Jwaneng, or "a gem place" in Setswana, is a name that says it all—a name that the operation richly deserves for living up to its name time and time again. Since operations began in 1982, Jwaneng has produced millions of carats of diamonds. Three giant kimberlite pipes, volcanic rock structures known to be diamondiferous, dominate its production.
In 2023, Jwaneng mined a record 13.3 million carats of diamonds, solidifying its reputation as the world's richest diamond mine, valued at an estimated £1 billion.

The background of Jwaneng dates from the 1970s when geologists at De Beers discovered the kimberlite-bearing zone. The initial geological discovery soon turned out to be a world-class mining venture. There have been various developments to the mine over the years in order to make it more productive and lengthen the years it has to operate.
One of such significant developments is the Cut-9 project, which is a £1.5 billion project to add more years to the life of the mine to a minimum of 2035. The project is expected to produce an extra 53 million carats of diamonds. In January 2024, a project to extend the underground was officially sanctioned. The expensive but visionary plan would not only increase diamond production but also generate approximately £20 billion of profit in the next decades. Other than this, the plan will create thousands of jobs that will enhance the economic resilience both at the national and local community level.
Jwaneng is vital to the economy of the nation, contributing 60 to 70 percent of Debswana's overall revenue. Its prosperity reconfirms Botswana as one of the dominant players in the international diamond market.
Jwaneng: Technological powerhouse in diamond mining
The mineral extraction in Jwaneng is technologically sophisticated and extremely efficient. Bulk drilling begins the process to grind rock that travels to the plant by massive vehicles. In the plant, the sophisticated equipment includes X-ray fluorescence and laser sorters—which are housed in advanced units called CARP (Completely Automated Recovery Plant) and FISH (Fully Integrated Sort House)—and they precisely pinpoint diamonds from ore.
In spite of its mammoth size, Jwaneng has also started to undertake environmentally friendly mining. Like all big mines, it struggles with dealing with waste rock and ecological footprint. It was, however, the first mine operation to be ISO 14001 certified in Botswana in 2000 as a reward for its initiatives towards environmentally friendly practices.

British Airways expects India's ‘big middle class' segment to fuel travel demand amid expansion plans
London-based airline operator British Airways Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sean Doyle expects India's 'big and emerging' middle class to fuel the nation's travel demand in the next 10 years amid the company's expansion plans with help from the India-UK free trade agreement. 'I think that the growth is going to be incredibly exciting, and something that you won't see. It's a once-in-a-generation growth opportunity here, what's happening in India,' the CEO told the news agency PTI. In an interview with the news agency, the CEO, Sean Doyle, said that the company plans to further expand its air routes, flight frequencies, and cargo operations, leveraging the India-UK free trade agreement. According to the agency report, the airline currently operates 56 flights from five Indian cities every week. These flights include three weekly flights from Mumbai, two daily flights from Delhi, and one daily flight from Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Doyle also highlighted that India serves as a 'very important' market for British Airways, as the airline plans to reintroduce first-class seats in the Boeing 787-9 aircraft flying between Mumbai and the London Heathrow route later this year. 'I think we want to be part of the growth of aviation in India. We have been part of it for 100 years... about 2,500 people work for British Airways in India... outside of the United States, our biggest single market is India,' Doyle told the news agency. British Airways CEO Sean Doyle expects more cargo opportunities between India and the United Kingdom (UK) due to the two nations' Free Trade Agreement (FTA). 'I expect more cargo being exported from India under the FTA. And I would expect as well that it would be an increase in certain niche exports coming into India as well. Not necessarily out of the UK but also out of the surrounding kind of markets that we serve,' the airline CEO told the news agency. As the world still remains uncertain about the US President Donald Trump's imposed tariffs, Doyle said that everyone is still watching what is happening and the impact of these import duties. President Trump's decision to impose 'reciprocal tariffs' on all good imported from other world nations fueled a international tariff war which is raging and causing concerns of uncertainty to date. Data collected from India's aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), shows that the number of passengers carried by domestic airlines during the January to April 2025 period witnessed a 9.87 per cent rise at 575.13 lakhs or over 5.75 crore, compared year-on-year (YoY) with 523.46 or more than 5.23 crore in the same period a year ago. The passenger air traffic also witnessed an 8.45 per cent growth on a month-on-month (MoM) comparison from March 2025 to April 2025. 'Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-April 2025 were 575.13 lakhs as against 523.46 lakhs during the corresponding period of the previous year thereby registering an annual growth of 9.87% and monthly growth of 8.45%,' said DGCA in its monthly traffic data release. The data also showed that the overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for April 2025 was at 0.64 per cent, with Akasa Air, Air India Group, and IndiGo at the lowest level.

Home Minister assures justice to displaced families through R&R package
Anakapalli: Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha informed that as part of the Relief and Rehabilitation (R&R) package, a layout with all facilities is being facilitated for displaced families who gave lands to set up a bulk drug park and an AM/NS Steel Plant in the district. Holding a meeting with leaders of DL Puram, Rajayyapeta, Buchi Rajupeta, Chandanada, and Vempadu villages of Nakkapalli mandal here on Saturday, the Home Minister mentioned that the district is very conducive to industrial development with its wide coastline and national highway connectivity. The Home Minister said that a bulk drug park and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel industry will be established in the district. Anitha stated that proposals are being made to set up a toy park in the district, which will provide employment to 25,000 women. Giving importance to the displaced families, the Home Minister said that a layout with all amenities will be set up in an area of 151 acres at Bodhigalam village. She informed that each family is being provided with five cents of land and Rs.9 lakh for construction of a house. The Home Minister said that a total of Rs.693 crore was allotted as an R&R package and Rs.209 crore will be spent on setting up the infrastructure in the layout. Further, Anitha mentioned that facilities like school, Anganwadi centre, community hall, playground will form a part of the layout. It has been identified that there are 289 educated youth in the displaced villages, and they will be given skill development training by spending Rs.30,000 on each youth to get employment. She appealed to the people to cooperate in the government's vision to develop the district and resolve problems in a harmonious manner. The Sarpanches and leaders of the displaced villages brought their issues to the notice of District Collector Vijaya Krishnan and officials of the APIIC and revenue department. Responding to them, the Minister assured them that steps will be taken to resolve them at the earliest. At Uddandapuram village in Payakaraopeta constituency, the Home Minister distributed pensions to the beneficiaries. Visiting one of the residents' houses Govind, the Home Minister made tea and served it to his family members. Later, she inaugurated the second phase of the free gas cylinder distribution programme.
