Police deny detaining students after Sabah anti-graft rally
KOTA KINABALU: Police have denied detaining two participants of the Sabah Gempur Rasuah 2.0 peaceful assembly, as alleged by Borneo Komrad activist Mukmin Nantang in a Facebook post today.
Instead, both students were only summoned to give statements regarding a police report they had lodged.
Kota Kinabalu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Kasim Muda said the students were called to the police station to provide statements concerning an incident where a student's car was splashed with acid.
He said after providing their statements, police recorded an additional statement from them as part of the investigation into the organisation of the assembly.
"Police have denied the statement made by one of the assembly participants who claimed that his two friends were arrested and assaulted by police.
"He claimed that his friend was beaten, but that is not true. We told them not to go live, record or take pictures. That's what we prohibited. So, there is no issue of assault," he said today.
Kasim said the term "detention" was used because the students were summoned to give statements regarding the peaceful assembly.
"We recorded their statements because one of them was listed as the chairman of the assembly."
In a Facebook post, Mukmin alleged that Suara Mahasiswa Universiti Malaysia Sabah president Fadhil Kasim and Aliff Danial Badrul Akmal Hisham were detained when they went to the Kota Kinabalu police station.
This followed their lodging of a police report after a student's car was doused with acid during the assembly.
Mukmin also claimed that Fadhil reported being subjected to force, including being beaten and yelled at.

Batu Kawan land deal issue: Chow-Ramasamy mediation set for July 2
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Court Mediation Centre has fixed July 2 for a third round of mediation between Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and former deputy chief minister II Dr P. Ramasamy over the controversial Batu Kawan land deal issue. Today's proceeding was presided over by Selvaranjini Selvaraja. The matter will be heard before Sessions Court judge Helmi Ghani. The e-review to update the mediation status is set for tomorrow. Ramasamy filed a defamation suit against Chow on July 18 last year. Ramasamy's lawyer, Dr Shamsher Thind Singh, said a new mediation date was fixed as both parties needed to confirm something. Today is the second round of mediation. The first was on April 14. After the mediation session, Chow confirmed that the mediation process was ongoing, with the next session scheduled for July 2. "Today's mediation involved defamation suits stemming from the cancelled land deal between Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Umech Land Sdn Bhd. "The first defamation suit was filed by Ramasamy against me, while the second suit was filed by PDC against Ramasamy." Datuk V. Sithambaram is representing Chow and PDC. Met later, Ramasamy said: "The mediation process is ongoing. We will await the decision." Ramasamy filed the defamation suit over a statement on Chow's Facebook page on Oct 3, 2023, which Ramasamy claimed had severely tarnished his reputation. Ramasamy, who was deputy chief minister II from 2008 to 2023, claimed Chow's post contained false accusations regarding his involvement in the approval of a deal between PDC and Umech Land. According to his statement of claims, Ramasamy is seeking damages from Chow to be determined by the court. He is also seeking a mandatory injunction to force Chow to retract his statements and to issue a public apology. He is also asking a prohibitory injunction preventing Chow from repeating the alleged defamatory statements, as well as costs. At the height of the issue, Chow was under fire for the sale of the land after the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce raised questions on the awarding of the project through direct negotiations and why local companies were not given an opportunity in the project.

The Brazilian government and Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency reported that Marins was found dead after a prolonged effort to locate her, hindered by severe weather and difficult terrain. A drone was used to spot her unmoving body. Marins was hiking in a group but reportedly fell behind when the incident occurred. Her disappearance was first reported on June 21. Lombok is a tourist destination known for its idyllic beaches and lush greenery, and many try to climb Rinjani, Indonesia's second-tallest volcano, for its panoramic views. In 2018 hundreds of hikers and guides became stranded by landslides on the mountain after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the island.
