"Champions" Queen win 2025 Polar Music Prize, Hancock and Hannigan also honoured
STOCKHOLM, March 18 (Reuters) - British rock band Queen, American jazz pianist Herbie Hancock and Canadian soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan were awarded the 2025 Polar Music Prize on Tuesday.
The Polar Prize hailed Queen for their "distinctive and instantly recognizable sound that no one else can emulate".
"Queen were not exaggerating when they sang 'We are the Champions'," it said in a statement.
Queen have sold more than 300 million albums featuring songs such as "We Will Rock You", "Another One Bites The Dust" and "Bohemian Rhapsody".
Founded in 1970, the band featured flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor and bass player John Deacon. They played stadiums across the world - including a memorable performance at the Live Aid concert in 1985 - before Mercury's death in 1991.
They relaunched in 2004 with a succession of new singers.
Queen share the prize with American jazz pianist Herbie Hanckock, a collaborator of Miles Davies among others as well as a solo star in his own right, and Canadian soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan.
Founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, publisher and manager of the Swedish band ABBA, previous winners include Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Sting, Elton John and Metallica.

Love Island have announced two new singletons for this series. The new season kicked off on Monday, but this year's singles haven't had the chance to get comfortable in their couples, as ITV producers quickly started sending in bombshells left, right, and centre. The girls were the first to come under fire as American pool party waitress Antonia Laites entered the villa and immediately stole Shakira's man. This left her vulnerable to being dumped from the island, so she soon had to start chatting up the other girls' partners in a last-ditch attempt to save herself before the next firepit ceremony. However, now it is the men on the show who have had the pressure put on them as two new bombshells have entered the villa and are ready to crack on with their girls, following the devastating dumping of Sophie Lee. Here is what we know about the new lads... Shea, 25, from Bristol, said he is looking for someone bubbly, who's got "that spark". Unlike some of the other boys in the villa, this one is not looking to mess around. Shea wants to find a good girl with a "nice personality" to get serious with. Host Maya Jama then advised Shakira she would have just 24 hours to get to know each of the boys and choose which one she'd like to couple up with in order to stay in the villa. However, the catch was that the boy had to accept her proposal and ditch his current girl for Shakira. Blu, Conor and Harry all showed an interest in Shakira but she ultimately decided to choose Harry, sending motivational speaker Sophie from Manchester packing.
