Eight killed in latest shooting near Israeli and US-supported aid site in Gaza
KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — At least eight Palestinians were killed and dozens more wounded on Sunday in a shooting near Israeli- and U.S.-supported food distribution points in the Gaza Strip, according to health officials. Witnesses blamed the Israeli military, which did not immediately comment. The war in Gaza is still raging, more than 20 months after Hamas' Oct. 7 attack ignited it. That attack also set off a chain of events that led to Israel's surprise attack on Iran on Friday. The witnesses said Israeli forces opened fire around dawn toward crowds of desperate Palestinians heading to two aid sites in Rafah. Experts and aid workers say Israel's blockade and military campaign have caused widespread hunger and raised the risk of famine. The shooting happened hundreds of meters (yards) away from the sites, which are operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a group that Israel and the United States hope will replace the U.N.-run system of aid distribution. The United Nations has rejected the new system, saying it violates humanitarian principles. There have been near-daily shootings near the sites since they opened last month. Witnesses say Israeli forces have repeatedly fired on the crowds and health officials say scores have been killed. The military has acknowledged firing warning shots at what it says were suspects approaching its forces. 'There were wounded, dead, and martyrs,' Ahmed al-Masri told The Associated Press on Sunday as he returned from one of the sites empty-handed. 'It's a trap.' Umm Hosni al-Najjar said she joined the crowd heading to the aid point in Rafah's Tal al-Sultan neighborhood around 4:30 a.m. She said the shooting began as people were advancing to the site a few minutes after her arrival. 'There were many wounded and martyrs,' she said. 'No one was able to evacuate them.' The Nasser Hospital in the nearby city of Khan Younis said it received eight bodies after the shooting. The aid system rolled out last month has been marred by chaos and violence, while the U.N. system has struggled to deliver food because of Israeli restrictions and a breakdown of law and order, despite Israel loosening a total blockade it imposed from early March to mid-May. Israel and the U.S. say Hamas has siphoned aid off of the U.N.-run system, while U.N. officials say there is no evidence of systematic diversion. The U.N. says the new system does not meet Gaza's needs, allows Israel to control who gets aid and risks further mass displacement as people move closer to the sites. Two are in the southernmost city of Rafah — now mostly inhabited — and all three are in Israeli military zones that are off limits to independent media. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation says there has been no violence in or around the distribution points. It has warned people to stay on the designated routes and recently paused delivery to discuss safety measures with the military. Hamas started the war with its attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, when Palestinian militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took another 251 hostage. The militants still hold 53 hostages, fewer than half of them alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals. Israel's military campaign has killed over 55,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. It says women and children make up most of the dead, but doesn't distinguish between civilians and combatants. Israel says it has killed more than 20,000 militants, without providing evidence. The war has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and displaced around 90% of its population, often multiple times. The study on vitamin D, conducted among a population of older Americans by researchers at Mass General Brigham, the University of Massachusetts and the Medical College of Georgia, found that those who took a daily vitamin D supplement of 2,000 IU, or international units, a day — meaning 50 micrograms a day — experienced a significant benefit in a key area of cellular aging known as 'telomere shortening.' Telomeres are the crucial protective caps at the ends of our DNA strands (they are sometimes compared to the plastic caps at the ends of shoelaces), and they are critical to cellular health. They typically shorten as we age and as cells divide. 'We found that vitamin D3 supplementation significantly reduced telomere attrition over a four-[year] period … suggesting that vitamin D3 daily supplementation with or without n-3 FAs might have a role in counteracting telomere erosion or cell senescence,' researchers wrote. (This particular study found no health benefit from another prominent ingredient in oily fish, namely Omega-3 oils — but many others have done so.) Meanwhile, research unveiled at the annual jamboree of the American Society for Nutrition, held in the scientific hot spot of Orlando, Fla., finds that drinking up to 2½ cups of regular caffeinated coffee per day may help you live longer and healthier. Decaffeinated coffee and colas showed no benefits, they added. The researchers did not examine whether a healthy, life-extending coffee also includes, say, one of those extra-large 500-calorie desserts, complete with caramel syrup, sprinkles and whipped cream, which some people pick up every morning (at the drive-thru, so they don't have to walk to the counter). Hmm … what do you think? Some headlines have emphasized that the study found a health benefit only in women, but this is a bit misleading. The researchers didn't reveal a health benefit in men not because they couldn't find one, but because they didn't look. The study only involved following women — nearly 50,000 of them — over several decades. (One caveat is that some of the researchers involved in both studies teach at Harvard — so for about half of the U.S. population, this is probably just 'fake news.') The latest research adds to a growing accumulation of knowledge about what we should do if we want to raise our chances of living longer and healthier lives. Each individual study is open to challenges and queries, because they are always conducted in the real, outside world, where countless unmeasured factors will interfere with the results. You cannot genetically engineer 10,000 identical humans, keep them in a laboratory for 80 years and subject them to laboratory-condition tests over that time. But overall, the real-world results have tended to point in some clear directions. The big picture of how to lead a healthy lifestyle is best summarized by research into so-called blue zones, meaning areas of the world — from Okinawa, Japan to Sardinia, Italy — where scientists have found that people tend to live the longest and the healthiest lives. According to the Blue Zones Institute, based on what scientists and researchers have observed about people living in these areas, there are five key areas to focus on: eating a healthy diet; staying physically active; socializing with friends and family a lot; having some sense of purpose or higher belief; and doing things that lower stress. On the issue of food, the 'Mediterranean diet' tends to get the most scientific support: lots of fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes and whole grains; only small amounts of meat; and very little processed food or refined carbohydrates. I don't know if fish for breakfast is Mediterranean, or just old school. In Victorian England, breakfast staples in wealthier households included kippers and kedgeree. Kippers, also known back then as 'red herrings,' are smoked herrings. (You can buy them in cans in U.S. supermarkets, often from Canada. The contents can be heated in a microwave in seconds.) Kedgeree, almost unknown on our side of the Atlantic, is a cold dish involving fish, egg, curry powder and rice. Both may be acquired tastes. Personally, as I grew up with them, I find them both exquisite — and vastly superior to any sugared cereal. If these things make a comeback, as 'health foods' no less, it can only be good news. Israeli fire kills 12 people in Gaza, medics say
CAIRO (Reuters) -Israeli fire and airstrikes killed at least 12 Palestinians on Sunday across the enclave, local health authorities said, at least five of them near two aid sites operated by the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Medics at Al-Awda Hospital in the central Gaza Strip said at least three people were killed and dozens wounded by Israeli fire as they tried to approach a GHF site near the Netzarim corridor. Two others were killed en route to another aid site in Rafah in the south. An airstrike killed seven other people in Beit Lahiya town north of the enclave, medics said. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military. The GHF began distributing food packages in Gaza at the end of May after Israel partially lifted a near three-month total blockade. Scores of Palestinians have been killed in near-daily mass shootings trying to reach the food. The United Nations rejects the Israeli-backed new distribution system as inadequate, dangerous, and a violation of humanitarian impartiality principles.
