Yahoo08-04-2025

Veteran NBC News newswoman Andrea Mitchell and NBC's late-night sketch comedy series 'Saturday Night Live' will be honored at the 85th annual Peabody Awards ceremony, to be held June 1 in Beverly Hills, Calif., it was announced Tuesday.
Mitchell, who currently serves as NBC News' chief Washington and chief foreign affairs correspondent, will receive the Peabody Career Achievement Award. Mitchell joins an elite list of past honorees, which include Mel Brooks, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno, Dan Rather, Cicely Tyson and Carol Burnett.
Mitchell has been with NBC News for nearly five decades, three of which as the chief foreign affairs correspondent. During her tenure at the news organization, she has covered eight White House administrations, a dozen presidential races, multiple wars and landmark global events. She previously won a Peabody Award for her coverage of the Texas abortion ban and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Television Academy at the news and documentary Emmy Awards in 2019.
'Saturday Night Live,' currently in its 50th season, will receive the Peabody Institutional Award. It joins programs such as 'Star Trek,' 'The Simpsons,' '60 Minutes,' 'Fresh Air With Terry Gross' and 'Sesame Street' as past recipients of the honor.
Winner of three Peabody Awards, along with 101 Emmys and six WGA Awards, 'SNL' has remained a comedy and pop culture institution since its launch five decades ago under the tutelage of creator Lorne Michaels. The sketch series has produced memorable characters, from Roseanne Roseannadanna to Stefon, satirized politicians and presidents, and commented on headline-making news through 'Weekend Update' segments.
'Andrea Mitchell has been setting the standard for news correspondents with unparalleled coverage of politics and foreign policy for more than three decades. She has quite literally traveled the globe to bring us stories that have shaped history,' said Jeffrey Jones, executive director of Peabody, in a statement.
'And 'Saturday Night Live' is a cultural touchstone that has kept audiences tuning in for five decades through its cutting-edge sketch comedy, pinpoint political satire, and always relevant musical guests,' Jones continued. 'We are thrilled to recognize Mitchell and the 'SNL' community with these special Peabody honors.'
The Peabody Awards spotlight stories 'that defend public interest, encourage empathy and expand our understanding of the world.' Recipients of the Peabody, which includes categories in entertainment, documentary and news, are chosen every year by a board of jurors through unanimous vote.
Nominees for the Peabody Awards will be announced April 15 and 17, with winners revealed May 1.
Stand-up comedian and documentary producer Roy Wood Jr. has been tapped to host the Peabody Awards ceremony.

Harvey Weinstein Found Guilty on One Charge in New York Rape Retrial

Originally appeared on E! Online A portion of Harvey Weinstein's fate has been decided. A jury found the former Hollywood producer guilty of one of the three sex crimes charges in his New York retrial on June 11. Weinstein was convicted of the charge of a Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree, stemming from his 2006 alleged assault of former production assistant Miriam Haley. He was found not guilty of a charge of a Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree over his alleged assault of Kaja Sokola in 2006. The jury has yet to reach a verdict on the third count, relating to the alleged 2013 rape of aspiring actress Jessica Mann. (Deliberations are set to continue June 12.) Weinstein, 73, was originally found guilty of third-degree rape and one count of criminal sexual act in the first degree during his trial in 2020, resulting in a 23-year sentence behind bars, per NBC News. However, his conviction was overturned in April 2024, with New York's highest court determining that improper testimony had been allowed at the trial. 'We conclude that the trial court erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes,' the court said, "because that testimony served no material non-propensity purpose." In his retrial, he also faced a new allegation from Sokola, who said she met Weinstein at a club in 2002 when she was 16 and working as a fashion model, according to The New York Times. She alleged that he forcibly performed oral sex on her at a hotel in Manhattan four years later, leading to one more count of a first-degree criminal sexual act, per NBC News. 'They all had dreams of pursuing careers in the defendant's world, the entertainment industry,' prosecutor Nicole Blumberg told jurors June 3, per The Associated Press. "He was going to have their bodies and touch their bodies whether they wanted him to or not.' But, according to the outlet, Weinstein's lawyer argued, 'It's transactional, folks. Yes, he wants to fool around with them, and yes, they want something from him." Since the start of the #MeToo movement, over 80 women have accused the Oscar winner of sexual misconduct, though he maintains his interactions were consensual, per NBC. Weinstein—who was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer last year—is also serving 16 years in prison following a separate 2022 conviction of one count of forcible rape and two counts of sexual assault in his Los Angeles case. Rand Paul says Donald Trump's military parade could send the wrong message

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul criticized President Donald Trump's upcoming military parade, which will coincide with Trump's 79th birthday on June 14. In an interview with NBC News on June 10, the Kentucky Republican said he has never been a fan of "goose-stepping soldiers and big tanks and missiles rolling down the street," and he "wouldn't have done it." "I'm not sure what the actual expense of it is, but I'm not really, you know, we were always different than, you know, the images you saw in the Soviet Union and North Korea. We were proud not to be that,' Paul said. Paul added he wasn't "proposing" that's the image Trump wants to show, but he is still worried about the message the parade will send. The parade, which also coincides with the Army's 250th anniversary, will feature dozens of tanks, warplanes and 7,500 soldiers rumbling through the streets of Washington, D.C., according to USA Today. Democratic lawmakers have also criticized the event, saying the parade is for Trump's own political purposes. Trump, meanwhile, has argued the parade is about celebrating "the greatest military in the world." This isn't the first time Paul has disagreed with Trump's decisions or views. Last week, Trump lashed out at Paul for criticizing the tax and domestic policy bill GOP leaders and the president are trying to push through the Senate. Paul has also rallied against Trump's tariff proposals, along with fellow Kentucky Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, arguing they will cause prices at stores around the nation to rise.
