Rita Braver to Retire From CBS News After More Than 50 Years
Rita Braver is departing CBS News after a 53-year tenure. The CBS News Sunday Morning staple will depart the network at the end of the month.
'Those who know Rita and Sunday Morning realize how essential she's been to our work,' CBS News Sunday Morning executive producer Rand Morrison wrote in a note to staffers. 'Not simply because of her excellent reporting, her keen sense of curiosity about all kinds of things, and her willingness to take on almost any assignment… but also because Rita has always brought professionalism, clarity, and a passion for quality to every story that's come her way.'
In a 2022 tribute marking her golden anniversary with CBS News, Braver talked about her '50-year love affair' with her longtime home. 'It's had its highs and lows, some exasperating moments, and some too magical to every forget,' she said.
Braver's began her journalism career at CBS' New Orleans affiliate WWL-TV. She joined CBS News in 1972 as a news desk staffer in its Washington, D.C. bureau, the first of many jobs she had at the Eye Network.
In 1983, she became its chief law correspondent-a role she held for a decade. Later on, she served as chief White House correspondent from 1993 to 1997, and was a frequent guest and guest host of Face the Nation on Sunday mornings. She has been CBS News Sunday Morning's chief national correspondent since 1998.
In recent years, Braver has reported on such national issues such as political correctness on college campuses and the resurgence of antisemitism in the United States. She has also led viewers through exhibits of such famed artists Vermeer, Chagall, José Parlá, and Kehinde Wiley.
'My reward for years of jumping out of bed whenever a story broke was the chance to work for Sunday Morning,' Braver said in her 2022 tribute video. 'The bonus is that I get to work with some of the smartest, nicest people you can possibly imagine.'

Major TV Networks Set to Snub Trump's Military Parade for Sports
Donald Trump's June 14 Washington military parade may be relegated to news coverage on the streaming arms of the major TV networks. The parade marks the founding of the U.S. Army during the American Revolutionary War 250 years ago. Trump has promised an 'amazing day' with ' sorts of things' taking over the streets of Washington. The parade, with an estimated cost of up to $45 million according to military officials, also coincides with Trump's 79th birthday. Despite the hard sell from the President, TV networks are scrambling to figure out how much of the event they will cover on traditional live TV and how much will go straight to their streaming arms. Sources close to ABC News, NBC News and CBS News told Variety the networks would be unlikely to change their traditional sports-based Saturday night programming to cover the parade. ABC News will 'cover the parade across programs and platforms' including their 24/7 streaming news channel. The network has the UFL championship game airing in primetime on Saturday night. NBC's streaming arm, NBC News Now, will feature special coverage of the event, with NBC airing the U.S Open Golf when the parade is happening. CBS News are also promoting the event on their streaming network, while their main channel airs local news and a repeat screening of the police-based comedy drama Elsbeth. For those looking for more extensive coverage, Fox News Channel will dedicate four hours to the parade on Saturday as part of the 'Army 250 Parade'. Fox's main channel will air the Major League Baseball on Saturday night. NewsNation are also promising dedicated coverage, including performances from the Army drill team and first vision of the military vehicles being flown in for the parade. Army officials have estimated a potential 200,000 people will attend the evening parade. On Tuesday, Trump threatened anyone planning to protest at the military parade in Washington 'that hate our be met with heavy force.'

Bob Costas rips mainstream media for doing ‘MAGA Media': ‘There really isn't two sides'
Famed sportscaster Bob Costas slammed the mainstream media for cowing to President Trump during his second term while accepting a leadership award. Costas, attending the Mirror Awards in New York City on Monday night, singled out ABC News and CBS News for rolling over after Trump sued both networks. In a long-winded speech that covered his career in broadcasting and the state of the media business, Costas criticized ABC parent Disney for paying $15 million to settle a defamation lawsuit against the network over star anchor George Stephanopoulos saying Trump was found guilty of raping E. Jean Carroll. A New York court had found Trump guilty of sexual assault — not rape, a key legal difference — in the civil case. Trump has denied wrongdoing in that case. 'All they should've said was, 'George misspoke. The president, that paragon of virtue, was only found guilty of sexual assault, not rape. So we stand corrected,'' Costas said of the decision to settle. 'They didn't have to pay a $15 million ransom.' The Post had previously reported that Stephanopoulos had been told repeatedly by producers to not use the word 'rape' but he ignored the warnings. Costas then turned to CBS parent Paramount Global, which is controlled by Shari Redstone, over its attempts to settle another Trump suit over the alleged biased editing of a '60 Minutes' sit-down with then-vice president Kamala Harris. Paramount is currently looking to close an $8 billion merger with Skydance Media in a move that would require the greenlight from Trump's Federal Communications Commission. The network has denied it deceptively edited the '60 Minutes' interview to make Harris sound more cogent. Under pressure from Trump's lawsuit and higher-ups at Paramount, longtime '60 Minutes' boss Bill Owens exited the company, citing waning editorial dependence. 'And did Shari Redstone, because she wants to affect a merger that Trump's FCC can stand in the way of, did she have to besmirch and undercut the gold standard in our lifetime of broadcast journalism, '60 Minutes?'' Costas said. 'Paying $20 million in ransom to Trump is just the cost of doing business when there's billions of dollars at stake. These are ongoing assaults on the basic idea of a free press.' Costas also took a jab at CNN, which he claimed has 'valorized' Trump 'in the name of being balanced,' dubbing such work as 'MAGA media.' CNN brass has pushed for anchors to try to remain objective when covering the Trump administration. 'But if the answer to that is MAGA media, if the answer to that is Donald Trump's view of the world, which is only through a prism of what benefits him, there are no higher ideals. There are no principles at work other than what benefits him,' he said. 'I'll stay with where we are without correction if the correction is what Donald Trump represents.' 'If someone says – and the idea that you have to find somebody who will not just defend Donald Trump, but valorize it, even on CNN or wherever else, just in the name of being balanced– look, if someone is contending that the Earth is flat, in order to appear objective, you are not required to say, 'Well, maybe it might be oblong.' No, it's not,' Costas said. 'Certainly things are just true.' He concluded: 'And regrettably, something that's true in America right now is that the President of the United States has absolutely no regard, and in fact has contempt, for basic American principles and basic common decency.' Mediaite first reported on Costas' comments.
