Stretch of Foothills Parkway to close for more post-earthquake bridge inspections

Yahoo14-05-2025

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WATE) — Great Smoky Mountains National Park will close part of the Foothills Parkway on Wednesday to conduct more bridge inspections in the wake of the 4.1-magnitude earthquake that shook the region over the weekend.
Foothills Parkway between Wears Valley and Walland will be closed on May 14 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for additional bridge inspections.
Initial assessments of roads, tunnels and bridges in the park found no apparent damage. While this section of the roadway was inspected on Saturday and reopened on Sunday, a park release said that engineers are completing this further inspection out of an abundance of caution.
LIST: Strongest recorded earthquakes in East Tennessee
The 4.1-magnitude quake was confirmed near the state border of Tennessee and North Carolina on the morning of May 10, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was the strongest recorded earthquake in the 6 News viewing area since a 4.7 magnitude earthquake near Alcoa in 1973.
