'Battle of Seattle' as Inter down nine-man River to advance
SEATTLE: Inter Milan powered into the last 16 of the Club World Cup on Wednesday, scoring a stormy 2-0 victory over River Plate that sealed the Argentinian club's exit.
Teenage striker Francesco Esposito and Alessandro Bastoni scored the goals to settle a physical contest which saw River finish with nine men.
The final whistle was marred by an ugly melee which saw players from both sides clash as they sprinted off the pitch, with missiles being thrown by River's fans at Seattle's Lumen Field
Earlier, the 19-year-old Esposito bagged his first goal for Serie A giants Inter with a lovely strike in the 72nd minute to put the Italians 1-0 up.
The tall teenage striker collected a pass from Petar Sucic, elegantly lost his marker before drilling a shot into the bottom right-hand corner past River goalkeeper Franco Armani.
Bastoni then bagged Inter's second deep into injury time to seal a win which sets up a last 16 meeting against Brazil's Fluminense next Monday.
Mexico's Monterrey, 4-0 winners over already-eliminated Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds, finished as runners-up in Group E and will face Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 on July 2.
River's campaign ended in disarray, with defender Lucas Martinez Quarta sent off for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity in the 66th minute.
Argentina international Gonzalo Montiel then followed his team-mate off the field in injury time after picking up a second yellow card
Inter and River Plate had gone into the game with the Group E standings on a knife edge.
But after Monterrey swept into an early 3-0 lead against Urawa in Pasadena, the stakes soon became clear in Seattle, where the winner would advance provided the result in California held.
After a scrappy first half, Inter began to get on top in the second half against a River side who struggled to create much of note in the final third.
Inter striker Lautaro Martinez squandered a golden chance in the 55th minute, shooting straight at Armani after cutting side.
The game tilted decisively in Inter's favour in the 65th minute when Martinez Quarta was dismissed for bringing down Henrikh Mkhitaryan as the former Manchester United player went down on goal.

Pioli quits as coach of Saudi side Al Nassr
PARIS: Al Nassr have parted company with their Italian coach Stefano Pioli, the Saudi side announced on Wednesday. No official reason was given for the split after only nine months in the post but Pioli's name has been linked with joining Fiorentina for a second spell in charge of the Serie A side. "Al Nassr announces that Mr Pioli and his staff no longer coach the first team," Cristiano Ronaldo's club posted on social media. "We would like to thank Mr Pioli and his staff for their work last season," added Al Nassr, who finished third in the Saudi Pro League. Pioli, who guided AC Milan to the 2022 Serie A crown, only joined Al Nassr in September 2024. Inter Milan, Monterrey join Dortmund in Club World Cup last 16
SEATTLE: Inter Milan kept their cool to beat nine-man River Plate 2-0 and reach the Club World Cup last 16 on Wednesday, while Mexican side Monterrey followed them through from Group E. Borussia Dortmund defeated Ulsan HD 1-0 to claim top spot in Group F and the Germans will face Sergio Ramos' Monterrey, who thrashed Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0. Argentine powerhouses River Plate were eliminated after their defeat by Inter, who will take on more South American opposition on Monday in Charlotte, in the shape of Fluminense. The Brazilian side could only draw 0-0 against South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns but it was enough to claim second place behind Dortmund. Champions League runners-up Inter faced a battle in Seattle against an aggressive River Plate side who had Lucas Martinez and Gonzalo Montiel sent off in front of 45,000 fans at Lumen Field. Francesco Esposito scored his first Inter goal to put the Italians ahead and Alessandro Bastoni made the game safe late on for Christian Chivu's side. "In the first half we were surprised by their intensity, aggression and pressure," said Chivu. "Then in the second half we raised our level of intensity... we're strong, confident and have players who can play such a game." With Monterrey ahead against Urawa, River needed a winner to progress but their job got harder when Martinez was sent off after 66 minutes for hacking down veteran Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Six minutes later teenage striker Esposito steered home the opener to leave River on the brink. Bastoni ensured Inter's progress as he drilled home, before River's Gonzalo Montiel picked up a second yellow and was dismissed. A solitary first-half goal by Daniel Svensson earned Dortmund top spot in Group F in sweltering Cincinnati heat. Dortmund's second straight victory by a one-goal margin, following their 4-3 defeat of Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, was watched by only just over 8,000 spectators in Cincinnati, among them US Vice President JD Vance and FIFA chief Gianni Infantino. "We can be satisfied. I think our performance was better than in the first two matches," said Dortmund coach Niko Kovac. He has spoken regularly at the tournament about the difficulties posed by the searing June heat in the United States. "What the boys are doing is incredible. New coach Chivu hails Inter's adaptability after River win
SEATTLE: Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu has praised the adaptability and commitment of his team after they beat River Plate 2-0 in an intense group match to reach the last 16 of the Club World Cup on Wednesday. Francesco Esposito and Alessandro Bastoni scored the goals in the last quarter of the game to book the 20-times Italian champions a date with Brazilian club Fluminense in Charlotte on Monday. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT: Chivu took charge of the squad for the first time at the Club World Cup, having replaced Simone Inzaghi on a two-year contract in early June. Inzaghi departed by mutual consent after a crushing 5-0 loss to Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League final left Inter without a trophy for the first season since 2019-2020. River put Inter under heavy pressure at the start of Wednesday's game and Chivu was delighted at the character his players showed to come through such a test and get the job done.
