OpenAI argues to keep countersuit against Musk
OpenAI said it should be allowed to keep its countersuit against billionaire Elon Musk, saying the Tesla CEO's motion to dismiss the ChatGPT maker's claims has 'no grounding in facts'. In a court filing late on Wednesday, OpenAI said its countersuit, which accuses Musk of engaging in fraudulent business practices under California law, should be included in the expedited trial, rather than put on hold. OpenAI has argued that a $97.4 billion takeover bid for the company earlier this year from a Musk-led consortium was a 'sham bid' aimed at drumming up media frenzy.
OpenAI alleged the bid was leaked to the media before the proposal reached OpenAI's board. Last year, Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left before the firm became an AI juggernaut, sued OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman over the company's transition to a for-profit model. He accused OpenAI of straying from its founding mission.
Meta and Anduril to make MR gears for soldiers
Meta and defence tech startup Anduril Industries on Thursday announced a partnership to build mixed reality gear for 'warfighters' (soldiers) to control autonomous systems on battlefields. Meta will incorporate augmented reality and AI, presumably in the likes of glasses, goggles, or visors, with an Anduril data analytics platform called Lattice, the companies said in a joint release.
'Meta has spent the last decade building AI and AR to enable the computing platform of the future,' Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said. 'We're proud to partner with Anduril to help bring these technologies to the American servicemembers that protect our interests at home and abroad.' Since Trump took back the White House, Zuckerberg has courted the president with frequent visits and notable changes to corporate policies on matters like content moderation, aligning himself politically with the Republican administration. The Anduril alliance will have Meta taking part in courting the U.S. military.
Germany weighs 10% tax on online platforms
Germany is considering a 10% tax on platforms like Google and Facebook, its new minister of state for culture told magazine Stern, in a move likely to heighten trade tensions with the Trump administration. The proposal comes as Chancellor Friedrich Merz is expected to travel to Washington soon to meet with the U.S. President, although a trip has not yet been officially announced. Trump has in the past said he will not allow foreign governments to 'appropriate America's tax base for their own benefit'.
Culture Minister of State Wolfram Weimer said officials were drafting a legislative proposal while also seeking talks with platform operators that he accused of 'cunning tax evasion' to explore alternative solutions like voluntary contributions. Germany's ruling parties agreed in a deal earlier this year to consider the introduction of a digital services levy, but this was not on the list of projects the coalition wants to prioritise.

Trump also said Musk runs 'the largest free speech platform on the internet.' This wasn't the first time X went down recently. It was actually the third outage in just over a week, as per earlier outage happened on Monday because of a fire at a U.S. data center owned by X. Another outage last week was blamed by Musk on a "massive cyber attack". Since Musk bought X in 2022, crashes and tech problems have gone up a lot. This is partly because new tech workers at X were messing with the X API, which helps other software work with X, as per The Guardian that Musk left the White House, people might think he'd have more time to fix problems at his companies, like X. But Trump joked that "Elon's really not leaving", hinting he'll still be around in some way. No official reason has been given yet for what caused this huge crash on X, as per The Daily Beast reason is unclear, but it happened shortly after his praise and during ongoing tech this was the third major crash in a week, one happened because of a fire, and another was blamed on a cyberattack.

FIEO worried over US tariff hikes on steel, aluminium
New Delhi: The Federation of Indian Export Organisations ( FIEO ) Saturday raised concerns about potential disruption to India's steel and aluminium exports to the US after President Donald Trump's announcement of a plan to double import tariffs on steel and aluminium to 50% from 25%. They particularly fear that the exports of value-added and finished steel products and auto-components, stainless steel pipes, and structural steel components could be hurt. This potential increase comes under Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act of 1962, a law that allows the president to impose tariffs or other trade restrictions if imports are deemed a threat to national security. "These products are part of India's growing engineering exports, and higher duties could erode our price competitiveness in the American market," said SC Ralhan, president, FIEO. The US is among the top destinations for Indian steel manufacturers, who have been gradually increasing market share through high-quality production and competitive pricing. Exporters said that though the decision stems from domestic policy considerations in the US, such sharp increases in tariffs send discouraging signals to global trade and manufacturing supply chains. "It's unfortunate that while BTA negotiations are going on, such unilateral tariff increases should be done. It only makes the work of the negotiators much more difficult and complicated. Chadha added that since the UK has been given exemption from Section 232, the same exemption should also be given with TRQ restrictions to India.
