What's next The judge ordered a competency hearing, at which the doctor who submitted the report will appear, for August. The backstory The tactical situation started on the night of Thursday, May 8. It lasted nearly 38 hours and ended with the suspect – since identified as Novak – in custody on Saturday morning, May 10. The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office said a man with weapons had barricaded himself inside a home and was "extremely dangerous." After Novak was taken into custody, the sheriff's office said there was no longer a threat to the public. According to the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office, it all started with reports of multiple gunshots on Fox Glen Road. Deputies monitored the area but didn't hear any gunshots. Law enforcement was able to reach the man over the phone – who acknowledged he was playing loud music and firing weapons. The man then said he was going to keep playing music and would shoot anyone who came to his home. Further investigation determined the man was firing several guns – including an automatic rifle – in unknown directions, posing a "significant threat" to the community and deputies. The sheriff's office advised neighbors to shelter in place, specifically in the basements of their homes, due to the high-powered nature of the man's weapons. Negotiators tried to engage the man and deescalate the situation for several hours, but the sheriff's office said the man remained uncooperative and threatened to "go full auto" and kill anyone who approached. He provided further information that he was heavily armed and would use force against officers. The sheriff's office said the man was seen aiming a rifle toward law enforcement vehicles on multiple occasions. He was eventually taken into custody after the use of "non-lethal tactical resources." The standoff resulted in substantial damage to the home. The sheriff's office said a private construction company was contracted to stabilize and reinforce the structure so investigators could search inside, where they found multiple guns, among other items of significance. After he was taken into custody, Novak was taken to a behavioral health facility. He was later booked into the Ozaukee County Jail. MILWAUKEE - Jonathan Caravello pleaded not guilty on Tuesday, June 10, to a charge of second-degree reckless homicide in connection with the death of a man on Milwaukee's south side on May 5. Before Caravello entered his plea Tuesday, a Milwaukee police detective testified in Caravello's preliminary hearing. The defense motioned to dismiss the case, which was denied by the court. The judge then found probable cause to hold Caravello over for trial. What we know According to the criminal complaint, Milwaukee police responded on Monday, May 5 to the area near 37th and Orchard for a battery complaint. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a man lying on the pavement in an alley; he was unconscious and not breathing. Firefighters arrived on the scene and provided medical assistance, but the man was declared deceased. Investigators learned the victim had been in an altercation with a person living across the alley from him. That person was later identified as the defendant, Jonathan Caravello. When the victim returned, the woman told detectives he and Caravello began fighting in the alley. During this time, the complaint says Caravello "got the person in a choke hold." He also "got a wooden bat and threw it at the person" and got him back in a choke hold one more time. The woman said "she and Caravello returned to his backyard and she went back into the alley and saw that the person was still on the ground," the complaint says. Police recovered video that recorded the interactions between Caravello and the victim. The video records "Caravello on top of (the victim) and (the victim) can be heard saying, it appears, 'You won.' During the fight, Caravello repeated yells that he is going to kill (the victim). Caravello eventually gets off of (the victim) and (the victim) is not seen moving again," the complaint says. What they're saying When police questioned Caravello, he said that he got into a tussle with the victim -- and that the victim "had a small folding knife that cut him," the complaint says. During that tussle, Caravello said he began to choke the victim and he "stopped the choke hold when he got tired." The complaint says Caravello "admitted telling (the victim) that he was going to kill him, but he said this only after (the victim) said he was going to shoot him. He never saw a gun." What we know Angel Ramos-Arce, 35, was taken into custody and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon following the June 9 incident near the Circle K located at 4692 West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway. According to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, a deputy on patrol was flagged down by a woman who reported that her brother had been assaulted with a machete and was heading to the hospital with the suspect. Deputies located the victim at the hospital and determined the altercation stemmed from a verbal argument between the victim and Ramos-Arce. Investigators found blood inside Ramos-Arce's truck and recovered the machete from the truck bed. Ramos-Arce was booked into the Osceola County Jail.
