NIA records statement of Cuttack family
Cuttack: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday recorded the statements of a Cuttack-based family who survived the Pahalgam attack, officials said. A three-member team of the NIA met the family of Ranjit Bhol (69), who, along with his wife Sashi Kumari Nayak (65), younger son Sandeep (35) and daughter-in-law Lelina Subhadarshini (33), were in Baisaran in Pahalgam on April 22 when the attack took place, they said. The investigators spent two hours at their residence in Deuli Sahi in Tulasipur.
The NIA had on April 26 recorded the statement of Priyadarshini Acharya, wife of Prashant Satpathy, who was among the 26 persons killed in the attack. The Bhol family had told multiple news channels on Sunday that they witnessed the killing of three tourists by terrorists. 'They killed three persons within a distance of 5 feet to 10 feet from me,' said Sashi Kumari, who had gone to Kashmir to celebrate the third wedding anniversary of her son.
She had fractured her left hand and right leg while attempting to run from the gunfire. 'Lord Jagannath and Sai Baba saved me and my family,' she said. Her son, Sandeep, claimed that he had to kneel in front of the terrorists and recite the 'kalma' to save himself.
'However, I was all along thinking about Lord Hanuman. Though I used to wear a locket having a photo of Lord Hanuman, that day I had missed it. Probably, that was the wish of the lord, because of which I could escape such a major tragedy,' he said.
'I have seen terrorists killing people from close quarters,' Sandeep said, recounting that he had asked his mother to remove the 'bindi' from her forehead. His father, Ranjit, said those who died received bullet wounds either on the head or the chest. 'The incident took place only 15 minutes after we reached the spot. We had clicked pictures before hearing the gunshots,' he said. Ranjit said the security personnel rescued his injured wife and took her to the hospital to treat her.
'Though they wanted us to stay in the hospital, we lied to the doctor that the injury did not happen at the site of the attack,' he said, noting that they were in a hurry to leave Kashmir.

'We seek justice for Suhas. A group of over 50 individuals subjected my son to torture before taking his life. Both home minister G Parameshwara and district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao wrongly labelled my son Suhas as a rowdy.I clarify that Suhas was not a rowdy, but worked with Bajrang Dal. Only an NIA investigation can ensure we receive proper justice," she had said. Suhas Shetty Murder Suhas Shetty, a known rowdy sheeter and Hindutva activist, was murdered by an unidentified group on May 1 within the Bajpe police station limits in Mangaluru. He was attacked at around 8:30 pm while he was traveling with five of his associates when their vehicle was intercepted near Kinnipadavu Cross by the attackers. The attackers, around six people, were traveling in a Swift car and a pickup truck. They reportedly attacked Shetty and his group, assaulting him with deadly weapons causing serious injuries. Shetty was the main accused in the high-profile 2022 murder of Mohammed Fazil. Mohammed Fazil was killed by four masked men on July 28, 2022, with Shetty being the prime accused in the case. The then Basvraj Bommai-led BJP government had not granted any compensation to the deceased family. However, the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government had granted a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to Fazil's family in 2023, something that was also offered to three other families that saw members lose lives to communal murders. Years after outrage over delayed FIR in Ankita Bhandari murder, Uttarakhand's revenue police issue back in court
A civil contempt petition has been filed in the Uttarakhand High Court, saying that a 2024 order of the court, giving the state government one year to replace revenue police with regular police in the hilly regions, has not been complied with. The court has asked the state to give instructions on compliance. Filed by Haldwani-based Amit Kholiya and represented by advocate Dushyant Mainali, the petition argues that the state government has not been able to set up regular civil police stations in rural parts of the state, replacing revenue police within the time given to them by the High Court in its judgment of May 21, 2024. An earlier PIL had sought directions to implement a 2018 order of the High Court, which also dealt with the establishment of regular civil police stations in all the rural areas of Uttarakhand and to abolish revenue police within six months of the order. The court order came in the backdrop of a woman's alleged killing by her in-laws for dowry in 2011 in a village in the Tehri Garhwal district, which comes under the revenue police system. In 2024, when the PIL was filed, the state sought another year for the same, which the court granted. Mainali argued that the state has failed to carry out the orders despite the completion of a year, prompting a civil contempt petition against the Home Secretary, DGP, and IGs of Kumaon and Garhwal divisions. The revenue police system is more than a century old in many parts of the state. Under the system, civil officials of the revenue department have the powers and functions of the regular police. Whenever a crime takes place, the revenue police of the area files an FIR, investigates the case, arrests the accused and also files a chargesheet in the local court. The issue gained attention in September 2022 after a delay in the registration of an FIR by the revenue police in the Ankita Bhandari murder case. The night the 19-year-old, working in a resort owned by a former BJP leader's son, was killed, the accused informed the local patwari (as the area falls under revenue police jurisdiction) about her disappearance, but no case was registered. The patwari did not inform anyone about the case and went on leave, and after the matter came to light, the case was transferred to the regular police four days after the incident. He was suspended and later arrested by the Special Investigation Team. The incident raised concerns about the revenue police system in the state, and Assembly Speaker Ritu Khanduri had written to the Chief Minister, seeking the replacement of the revenue police with regular police. In October 2022, less than a month after Bhandari's murder, the state government took a Cabinet decision to abolish the revenue police system and replace it with regular civil police. The current petition also claims that the petitioner on May 26 sent a representation reminding the respondents about their assurance to comply with the court order and served them a copy of the judgment, 'but no heed has been paid to the same and the directions issued by this Hon'ble Court is not being complied with', the petition said.
