
Google unveils Gemini AI upgrade for universal assistant vision
Google has detailed developments in its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) platform and outlined plans to expand the capabilities of multimodal foundation models, with a focus on integrating these systems into products for everyday use.
Over the past decade, Google has concentrated on foundational AI research, including the development of the Transformer architecture that underpins large language models. The company has also advanced AI agent systems through projects such as AlphaGo and AlphaZero, which demonstrated learning and planning in complex games. These methods have been applied to fields including quantum computing, mathematics, life sciences and algorithmic discovery.
Google stated, "We've applied these techniques to make breakthroughs in quantum computing, mathematics, life sciences and algorithmic discovery. And we continue to double down on the breadth and depth of our fundamental research, working to invent the next big breakthroughs necessary for artificial general intelligence (AGI)."
The company is working to enhance its Gemini 2.5 Pro model into what it refers to as a "world model" that is capable of contextual understanding, planning and simulation. According to Google, "This is why we're working to extend our best multimodal foundation model, Gemini 2.5 Pro, to become a 'world model' that can make plans and imagine new experiences by understanding and simulating aspects of the world, just as the brain does."
Progress in creating these models has drawn from previous work in training AI agents for complex games such as Go and StarCraft, as well as the development of tools like Genie 2, which is able to generate interactive 3D simulated environments from a single image prompt. Google stated, "We've been taking strides in this direction for a while, from our pioneering work training agents to master complex games like Go and StarCraft, to building Genie 2, which is capable of generating 3D simulated environments that you can interact with, from a single image prompt."
Gemini models are already demonstrating emerging "world model" capabilities, including applying knowledge and reasoning to simulate environments, as well as robotics training. Google noted, "Already, we can see evidence of these capabilities emerging in Gemini's ability to use world knowledge and reasoning to represent and simulate natural environments, Veo's deep understanding of intuitive physics, and the way Gemini Robotics teaches robots to grasp, follow instructions and adjust on the fly."
Developing Gemini into a "world model" is described by Google as a critical step in producing a universal AI assistant. The company explained, "Making Gemini a world model is a critical step in developing a new, more general and more useful kind of AI — a universal AI assistant. This is an AI that's intelligent, understands the context you are in, and that can plan and take action on your behalf, across any device."
Google is aiming to transform the Gemini app into an assistant that can manage everyday administrative tasks and provide personalised recommendations. The company said, "Our ultimate vision is to transform the Gemini app into a universal AI assistant that will perform everyday tasks for us, take care of our mundane admin and surface delightful new recommendations — making us more productive and enriching our lives."
This effort begins with capabilities such as video understanding, screen sharing and memory, first explored through the Project Astra research prototype. In the past year, features such as improved voice output, enhanced memory, and computer control have been integrated into Gemini Live. Google commented, "Over the past year, we've been integrating capabilities like these into Gemini Live for more people to experience today. We continue to relentlessly improve and explore new innovations at the frontier. For example, we upgraded voice output to be more natural with native audio, we've improved memory and added computer control."
Google is collecting feedback from trusted testers on these capabilities, with plans to make them available through Gemini Live, new experiences in Search, the Live API for developers and additional devices such as smart glasses. The company emphasised its commitment to safety and responsibility, stating, "Through every step of this process, safety and responsibility are central to our work. We recently conducted a large research project, exploring the ethical issues surrounding advanced AI assistants, and this work continues to inform our research, development and deployment."
In addition, Google is investigating how AI agentic capabilities can assist users in multitasking through Project Mariner, which is designed to support human-agent interaction, primarily in web browsers. Project Mariner agents can now complete up to ten different tasks concurrently, such as information searches, bookings, online shopping and research. "Project Mariner now includes a system of agents that can complete up to ten different tasks at a time. These agents can help you look up information, make bookings, buy things, do research and more — all at the same time," according to Google.
The updated Project Mariner is available to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States, and its computer use capabilities will be introduced into the Gemini API, with plans for broader integration across Google products later in the year.
Google concluded, "With this, and all our groundbreaking work, we're building AI that's more personal, proactive and powerful, enriching our lives, advancing the pace of scientific progress and ushering in a new golden age of discovery and wonder."

Drones can be worker bees too
My Oxford Dictionary is way out of date because the subject I would have a look at this week is the modern drone so when I went to my dictionary for its definition it stated "male or non- worker bee", that's all. While I find the drone bee an interesting insect as they only make up about 1-2% of a hive of 50,000 female worker bees or more who collect the pollen and nectar, protect the hive and raise a new queen and when the time is right she flies out of the hive to mate with several drones. It seems to be their sole purpose in the hive's life cycle is its procreation. However, when I went to Google there was no mention of the bee and its definition of a drone is an "unmanned aircraft vehicle (UAV) can be controlled remotely or fly autonomously". Essentially, it is a flying robot capable of carrying a payload for various tasks. While the concept has been around for decades its only in the 10 years or so that they've come into prominence. The United States army's stealth drone was designed to evade detection and used for intelligence-gathering, reconnaissance and potentially combat operations. I think the modern drone has been given the wrong name because they are workers. The first one I was familiar with was a glorified toy and could be bought for a few dollars a but now they are capable of lifting over 1000kg. In the last few years different businesses, organisations and government departments are finding more and more uses, such as traffic monitoring, aerial photography, surveying and police crowd surveillance. But the drone is also revolutionising agriculture as Kiwi ingenuity makes them bigger and adapts them to perform tasks once restricted to helicopters or fixed winged planes. On the farm, Cameron engaged a company with drones to spray gorse in a couple of steep gullies. The drone carried 50 litres of chemical, calibrated to be of the strength and volume if it was sprayed by a helicopter, and was cheaper. Three months on, the gorse is not healthy, but 12 months on will tell the full story. Small ones can be used for stock handling. Will every farmer have one, if they prove to be cost-effective? They can perform tasks like spraying crops, spreading fertilisers and insecticides, sowing seeds on steep country, pest control and even firefighting. There are rules, regulations, training and costs regarding bigger drones that pilots must adhere to.

Fake CAPTCHA scam targets 2,353 WordPress sites, warns CyberCX
CyberCX has issued a warning to Australians regarding a phishing campaign targeting WordPress websites through the use of fake CAPTCHA prompts. The campaign, referred to as DarkEngine, involves threat actors embedding fraudulent CAPTCHA prompts into legitimate WordPress sites, putting website users at risk of various types of malware, including information stealers and remote access tools. According to CyberCX, at least 2,353 unique websites have been identified as likely compromised by this campaign, with 82 of these belonging to organisations in Australia and New Zealand. Within Australia, the affected websites are predominantly small to medium-sized businesses, spanning a range of sectors from strip clubs to educational platforms for children. The DarkEngine campaign employs a multi-layered approach. Initially, the perpetrator creates convincing replicas of WP Engine, a management tool widely used by businesses to oversee their WordPress websites. By leveraging a technique known as search engine optimisation (SEO) poisoning, the threat actor is able to position fake WP Engine links above legitimate ones in Google search results. As a result, genuine WP Engine login credentials from website administrators can be harvested and subsequently used to take control of the affected websites to inject fake CAPTCHA prompts. The campaign's intention is to reach the vast number of visitors to these compromised websites, exposing them to the risk of malware infection through socially engineered prompts. Katherine Mansted, Executive Director of CyberCX Intelligence, commented on the sophistication of the campaign: "This threat actor is a savvy, highly capable and well-resourced financially-motivated criminal. They are operating a scaled operation here, gaining access to thousands of real websites and infecting them with malware that hits unsuspecting internet users. "Fake CAPTCHA is an increasingly common technique criminals use to infect Australians' computers with malware. They look similar to real CAPTCHAs – a way to test whether a website visitor is a real person or a bot – but prompt the unsuspecting user to run malicious commands, potentially allowing criminals to gain remote access to their computers. "Never follow a CAPTCHA command that requires you to copy and paste text and be vigilant for any unexpected downloads after completing a CAPTCHA. Along with unusual URLs, pop-ups and poorly designed CAPTCHA formats, these are the tell-tail signs of a fake CAPTCHA." The fraudulent CAPTCHA prompts associated with DarkEngine are described as a variation of ClickFix, a social engineering tactic aimed at manipulating users into executing malicious instructions. These techniques have connections to activities used by recognised financially motivated cyber crime groups. CyberCX Intelligence has stated that it has been reaching out to organisations whose websites have been affected as part of an effort to improve the security of digital communities. The organisation has provided several recommendations for website administrators and organisations. WP Engine administrators are advised to audit account activity logs for unexpected logins, particularly those originating from unfamiliar proxy services and VPNs. WordPress site administrators should check for any signs of unexpected plugins, content injections within theme files, and successful requests containing keywords such as "emergency_login", "check_plugin", and "urlchange". Additionally, CyberCX stresses the importance of educating staff about ClickFix techniques, such as fake CAPTCHA, and the risks posed by SEO manipulation potentially leading them to engage with malicious sites. Organisations are also encouraged to consider providing reputable password managers to staff, which can help alert users if the site they are visiting is not legitimate.
