Teacher fired for reading slur aloud in popular classroom book

A teacher in Washington state said he was recently fired for reading his class a passage from To Kill a Mockingbird without censoring the n-word.
Matthew Mastronardi, a Spanish teacher at West Valley High School in Spokane, was filmed reading out loud a section of the 1960 Harper Lee novel about racism and injustice in the Jim Crow-era Deep South.
The Spanish teacher said in a lengthy X post Wednesday that he only spoke the slur — which is used repeatedly in the classic work — as a 'teachable moment about context and literary honesty in reading' when he heard students saying they felt they 'must 'skip over the n-word'.'
'I was astonished and expressed disagreement, saying, 'That's silly; it undermines the book's historical context and disrespects the author's intent to use accurate language',' Mastronardi said.
'A girl asked me in front of the class, 'Would you read the word?' I replied, 'Yes, I would read every word'.'
Unaware that he was being recorded, Mastronardi — who admitted being 'nervous but committed' — said he then chose to read out the passage in front of the 30 students as a 'teachable moment.'
Within days, the teacher said he was slapped with a verbal warning from the principal before later being told he could either resign or face not having his contract renewed.
After refusing to quit, Mastronardi was served a non-renewal notice, he said.
The school repeatedly stated the decision wasn't solely down to the book saga — but officials apparently refused to provide other reasons, he claimed.
'There are no parent complaints, no documented disciplinary actions and I've passed every teaching evaluation,' he said.
Mastronardi said he now has one last chance to appeal at a school board meeting on June 25.
The iconic novel about racism and injustice in the Jim Crow-era Deep South tells the story of a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman.
The acclaimed novel, which is told through the eyes of a young white girl, uses the slur dozens of times.
The Post reached out to West Valley High School about Mastronardi's firing but didn't hear back immediately.

Diddy trial stunned by shock appearance of Kanye West

Kanye West made a surprise appearance at Sean 'Diddy' Combs' sex-trafficking trial Friday morning, entering the courtroom with one of Combs' sons. When West - who goes by Ye Ye - came to the courthouse around 11.10am, screams could be heard from bystanders, who shouted questions at him and recorded with their phones. West - wearing all white denim pants and jacket and black sunglasses - was asked, 'Are you here to support Combs?' 'Yes,' the fellow rapper responded. He did not respond to questions about whether he's been following the trial, which has been running for five weeks. He was met by Combs' son Christian 'King' Combs, who walked with the rapper inside. Once West was cleared through the courthouse security, he got in an elevator and went to the 23rd floor to watch the trial on a television screen inside a less-used secondary overflow room. Two overflow courtrooms have been available throughout trial so the public can still view the trial in case the main courtroom reaches capacity. The main courtroom, however, was not full Friday. West briefly observed inside the room, before other reporters caught wind of his surprise visit, apparently prompting him to leave. West spent about 40 minutes total inside the courthouse before leaving with Combs' son and someone who appeared to be security. West's wife, Bianca Censori, was not in attendance or seen at the courthouse. West didn't answer questions as he got into a black car and drove away. A day earlier, one of Diddy's alleged victims, former gal pal 'Jane,' gave shocking testimony about an unnamed, world-famous rap 'icon' whom she said was into a 'similar' sex-crazed, 'freak-off' lifestyle as the Bad Boy Records founder. West didn't respond to reporters' questions about whether he was the 'iconic' rapper described on Thursday. One of Sean 'Diddy' Combs' alleged victims and his one-time gal pal 'Jane' testified that she attended a January 2024 Las Vegas party hosted by a famous rapper who was throwing a birthday party for his girlfriend. Jane said she was flown on the rapper's private plane to Sin City, where a group of attendees went to a play, then to a birthday dinner, before going to a strip club and capping the night off with an afterparty in a hotel room. Jane said at the afterparty she saw an escort named Antoine having sex with a woman as the rapper, his girlfriend and others watched. Jane said she and Diddy had hired Antoine several times to join in 'freak-offs' with them. And when she saw Antoine at the party, he told her he travelled around with the mystery rapper and his girlfriend. Jane also said she recommended to the rapper another escort she and Combs hired because, similar to the 'I'll Be Missing You' rhymer, the mystery rapper was into a 'similar' sex-crazed 'lifestyle.' Jane said Combs was upset with her when he found out she went to the rapper's party and subsequent 'freak-off'. Diddy, 55, is accused of using his fame, fortune and many businesses to run a decade-long scheme in which he controlled and manipulated his longtime girlfriend, R&B singer Cassie Ventura, 38, and others including Jane using violence and threats, forcing them into 'freak-off' sex marathons that went on for days. The rapper has pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution. He faces life in prison if convicted.

Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown facing attempted murder charge in Miami

Controversial former NFL star Antonio Brown is a wanted man. Brown, 36, is being sought for arrest by police in Miami-Dade County on an attempted murder charge related to a shooting that happened outside a celebrity boxing event last month, the Washington Post reported on Friday (AEST). A judge signed the warrant on Wednesday and it listed a charge of attempted murder with a firearm, according to the New York Post. The Miami-Dade state attorney's office did not immediately respond to The Post's request for comment. The Post attempted to reach out to an email address listed on Brown's social media account and did not immediately hear back. The warrant called for Brown to post a US$10,000 ($15,400) bond and be placed under house arrest pending a trial, according to the report. The incident occurred just after midnight on May 16 in the Little Haiti neighbourhood of Miami and Brown initially was detained by police and released hours later. Brown claimed at the time he had been jumped in an attempted robbery outside a Brand Risk boxing event hosted by streamer Adin Ross. Footage posted on social media detailed the chaotic scene as Brown appeared to be engaged in a fight with several men before falling. The footage later showed him kicking a man on the ground before it cut to sounds of what people said were shots being fired. Another video showed Brown in handcuffs being led away by police, but he later was released. According to the warrant, bystanders in the parking lot told police Brown was the shooter, though no weapon was found on the ex-football player when they patted him down. A pair of spent shell casings and an empty gun holster were found by police, the warrant stated. Detectives with Miami police later obtained video that showed Brown punching another man, which kicked off the fracas. It later appeared to show him taking the gun of a security officer before moving toward the person Brown had punched, WaPo reported the warrant stating. Mobile phone video recorded two gun shots occurring when Brown approached the victim and showed him ducking, while the warrant also stated the victim told police Brown 'began to run toward him with a firearm' after the initial fight was stopped. The person identified Brown on surveillance footage and told investigators he had known him since 2022, according to the report. Brown played 12 years in the NFL, nine of which were spent with the Steelers, with stints with the Patriots and Buccaneers at the tail end of his career. The wide receiver — who was released by the Bucs at the end of the 2021-22 season after ripping off his pads and jersey on the sideline during a game against the Jets — has been a lightning rod of controversy since he ended his playing career in 2021 with bizarre posts on his social media along with a slew of legal issues that included allegedly exposing himself to a woman in a hotel in Dubai. He also faced a battery charge in 2022 related to a domestic incident. In February, he posted an alleged half-naked photo of Keyshia Cole on his X account.

Judge declares mistrial on one of three Harvey Weinstein rape charges

The mistrial ruling came one day after the jury convicted Weinstein on a separate sex abuse charge. It acquitted him on a second charge. Weinstein, once one of the most powerful people in Hollywood, faced a retrial that began on 23 April after a New York State appeals court overturned his 2020 conviction last year. He was accused by prosecutors of raping an aspiring and assaulting two other women. Weinstein pleaded not guilty and has denied assaulting anyone or having non-consensual sex.
