The New York Yankees traded Nestor Cortes and Claeb Durbin for All-Star closer Devin Williams in the offseason. Williams struggled early in his Yankees tenure, but has settled back into the closer role.
Williams had an 11.25 ERA through his first 10 games as a Yankee. He was stripped of closer duties in favor of Luke Weaver. Williams started playing better and was thrust back into the closer role when Weaver went to the injured list. Since then, he has a 1.17 ERA and five saves in eight games. However, Aaron Boone still does not seemingly trust him to give the Yankees more than one inning.
On Tuesday, Williams threw just nine pitches in the ninth inning. However, Boone did not send him out for the 10th inning, and he revealed that Williams will not be used like that in the future either.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 03: Devin Williams #38 of the New York Yankees throws a pitch during the ninth inning of the game against the Cleveland Guardians at Yankee Stadium on June 03, 2025 in New York City. More"Look, he's here as kind of a one-inning guy and that's what he's done the last couple years," Boone said, per the New York Post's Greg Joyce. "I think there's going to be a time when there's a four-out scenario, but I'm not prepared right now to send him out there for a two-inning outing."
Unlike Williams, Boone has used Weaver for two-inning outings multiple times this year. Williams is a two-time All-Star and two-time Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year. Most of his success has come as a one-inning pitcher, either setting up Josh Hader on the Milwaukee Brewers or as their closer.
"I feel like the bullpen works better when guys are going one inning," Williams said, per the New York Post.
Regardless of how the Yankees use Williams, it is good for the team that he is pitching well again. He is one of the best relievers in baseball when he's at his best, and borderline unhittable.

Minnesota Timberwolves will make the first selection of the second round of the NBA draft
Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA draft resumes Thursday night with the Minnesota Timberwolves making the first selection of the second round. The draft picks up where it left off at Barclays Center in Brooklyn — though in a much smaller portion of it than was used Wednesday for the first round. The second round begins with the No. 31 pick and this year runs through No. 59 instead of 60, with the New York Knicks having been penalized their selection for tampering by negotiating with Jalen Brunson too soon before eventually signing the guard away from Dallas in 2022. The NBA points to the success of players such as Brunson, who became an All-NBA selection in New York, and three-time MVP Nikola Jokic of Denver when touting the types of difference-makers who could come out of the second round. The Mavericks, who selected Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick on Wednesday, do not currently have a selection in Round 2. The NBA began a two-night format for the draft last year after doing it one night ended too late. ___ AP NBA: recommended

Yankees Trade Scenario Would Send DJ LeMahieu to Braves for $35 Million All-Star
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees have a need in their infield, specifically at second base. DJ LeMahieu is slashing .240/.313/.327 with just five extra base hits on the year. LeMahieu is no longer an All-Star or Gold Glover like he was in his prime. He still has one year left on his six-year, $90 million deal. However, if the Yankees want to reach their World Series aspirations, LeMahieu may have to be benched or moved. DUNEDIN, FLORIDA - MARCH 08: DJ LeMahieu #26 of the New York Yankees throws the ball to first base in the third inning against the Toronto Blue Jays during a 2024 Grapefruit League Spring Training... DUNEDIN, FLORIDA - MARCH 08: DJ LeMahieu #26 of the New York Yankees throws the ball to first base in the third inning against the Toronto Blue Jays during a 2024 Grapefruit League Spring Training game at TD Ballpark on March 08, 2024 in Dunedin, Florida. MoreTrading LeMahieu will not be easy with his contract and decline. However, ClutchPoints' Zachary Howell proposed this trade that would swap LeMahieu for an Atlanta Braves All-Star: Yankees receive: Ozzie Albies Braves receive: DJ LeMahieu and Roderick Arias (Yankees' No. 5 prospect) The Braves will not trade Albies or any of their stars if they are still in contention around the July 31 trade deadline. However, even if they are out of contention, they are not going to take on LeMahieu without a reason, and in this case, that reason is Arias. Albies is not having his best year, slashing .224/.298/.326 with just six home runs. However, the three-time All-Star is starting to look more like himself. He has started to swing the bat a little better since being moved down in the batting order, and could benefit from a change of scenery and a hitter-friendly ballpark like Yankee Stadium. Albies has $7 million club options for the next two seasons and is just 28 years old. He could be a key player for the Yankees. Last season, Jazz Chisholm Jr. came over from a struggling team and had a great run with the Yankees. Could Albies do the same?
