An additional EL AL Dreamliner lands in Israel

EL AL welcomes its 17th Dreamliner, symbolizing unity and hope, with new livery and expanded capacity under its strategic renewal plan.
The 17th aircraft in EL AL's Dreamliner fleet is landing in Israel with a new livery and a name that symbolizes unity and hope. This milestone is part of the airline's strategic renewal program and its vision to represent Israel with pride in the skies around the world. The 17th Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will land in Israel on May 16 and will join wide-body fleet of EL AL, primarily serving transatlantic routes. The aircraft bears the name 'Achinu Kol Beit Yisrael' – Our Brothers, the Entire House of Israel, and features EL AL's updated livery already seen on parts of its 737 fleet. The new design highlights EL AL's signature colors and the Israeli flag. With 293 seats, the new aircraft will help EL AL increase capacity and meet growing passenger demand.
Unlike EL AL's other 45 passenger aircraft, which are all named after Israeli cities and towns, the company chose a different path for this aircraft, naming it 'Achinu Kol Beit Yisrael'- a quote from Jewish liturgy expressing a prayer for the return of all hostages to Israel. The full quote reads: 'Our brothers, the entire house of Israel, who are in distress and captivity, whether on sea or on land—may God have mercy on them and bring them from distress to relief, from darkness to light, and from bondage to redemption.' The name was chosen as a moving tribute, symbolizing unity and hope.
The colors of the Israeli flag were refreshed on the aircraft's tail, and EL AL's logo has been updated as part of the airline's vision to strengthen its connection with the Israeli public and represent Israel around the world. The new livery is part of EL AL's ongoing maintenance and rebranding strategy. In addition to its visual upgrade, the paint provides essential protection against corrosion, weather conditions, and natural wear and tear, and is applied in accordance with the strict standards of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
As part of EL AL's strategic plan, originally published in 2023 and recently updated, the airline is advancing efforts to expand and modernize its fleet, extend its global route network, and adopt cutting-edge technologies. These initiatives are designed to significantly enhance the flight and service experience while reinforcing EL AL's commitment to environmental responsibility in alignment with global ESG standards. As a key milestone in this transformation, EL AL has signed an agreement to purchase up to nine new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Concurrently, the airline is also set to grow and upgrade its narrow-body fleet, following its August 2024 announcement of the largest aircraft acquisition in its history: up to 31 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

Airlines divert flights as Israel

Airlines reroute or cancel flights after Israel strikes Iran, prompting airspace closures over Israel, Iran, Iraq, and Jordan for safety. Airlines around the world scrambled to reroute or cancel flights on Friday after Israel launched strikes on Iranian targets, prompting the closure of airspace over Israel, Iran, Iraq, and Jordan. The move triggered widespread disruption across international aviation networks, as major carriers sought to protect passengers and crews amid escalating regional tensions. According to real-time data from Flightradar24, air traffic was quickly cleared from the affected airspaces following Israel's attacks on what it described as Iranian nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories, and senior military leadership. Israeli authorities have warned that the military operation may continue in the coming days. In response, Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport was shut down until further notice, and Israel's air defence systems were placed on high alert amid fears of Iranian retaliation. Israel's national carrier El Al announced it was suspending all flights to and from Israel and relocating aircraft outside the country. Israir, another Israeli airline, said it was evacuating its planes from Tel Aviv's airport, which is expected to remain closed through the weekend. The aviation disruptions come just weeks after a missile launched by Yemen's Houthi rebels landed near Ben Gurion Airport, prompting several global airlines to preemptively suspend services to Tel Aviv. Meanwhile, Iranian authorities issued a notice closing their airspace indefinitely. Despite early reports of Israeli strikes, several commercial aircraft operated by Emirates, Lufthansa, and Air India were still in Iranian airspace at the time. Air India, which regularly flies over Iran en route to Europe and North America, confirmed that multiple flights — including services from New York, Vancouver, Chicago, and London – were diverted or returned to their departure points. Lufthansa also suspended all flights to Tehran and announced it would avoid flying over Iranian, Iraqi, and Israeli airspace until further notice. Emirates canceled flights to and from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iran, though the carrier has not yet issued an official statement. Aviation risk consultancy Osprey Flight Solutions notes that proliferating global conflict zones are increasingly affecting airline safety and operations. Since 2001, six commercial aircraft have been unintentionally shot down, and three have narrowly avoided similar fates. As the situation evolves, airlines continue to monitor developments, with further flight disruptions likely across the region.

Tragedy in India: Air India plane crashes, shaking the travel world

An Air India plane crashed in India, killing many, including British and Portuguese nationals, causing global concern. India – A profound sorrow and concern has swept across the global aviation and tourism sectors today, following the tragic news of an Air India plane crash just minutes after its takeoff from Ahmedabad, India. The flight, carrying 242 passengers and crew bound for London's Gatwick Airport, went down in a residential area, with initial reports indicating 'many killed.' The incident involves flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, an aircraft considered among the most modern and technologically advanced in airline fleets. The aircraft took off around 13:39 local time and, according to air traffic control, sent a 'Mayday' distress call before all communication was lost. Videos and images circulating show thick black smoke and flames rising from the crash site, which is reportedly a doctors' hostel. International Dimension and Implications The tragedy takes on an international dimension due to the nationalities of those on board. Air India confirmed that among the 242 individuals (217 adults and 11 children) were 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese, and one Canadian. The presence of such a large number of European citizens, particularly from Britain, which is a significant tourism market for Greece as well, adds an extra layer to the tragedy. The international community is watching developments with bated breath, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating he is 'heartbroken' and ordering all possible assistance to the rescue efforts. Similarly, the British Foreign Office is working closely with Indian authorities to ascertain the facts and provide support to those affected. Ahmedabad Airport has suspended all flight operations. Psychological Impact on the Travel Sector For the travel and tourism industry, especially in Greece, which is one of the world's leading tourist destinations, such events, though rare, inevitably have a psychological impact. The safety of air travel is a fundamental parameter for traveler confidence. Although statistics show that air travel is among the safest forms of transportation, high-profile accidents can cause temporary anxiety and influence travelers' decisions. Boeing, the manufacturer of the Dreamliner, announced it is gathering information about the incident, and its shares fell. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, while having a 'spotless safety record' before today's tragedy, has faced various controversies in the past regarding manufacturing quality and safety issues. Air India, now owned by the Indian conglomerate Tata Group, has activated an emergency center and support hotline for the families of the passengers. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and all those affected by this unspeakable tragedy. The travel world is closely monitoring developments, awaiting the results of the investigation into the cause of the accident and the broader impact it may have on public confidence in air travel.
