BRANCHBURG, N.J., May 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens has delivered a positive scientific opinion on Lumenato™, a standardized yellow tomato extract developed exclusively by Lycored, the global leader in natural carotenoids for food, beverage and dietary supplement products. The scientific opinion, published in the EFSA Journal, affirms the safety of Lumenato as a novel food and opens new global possibilities for brands to incorporate this unique, ingestible skincare ingredient into a variety of skin health solutions.

The move, if backed by member states, would be the first action taken by the EU based on its International Procurement Instrument, a 2022 law that's meant to promote reciprocity in access to public procurement markets. Implementation of the restrictions could open a new front with China, just as the EU seeks to strike a balance in its relationship with Beijing while navigating US President Donald Trump's tariff war. A spokesperson for the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, didn't immediately reply to a request for comment. The EU launched an investigation into China's procurement of medical devices last April, with the probe finding in January that Beijing discriminated against foreign firms. Consultations failed to find alternative solutions, Bloomberg previously reported. Beijing's focus on local and state-oriented procurement in medical technologies has increased in recent years, as authorities across the country included strict domestic product requirements for many categories of device. The shift turned a €1.3 billion ($1.5 billion) trade deficit in these goods for China in 2019 into a €5.2 billion surplus just one year later, according to data cited in an EU report published last April. The focus of the investigation wasn't to reverse that trend but to enable fair competition. The EU has long argued that Beijing has been pushing market-distorting measures and practices to implement its 'Made in China' policy and its target of achieving 85% domestic market share for Chinese companies producing 'core medical device components' by 2025. The target is 70% for higher-end devices. In PSMAddition, the SoC is a combination of androgen receptor pathway inhibitor (ARPI) therapy and androgen deprivation therapy (ADT)3. Almost all mHSPC patients ultimately progress to metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC)4. There is a need for additional treatment options with novel mechanisms of action that further delay progression, prolong OS and improve disease control compared to the current SoC, while showing a favorable safety and tolerability profile. 'The progression from metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer to castration-resistant disease remains a formidable challenge that can profoundly impact the survival of patients,' said Shreeram Aradhye, M.D., President, Development and Chief Medical Officer at Novartis. About PSMAddition study PSMAddition (NCT04720157) is a Phase III, open-label, prospective, 1:1 randomized study comparing the efficacy and safety of Pluvicto in combination with SoC (ARPI + ADT) vs. SoC alone in adult patients with PSMA-positive mHSPC3. Patients randomized to the SoC alone arm are allowed to crossover to receive Pluvicto, upon confirmation of radiographic progression by blinded independent review committee (BIRC) and per the discretion of the treating physician3. The primary endpoint is rPFS, defined as the time to radiographic progression by PCWG3-modified RECIST V1.1 (as assessed by BIRC) or death3. The key secondary endpoint of OS is defined as time to death due to any cause3. About Pluvicto™ (INN: lutetium (177Lu) vipivotide tetraxetan) Pluvicto is an intravenous RLT that combines a targeting compound (a ligand) with a therapeutic radionuclide (a radioactive particle, in this case lutetium-177)5,7.
