David Hayes hopes for a Champions & Chater upset with Rubylot against ‘horse to beat' Dubai Honour

Trainer praying for some rain to help his Classic Cup (1,800m) winner measure up at the elite level
Dubai Honour is the 'horse to beat' in Sunday's Group One Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) but David Hayes is relishing the chance to try and cause an upset with Classic Cup (1,800m) winner Rubylot.
Rubylot ran sixth in the first leg of the Classic Series, the Classic Mile, before defying $14 odds to come from nearly last to first to mow down My Wish and win the Classic Cup.
The four-year-old ran another stormer when finishing strongly into fifth in the BMW Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) and was last seen finishing an unlucky sixth in the Group One FWD QE II Cup (2,000m) on Champions Day.
Rubylot was shuffled to the back of the field after an inside trip and his rider Hugh Bowman had to take the daring route between horses, copping a sizeable bump before lashing home.

Hayes reports Rubylot is in flying form in the mornings as he prepares to watch the Rubick galloper have his final piece of work.
'We're up at Conghua for his final piece of work on Tuesday before Sunday's big day,' said Hayes. 'He's working like a horse that's really peaking and not going off.
'He's by Rubick so some people would say he wouldn't run a mile and a half, but if you look at the dam's side, it's a very dour European type.
'With luck, I think he could have easily placed in the QE II Cup and that's the elite level. Hugh [Bowman] is very confident he can run a placing and be competitive with the locals.'
The race has been billed as a clash between the Triple Crown-seeking Voyage Bubble and top-class foreign raider Dubai Honour, with the rest of the runners making up a supporting cast.
Voyage Bubble will bid to become just the second Hong Kong Triple Crown winner on Sunday after wins in the Group One Stewards' Cup (1,600m) and the Group One Hong Kong Gold Cup (2,000m), but like a vast majority of the locals he has stamina to prove on his first try at the trip.
No such reservations are held for William Haggas' Dubai Honour, who is a two-time Group One winner at the 2,400m distance, most recently when flashing home to collect the Group One Tancred Stakes at Rosehill (2,400m).
He is proven at Sha Tin by virtue of his narrow second in the Group One Hong Kong Vase (2,400m) back in December and Hayes is under no illusions about who is the horse to beat.

'Dubai Honour is the horse to beat, he's got nothing to prove compared to the local horses,' said Hayes. 'People have billed it as a clash between him and Voyage Bubble and I do see it that way as well.
'If there's a horse that can cause an upset, maybe that's us, but realistically I'd be over the moon to run in the first three. I have incredible respect for Voyage Bubble.
'I haven't looked at Voyage Bubble's pedigree but he's very good at 2,000m – if it rains then Rubylot will love it and it will make things very interesting.'

Hong Kong athletics bosses dismiss trail runners' complaints over ‘crazy, dangerous' race

Athletics bosses have defended their handling of a trail race that runners called 'crazy and dangerous', adding if competitors had concerns they should not have taken part. Advertisement Nearly a week after complaints first surfaced on social media over the Hong Kong Trail Championships in Tai Mei Tuk, organisers issued a statement on Friday dismissing any criticism and pointing to a host of other races that had also been held in late May. However, the Hong Kong Association of Athletics Affiliates (HKAAA) did apologise for 'inconvenience caused to local residents' after rubbish left behind following the event resulted in one of the city's oldest and best-preserved rural settlements being littered with plastic waste. Officials had come under fire for opting to stage the 62.4km (38.8 mile) championships – which served as the selection race for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in September – on May 25, when temperatures reached 26 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) and humidity was high. In its statement, the HKAAA said while 'an earlier month with an average lower temperature would be preferable, holding trail running races in May in Hong Kong is not unusual'. Lai Chi Wo is one of Hong Kong's oldest rural settlements. Photo: University of Hong Kong It then referenced 10 other privately organised races that have taken place in May, including two 50km events staged by Action Asia Events. Of the rest, the longest was 27km, and several were below 10km.

Luke Ferraris ready to dazzle at Sha Tin after shaking off fever

Luke Ferraris has shaken off the worst of the fever that sidelined him from Wednesday night's Happy Valley meeting and is hoping he has the ammunition to continue his strong recent form at Sha Tin on Saturday. Victorious at the past two meetings he has ridden at, Ferraris will feature in both of Saturday's Group Three features but must overcome barrier 10 aboard Lucky With You in the Sha Tin Vase (1,200m) and Chancheng Glory in the Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m). 'Lucky With You is going to need the rain to stay away. He's definitely more effective on a firm track, so that doesn't look great, and he's also got a bad barrier to contend with as well,' said Ferraris. 'But he's got nice horses drawn around him, so if he can get on the back of a nice one and get a nice pull through the run, hopefully he can bring that Class One form up to this Group Three. Seriously impressive, Dazzling Fit! 🤯@EustaceRacing's 3YO son of Ribchester explodes to a first win at Sha Tin under @LukeFerraris...#LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 4, 2025 'Chancheng Glory also has a bad barrier but his raceday form is honest and if the pace is on and he can get a nice run in transit, hopefully he closes off well.' Ferraris fared better at the draw with smart youngster Dazzling Fit, who has gate three but must carry 135lbs as he shoots for consecutive victories in the Class Four Tin Sam Handicap (1,400m). 'Dazzling Fit has finally pulled a gate, which is nice. Hopefully he can lob somewhere around midfield. It will be a good test. He's a young horse with a lot of weight to shoulder, but he is a big fella so hopefully it's not too much of an issue for him. He's definitely a horse on the rise,' said Ferraris, who also looks to be a winning chance aboard Hong Kong debutant Infinite Resolve in the Class Three Tai Wai Handicap (1,200m). 'Infinite Resolve's last trial at the Valley was good and he looks to be a versatile horse – he can go forward or he can go back. I'll see what Mark [Newnham] wants to do. His prep going into the run has been good, he hasn't really put a foot wrong and he seems honest enough. It will be interesting to see what he does.'
