Police deny detaining students after Sabah anti-graft rally

KOTA KINABALU: Police have denied detaining two participants of the Sabah Gempur Rasuah 2.0 peaceful assembly, as alleged by Borneo Komrad activist Mukmin Nantang in a Facebook post today.
Instead, both students were only summoned to give statements regarding a police report they had lodged.
Kota Kinabalu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Kasim Muda said the students were called to the police station to provide statements concerning an incident where a student's car was splashed with acid.
He said after providing their statements, police recorded an additional statement from them as part of the investigation into the organisation of the assembly.
"Police have denied the statement made by one of the assembly participants who claimed that his two friends were arrested and assaulted by police.
"He claimed that his friend was beaten, but that is not true. We told them not to go live, record or take pictures. That's what we prohibited. So, there is no issue of assault," he said today.
Kasim said the term "detention" was used because the students were summoned to give statements regarding the peaceful assembly.
"We recorded their statements because one of them was listed as the chairman of the assembly."
In a Facebook post, Mukmin alleged that Suara Mahasiswa Universiti Malaysia Sabah president Fadhil Kasim and Aliff Danial Badrul Akmal Hisham were detained when they went to the Kota Kinabalu police station.
This followed their lodging of a police report after a student's car was doused with acid during the assembly.
Mukmin also claimed that Fadhil reported being subjected to force, including being beaten and yelled at.

'I'm not a criminal': M'sian woman alleges BigPay wrongly flagged her as money mule over RM10

A viral Facebook post by Michelle Law has sparked public outrage and prompted the government to investigate after she revealed how a minor RM10.44 refund error by BigPay led to her being wrongly labelled a money mule — an accusation that has since severely impacted her life and health. 'I'm not a criminal. I didn't lie, and I'm not involved in money laundering. I'm just an ordinary person who lives honestly and works hard every day,' she wrote in her post, detailing the nightmare that began after she used BigPay services in Thailand and had her account suddenly locked over 'suspected misuse.' ALSO READ: Family misses flight after LHDN false alarm at KLIA—netizens outraged, call it 'unacceptable' Despite submitting all necessary documents and cooperating fully with investigations, Michelle claimed she received no updates. Months later, her savings account was closed, and she was barred from applying for credit cards, loans, or purchasing property — due to being flagged as a money mule. Eventually, BigPay acknowledged that a refund of RM10.44 had wrongly triggered their system to flag her account. While they claimed the label was removed, Michelle said she received no official clearance letter or apology. 'The bank's response? 'This is our policy.'... I have no influence, I'm not a celebrity, not from a wealthy family,' she wrote. 'All I'm asking for is one thing: An official letter clearing my name, and the right to live with dignity and fairness.' The emotional toll has been severe. Michelle says she now suffers from a thyroid condition caused by prolonged stress and anxiety. Her story has since been widely shared online, with many Malaysians calling for accountability from BigPay and regulatory authorities. In response, Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying has pledged action. In a Facebook statement, she wrote: 'I view the situation involving Michelle Law and BigPay with utmost seriousness. 'Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and I are looking into the matter and are committed to ensuring it is resolved promptly and transparently. 'BNM has already initiated engagement with BigPay and is currently awaiting a comprehensive report from the company. 'Actions will be taken if it is found that they have not been in compliance with existing regulations,' she stated.

Batu Kawan land deal issue: Chow-Ramasamy mediation set for July 2

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Court Mediation Centre has fixed July 2 for a third round of mediation between Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and former deputy chief minister II Dr P. Ramasamy over the controversial Batu Kawan land deal issue. Today's proceeding was presided over by Selvaranjini Selvaraja. The matter will be heard before Sessions Court judge Helmi Ghani. The e-review to update the mediation status is set for tomorrow. Ramasamy filed a defamation suit against Chow on July 18 last year. Ramasamy's lawyer, Dr Shamsher Thind Singh, said a new mediation date was fixed as both parties needed to confirm something. Today is the second round of mediation. The first was on April 14. After the mediation session, Chow confirmed that the mediation process was ongoing, with the next session scheduled for July 2. "Today's mediation involved defamation suits stemming from the cancelled land deal between Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Umech Land Sdn Bhd. "The first defamation suit was filed by Ramasamy against me, while the second suit was filed by PDC against Ramasamy." Datuk V. Sithambaram is representing Chow and PDC. Met later, Ramasamy said: "The mediation process is ongoing. We will await the decision." Ramasamy filed the defamation suit over a statement on Chow's Facebook page on Oct 3, 2023, which Ramasamy claimed had severely tarnished his reputation. The post was reproduced by the media and social media users. Ramasamy, who was deputy chief minister II from 2008 to 2023, claimed Chow's post contained false accusations regarding his involvement in the approval of a deal between PDC and Umech Land. According to his statement of claims, Ramasamy is seeking damages from Chow to be determined by the court. He is also seeking a mandatory injunction to force Chow to retract his statements and to issue a public apology. He is also asking a prohibitory injunction preventing Chow from repeating the alleged defamatory statements, as well as costs. At the height of the issue, Chow was under fire for the sale of the land after the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce raised questions on the awarding of the project through direct negotiations and why local companies were not given an opportunity in the project.

"At the end of four days of work, hindered by adverse weather, terrain, and visibility conditions in the region, teams from the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency found the body of the Brazilian tourist." Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he received the news of Marins' death with great sadness. "Our diplomatic and consular services in Indonesia will continue to provide full support to her family at this time of great pain," Lula said in a post on X. AFP reported that the head of Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency Mohammad Syafii said rescuers would evacuate her body on Wednesday morning because of bad weather. "One of the rescuers managed to reach the victim at the depth of 600 metres. Upon checking, there were no signs of life," he told reporters. "Three rescuers got closer to the victim and confirmed she has died." An Instagram account providing updates from the Marins family throughout the search effort also said Marins was found unresponsive on Tuesday. "Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was. With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive," the account, which amassed more than 1.5 million followers since Marins went missing, wrote in a post on Tuesday evening. "We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received." Marins' last posts on Instagram show her backpacking around Thailand and Vietnam before reaching Indonesia. Lombok is a tourist destination known for its idyllic beaches and lush greenery, and many try to climb Rinjani, Indonesia's second-tallest volcano, for its panoramic views. In 2018 hundreds of hikers and guides became stranded by landslides on the mountain after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the island. At least 17 were killed across the island, including one on the mountain. More Like This
