daughters has a military background, KIRO 7 News confirmed Wednesday. Travis Decker is wanted for the murders of 9-year-old Paityn, 8-year-old Evelyn, and 5-year-old Olivia, after he failed to return from a planned custody visit Friday. Their bodies were discovered at a forest campground near Leavenworth Monday. Decker's truck, with his wallet at the scene, was found nearby. According to the National Guard, Decker enlisted in the Army in 2013 as an 11 Bravo infantryman. During his time in the Army, he went to Fort Benning in 2018. He attended the Non-Commissioned Academy. According to the Army website, the academy is 'A premier academy comprised of disciplined, fit, adaptive, agile, and standards-based leaders, committed to producing the best Signal, Cyber, and Public Affairs Noncommissioned Officers capable of integrating, leading, and supporting commanders to gain decision dominance in multi-domain operations; a values-based team that operates on trust, transparency and accountability, focused on quality of life and the personal and professional development of our people.' He earned badges while in the Army, including expert infantry and parachutist. The Expert Infantry Badge (EIB) is a test consisting of a physical assessment, land navigation test, 'expert' weapon qualification, a march of 12-miles with a 35-pound load, and other individual tasks, such as first aid, camouflage, map reading, and communications. The Parachutist Badge is completed by various phases, including jumping out of a plane five times in varying configurations. According to the Army, there is no indication of any special 'wilderness' or 'survivalist' training. In 2021, Decker transferred to Walla Walla National Guard, where he is currently a Sergeant (E5). According to the National Guard, Decker has not been to drill for approximately a year. Paperwork for an 'administration separation' was started, but hasn't been completed.
