Zlatan Ibrahimovic lashed out at Inter Miami after their humiliation at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain at the FIFA Club World Cup, saying the Major League Soccer (MLS) side let Lionel Messi down.
Joao Neves scored twice as PSG swept aside Messi and Inter Miami 4-0 at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, securing their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals with ruthless efficiency.
'Messi's defeat? No, don't talk about the defeat as if it was his fault! Messi didn't lose, Inter Miami did! Have you seen this team?" Ibrahimovic was quoted as saying by Footmercato.
'Messi plays among statues, not teammates! If he was in a real team, in Paris, in Manchester [City], in any big team, you would have seen the real lion.
'Messi only plays because he loves the game, because he can still do what 99% of players can't! But he's surrounded by those who run as if they were carrying bags of cement! There are no coaches, no stars, not even players who understand how to move without the ball!
'You want to blame Messi? If he plays with [Cristiano] Ronaldo, with [Kylian] Mbappe, with [Erling] Haaland, with Zlatan. Then you can talk! But today? No, no, no.
'That's not the Messi I know, he's a big ghost who plays in a circus! But be careful, if you give him a real team, he'll burn the stadium down again! Because quite simply. Messi is still Messi, but today? It's not his defeat, it's the defeat of Inter Miami and football."
How PSG Beat Inter Miami?
Any hopes of a Miami comeback were extinguished in the first half as Messi and his team barely got a look in, and their misery deepened further when Tomas Aviles turned Desire Doue's cross into his own net.
Achraf Hakimi added the fourth goal, pouncing after his initial shot struck the crossbar, just before halftime.
Messi became more involved after the break. His header was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma following a quick counter-attack, and he struck the wall with a late free kick that brought the crowd to their feet in anticipation of a consolation goal that never materialised.
The Champions League winners march on to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winners of the clash between Flamengo and Bayern Munich.

How Fluminense's coach Renato Gaucho stunned Inter Milan with tactical 3-5-2 formation at Club World Cup

Fluminense manager Renato Gaucho stunned Inter Milan, by subverting their own strategy to defeat them and book a place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals. The Brazilian coach raved about his players and in particular, how they adapted to a rare three-center-back formation. 'We weren't used to playing that way, but over the last three days, I got it into my players' heads that it was possible. We respected the opponent, of course, but we showed everyone that we believed. We faced a top team with far more money than us, but once on the pitch, it's one versus one,' Renato said, as reported by Brazilian newspaper O Globo. The 3-5-2 combination has a nice ironic twist to it as it's a staple of Inter Milan over the years. Antonio Conte famously employed it to win the 2020/21 Serie A title and his successor Simone Inzaghi also used it a lot to take Inter to champions league final in 2023. By deploying three central defenders and a back five, Renato effectively shut down Inter's wing attacks. Ignacio and Freytes played vital roles in protecting Thiago Silva, who led the defensive line. The structure was further bolstered by Bernal's positioning as defensive midfielder. And the zone worked more effectively by Nonato at an advanced midfielder position, where he repeatedly pressed Inter's build-ups. Arias and Cano widened the attack at the wings, while Nonato pushed through the center creating constant pressure. And Inter Milan buckled. The 3-5-2 tactical block has three centre backs, two wingbacks and three central midfielders and two forwards. The centre back provide a numerical advantage when defending and that extra protection allows the wingbacks to attack more without fretting about any defensive responsibility. It's not without risks though as explained by Athletic's Tifo: 'Its weakness is space. Without the protection of the fullback, the wide centre backs can be exposed and without unusually athletic and skilful defenders, it becomes unstable.' The coach Renato highlighted the group's mentality: 'My team gave everything. They stayed focused, dedicated. This group deserves all the credit. And our fans too—what a celebration. People all over Brazil should enjoy this. We're among the final eight, and many didn't believe we could make it.' Renato also talked about the disparity between clubs from different continents: 'Brazilian football is showing its strength. European clubs have more money and can sign the best players, but on the field, what counts is attitude and commitment. That's what my team showed today.'

Saudi's Al Hilal knock Man City out of Club World Cup in huge shock

ORLANDO: Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal sent English giants Manchester City crashing out of the Club World Cup on Monday, snatching a shock 4-3 victory in extra time in the biggest upset of the tournament so far. The match finished 2-2 at full-time but at the end of an eventful extra-time Marcos Leonardo grabbed the winner and pulled off one of the greatest wins in Middle Eastern football history. The Saudi club advance to the quarter-finals where they will face Brazilian club Fluminense, ensuring a non-European team will reach the last four. City had taken the lead in the ninth minute in controversial fashion, Bernardo Silva finishing after Rayan Ait-Nouri's cross. Al Hilal players protested Ait-Nouri had controlled with his arm in the build-up but the goal stood. City had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead before the break but a combination of poor finishing and inspired goalkeeping from Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou kept the lead at a single goal. Al Hilal offered several reminders of their threat on the break but City even more chances with Jeremy Doku volleying straight at Bounou who moments later reacted superbly again to keep out a Bernardo effort.

Roberto Baggio on 1994 penalty miss: ‘If I had a knife then, I would have stabbed myself'

Three decades after the most famous (or infamous) penalty in World Cup history, the moment still haunts Roberto Baggio, who missed the spot kick that would have kept Italy in the shootout against Brazil in the 1994 World Cup. Even if he had scored, Italy would have still ended up on the losing side, as they already were a goal in deficit and had Brazil converted the next attempt, they would have won. 'If I had a knife then, I would have stabbed myself. If there had been a gun, I would have shot myself. At that moment, I just wanted to die,' Baggio told The Athletic. The moment is still replete with tragic-heroic symbolism. Baggio, standing shocked, head hung, hands over hips, the mind perhaps an absolute blank. Later, tears rolled down his cheeks. It was the tournament he had defined, and would continue to define, but not in the way he wanted it to be. 'It was the toughest moment of my career. Before I left for the finals my Buddhist spiritual master told me that I would be confronted with a lot of problems and that everything would be decided at the very last minute. At the time I didn't realise his prediction would be so accurate,' he had earlier said. Had Italy won the World Cup, he would have been placed among the legends of the game like Diego Maradona and Pele. But he has little regrets about that. 'I don't see it that way. It's hard for me to put myself alongside them. I never felt that way. I've always been just a regular person among billions on this planet. I was simply lucky to play football and do what I love. I only wanted to entertain people and bring them joy,' Baggio said. 'That's what I lived for. That was my dream. For the people to enjoy themselves. That was the mentality I had when I was 10, 15, when I was 20 until I retired,' he said. He says simple things keep him happy. 'Maybe it's best to be unaware of it. Maybe an awareness of it would change you. I don't want to change. I am the same person I was when I was 10. I'm passionate about the simple things in life.' In the United States of America for the Club World Cup, he met Lionel Messi on his 38th birthday and gifted him a jersey of the 1994 World Cup. 'When he saw it, he got emotional. He caressed it, and folded it. It was a beautiful thing to see.' 'What a wonderful visit! Thank you, Roberto, for this special and meaningful gift and for the lovely chat we shared. You are a crack and a football legend. It will always be a pleasure to welcome you whenever you want to come and see us,' Messi posted on Instagram.
