Argentina not overly reliant on Messi, says Scaloni
Argentina have learned to cope with Lionel Messi's absences and no longer need to rejig the line-up when the Inter Miami forward is not available, manager Lionel Scaloni said ahead of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Colombia.
Since making his senior debut in 2005, Messi has scored 112 goals in 192 appearances for Argentina, winning the World Cup in 2022, two Copa America titles and a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The 37-year-old captain missed Argentina's 1-0 win over Uruguay and 4-1 thrashing of rivals Brazil in March due to injury, with Scaloni's side securing their place at the 2026 World Cup during that international break.
He returned to the squad for this month's World Cup qualifiers and made a substitute appearance in Argentina's 1-0 win over Chile last week.
"The team is now in a moment where it can play in the same way with Leo (Messi) or without Leo, which used to be more complex in the past as we had to change some players," Scaloni told reporters ahead of the match in Buenos Aires.
"But now we don't have this necessity and the team works in the same way, that's good."
While Argentina have already qualified for the World Cup in North America, Colombia are in the sixth and final automatic qualification spot and will be looking to put some distance between themselves and seventh-placed Venezuela with a win.
Colombia beat Argentina 2-1 when the sides last met in the World Cup qualifiers in September.
"It's a great team, and with great players, and it has a clear style that can put you in trouble," Scaloni said.
"We've analysed it, we've shown the players their strengths and what we want to take advantage of. It's going to be a nice game, especially because we play at home, so it's good for our people to see the players." REUTERS

"I think that LIV is not going anywhere," said DeChambeau, who headlines the list of 14 LIV Golf players in the U.S. Open field this week. "(Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan) has been steadfast in his belief on team golf, and whether everybody believes in it or not, I think it's a viable option. I think it's a viable commercial option." DeChambeau said he feels there is a "sustainable model" for team golf. "Our team has been EBITDA positive for the past two years, so we're starting to grow and move in the right direction, just like TGL," said DeChambeau. "TGL has done a great job. They've got some teams that are making some money, and I believe there is a sustainable model out there." TGL is a tech-infused indoor golf league created by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy that held its first season earlier this year and featured players hitting shots at a simulator screen before moving to a green that can rotate 360 degrees, creating hole-to-hole variations. "How it all works with the game of golf, who knows, but I know my worth. I know what LIV brings to the table," DeChambeau added. "And I'm excited for the future of what golf is going to be." Engel, ranked 281 in the world, arrived at the tournament having played only five matches on the ATP Tour, with the 17-year-old a regular on the Challenger Tour where he has played on clay and hardcourts. After slowly coming to grips with the green surface, Engel forced a decider but found himself a break down and even needed treatment for dizziness before triumphing 4-6 6-4 7-6(5) in nearly 2-1/2 hours. Botafogo sign Argentine Correa ahead of Club World Cup
Botafogo have signed Argentine forward Joaquin Correa on a deal until the end of 2027 after his contract with Inter Milan expired, the Brazilian Serie A team announced on Tuesday ahead of the Club World Cup. "The player arrives on a free after finalising his contract with the Nerazzurri," Botafogo said in a statement. "Correa, who will wear the number 30 shirt, will join the Botafogo delegation in the United States for the FIFA Club World Cup." The Brazilian club are in Group B at the tournament, which kicks off this weekend, and will face Atletico Madrid, Paris St Germain and Seattle Sounders in the group phase. The 30-year-old striker, who made his debut in 2012 with Estudiantes de La Plata, previously played for Sampdoria, Sevilla, Lazio, Olympique de Marseille and Inter, where he played last season. Correa won the 2021 Copa America with Argentina.
