The NRL's new Perth team sign footy legend Mal Meninga to fill their most important job
The Perth Bears hope the presence of Mal Meninga will give the NRL 's 18th team immediate cut-through in an AFL-dominated city after unveiling the Immortal as the head coach of the start-up franchise.
At a press conference in Sydney on Friday, Meninga was locked in as the Bears' inaugural coach on a three-year deal.
It is his first foray into club coaching in more than 25 years.
Meninga has dropped his role as coach of the Australian Test team ahead of an end-of-season Ashes tour.
The 64-year-old will now set about building a competitive roster for the Bears' first NRL season in 2027.
'This is one of the most exciting challenges of my career,' Meninga said.
'To have the opportunity to take our great game back to Western Australia to start a new team and to bring with it a much-loved rugby league community and heritage brand in the Bears.
'It's a great privilege and responsibility I've been given to be one of the leaders in the formation of the club.
'I'm looking forward getting to stuck into the work that needs to be done to deliver a team that represents WA and is competitive from day one.'
Meninga has built a terrific resume working as a representative coach with the Kangaroos, Queensland and Papua New Guinea, but hasn't worked at club level since he left the Canberra Raiders in 2001.
His move to Perth leaves the job of Kangaroos coach wide open.
One of the most prestigious titles in Australian rugby league, it's sure to attract some of the biggest names in the sport.
Former Kangaroos skipper and NRL legend Brad Fittler has already been connected to the role, with Channel Nine commentator and Bulldogs boss Phil Gould throwing his weight behind 'Freddy'.
'[Fittler] has worked at all levels of representative football from the under 16s, 18s, forming the pathways for NSW. He is the one with the experience of those camps.
'I don't know if he wants it. If he wants it, I hope he gets it.'

Surprising Aussie footy venue beats the MCG to be ranked in the top 10 stadiums in the world
Melbourne's Marvel Stadium has pipped the MCG to be recognised as one of the top-10 stadiums in the world. According to the 2025 Pollstar Mid-Year Top 50 Worldwide Stadium Rankings, the Docklands Stadium sits fifth in the world as one of the highest-grossing stadiums. The 53,343-capacity venue also ranks seventh for the highest number of stadium ticket sales as part of the rankings, surpassing the MCG, SCG, Adelaide Oval and the Suncorp Stadium. The rankings are measured between November 14, 2024, and May 14, 2025, with the venue now rubbing shoulders with some illustrious venues around the world, including California 's SoFi Stadium and Japan's Tokyo Dome, which both ranked inside the top-10. While this is the first time Marvel has been recognised inside Pollstar's top-10 venues. The acknowledgement also comes 12 months after the stadium broke into the 2024 Billboard Boxscore rankings after it was ranked the top venue in the world for its top-grossing concert revenue figures during October. Despite boasting a much bigger capcity, Marvel topped the MCG for ticket sales to be ranked as the fifth highest-grossing stadium in the world Marvel was first opened in 2000 and is currently owned by the AFL. It cost approximately $460million to build and last year underwent a $225m upgrade, which was funded by the Victorian Government. The refurbishment works included the addition of two new video screens situated under the stadium's roof as well as amendments to the stadium's infrastructure, to enhance fan experience. Over the past year, many fans have flocked to the venue to watch both cricket and footy, but the venue has also hosted some massive concerts. Luke Combs recently sold out the venue with two shows in February, with 111,200 fans attending the concert. A month later, US rock band Green Day took to the stage at Marvel for a gig in March, with 60,000 fans in attendance. Coldplay hosted four gigs at Marvel back in November, while the Weeknd and PINK all played last summer and plenty more big events are coming to the stadium to celebrate its 25th anniversary. In October and November, Oasis will play three concerts at the venue as part of their reunion tour, while Metallica and Lady Gaga are also due to play at the venue before the year is out. Marvel sat fifth behind Mexo City's Estadio GNP Seguros, the SoFi Stadium in California, Allianz Parque in Brazil and the Autordromo Hermanos Rodrigues in Mexico for gross sales. It also comes as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Wrexham are now set to travel Down Under for a pre-season tour and are due to play at Marvel on June 11.

Richardson Hitchins schools George Kambosos Jr and scores body-shot KO
Richardson Hitchins produced a clinic against George Kambosos Jr on Saturday to retain the IBF super-lightweight title, stopping the former world champion in round eight. American Hitchins comfortably outlanded Kambosos Jr in every single round, before dropping the Australian with a left hook to the body in the eighth frame. Kambosos Jr, who turned 32 on the day of the fight, made it to his feet but winced at the referee on the eight count and did not look prepared to continue boxing. As such, the official waved off the fight. With that, Hitchins kept his belt and his unbeaten record, moving to 20-0 (8 knockouts). Meanwhile, Kambosos Jr fell to 22-4 (10 KOs) and failed to add to his two world-title reigns at lightweight. It was a major disappointment for Jay, as the emotional scene between the pair was cut from the show. She added with frustration that the Channel 10 producers 'couldn't even give me that!' Jay said her appearance on the series was deeply affected by rumours that she was using the reality show to become famous and the gossip surrounding her relationship with singer Moses Mackay from the New Zealand version of The Bachelor. She said her relationship with Moses was 'irrelevant' and has vehemently denied the speculation. 'I just wouldn't put myself through that situation for 1000 followers or a blue tick on Instagram. It is not worth it,' she told The Daily Telegraph. 'I went on that show hoping to find love and unfortunately I didn't find love but I did have a great experience and I don't regret it,' she added.
