Women's Fai Cup wrap: Shelbourne and Athlone Town advance
Kate Mooney scored a late winner as holders Shelbourne edged past Galway United in their Sports Direct Women's FAI Cup first-round clash on Saturday.
The striker, who scored a hat-trick in Shels' league win over Sligo Rovers last week, found in the 89th minute to send the north Dublin side past Phil Trill's westerners by a 2-1 scoreline at Tolka Park.
Mooney's fellow forward Mackenzie Anthony had given Shelbourne the lead shortly after half-time but Amanda Smith levelled for Galway just before the hour mark, with the game remaining locked at one-goal apiece until the late winner.
SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division leaders Athlone Town are also through to the second round after cruising past non-league Terenure Rangers by a 6-0 margin.
Captain Izzy Groves found the net twice for the midlanders, including the opener, while Roisin Molloy, Kelly Brady, Natalie McNally and Hannah Waesch rounded off the scoring for an Athlone side who will face Cardiff City in the Champions League qualifiers next month.
Treaty United were also free-scoring as they hit eight goals on the way to easily accounting for Ferns United 8-0.
Ciaran Breslin was on the double in the first half before Aibhlinn Cotter's free-kick gave Treaty a three-goal advantage at the break.
Kate Lee came on the break and quickly added a fourth with Sirena Celebrini, Amy Tierney and Cotter, again, on target before Hayley Nolan turned into her own net late on.
DLR Waves edged a thriller with Sligo Rovers, the away side winning 3-2.
Goals either side of the break from Keelin Dodd, a powerful header, and Amber Cosgrove had DLR Waves two ahead, before Mairead McIntyre showed good composure in the box to halve the deficit in the 62nd minute.
It was Dodd though who secured their passage with an 87th minute penalty with Anna McDaniel striking late on in reply for Sligo.
Shamrock Rovers came from behind to overcome Premier Division newcomers Waterford 3-1 at Tallaght Stadium.
Olivia Shannon had given Waterford the lead but Lauren Walsh's own goal saw both sides go in level at the break.
However, it was the Hoops who would push on in the second half as Anna Butler and Maria Reynolds sent Rovers through.

'Almost perfect' PSG rout Messi's Miami
Joao Neves scored twice as Paris St Germain swept aside Lionel Messi's Inter Miami 4-0 at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday to secure their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals with ruthless efficiency. The French side asserted their dominance within six minutes, with Neves moving unmarked to the far post to power home a precise header from a free kick. Neves doubled their lead in the 39th minute after a flowing move as Bradley Barcola found Fabian Ruiz, whose exquisite cross was clinically converted by the Portuguese. Any hopes of a Miami comeback were extinguished in the first half as Messi and company barely got a look in, and their misery deepened further when Tomas Aviles turned Desire Doue's cross into his own net. Achraf Hakimi added the fourth, pouncing after his initial shot struck the crossbar, on the stroke of halftime. "It was an almost perfect match, we created a lot of chances, and I'm happy yet I think we still need to improve, that's football," PSG coach Luis Enrique said. Messi became more involved after the break and his header was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma following a quick counter-attack, while he struck the wall with a late free kick that brought the crowd to their feet in anticipation of a consolation goal that never materialised. "I'm very proud of my players. Today you could see the difference in class, but football has given us the chance to compete. This is probably the best team in the world with a great coach, but we took them on," Miami coach Javier Mascherano said. "There's a huge lesson to be learned from here. We're going to be reviewing all of this and I think that they go hand in hand now if we are going to be able to take stock of this experience. "I think that this is going to help us when we take this to our National League. It goes without saying that it depends on our own personal intelligence that we have at our disposal as a team to be able to leverage this experience. The Champions League winners march on to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winners of the clash between Flamengo and Bayern Munich. Reuters

Douglas James-Taylor on the move after turning down Drogs offer
Douglas James-Taylor has rejected an offer to make a permanent switch to Drogheda United and is on brink of a fresh move after his loan spell from Walsall came to an end. James-Taylor spent three seasons at Walsall, heading to the Drogs in July 2024. He helped to kick-start a real upswing in the team's form which climaxed in a memorable FAI Cup final win against Derry City and a 3-1 defeat of Bray Wanderers in the SSE Airtricity Men's Promotion/Relegation play-off. A quad injury meant James-Taylor did not feature for Drogheda until April this year, but his return massively boosted Kevin Doherty's attack and helped maintain momentum in the league. The Drogs are fourth after Friday's 3-0 loss at Derry. In a statement, Drogheda said: "Drogheda United can confirm that Douglas James-Taylor has departed the club following the conclusion of his loan spell. "The club had made a significant offer to James-Taylor to make the move to the club permanent. However, he has decided to pursue an opportunity elsewhere. "James-Taylor departs having scored 15 goals in 35 games. We thank Douglas for his contribution to the club, particularly last season with his role in our FAI Cup win and maintaining our Premier Division status."
