Bayern chief slams Canada Soccer again over Davies injury - World
Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen doubled down on his criticism of Canada Soccer on Saturday, saying their handling of Alphonso Davies' injury was "astonishing".
The German giants had threatened legal action after Davies returned from the international break with a torn anterior cruciate ligament this week.
Canada Soccer initially gave the 24-year-old the all-clear after he went off injured in his side's 2-1 CONCACAF Nations League play-off win over the USA in California.
But an examination in Munich revealed he had torn his ACL, ruling him out for at least six months and prompting Dreesen to accuse the Canadian federation of "gross negligence" in an interview with tabloid Bild.
Speaking to reporters after Bayern's 3-2 win over St. Pauli on Saturday, Dreesen said Bayern were in touch with Canada Soccer and would write to them next week demanding an explanation.
"It can't be that you put a player on a flight without a bandage on his knee and not notice that he has torn his ACL," said Dreesen.
"It can't be that you don't send a scan, when Los Angeles has, I think, the highest density of MRT facilities per capita of anywhere in North America. I find that astonishing," he added.
In a statement to The Athletic on Friday, Canada Soccer spokesman Paulo Senra defended the federation's handling of the injury.
"Medical documentation confirms that proper care protocols were followed, and communication records show that our medical staff provided updates to Bayern Munich throughout the entire tournament," he said.
Yet Dreesen appeared to dismiss this on Saturday.
"They told us he had got a kick in the sixth minute. But I could see that much on TV, that wasn't very surprising information," he said.
The Bayern CEO added that the club were considering their next steps.
"What we do next depends on the answers we get to our questions," he said.
Davies is part of a wider wave of injuries which has ravaged Bayern's defence in recent weeks.
Manuel Neuer is still yet to return after tearing his calf while celebrating in a Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen last month.
Bayern have also lost centre-back Dayot Upamecano to a leg injury, while fellow defender Hiroki Ito had to leave the pitch during Saturday's win.

Ahly's returning star winger Mahmoud 'Trezeguet' Hassan says he didn't hesitate to accept the offer to rejoin the Cairo giants, insisting that his return is to secure more achievements, not only playing at the anticipated Club World Cup. In late January, Ahly announced the signing of their former player Trezeguet from Turkish side Trabzonspor on a five-year deal starting this summer. "There weren't previous negotiations to join Ahly. I am a fan of the club before being a player. I had my own ambitions to play abroad, and I already did what I wanted, but once I received a call from Ahly President Mahmoud El-Khatib telling me the club needed me, everything was over immediately," Trezeguet told ON Sport TV channel on Saturday. "Firstly, Trabzonspor asked for a huge amount for the transfer, but I said I would play for Ahly or wouldn't play football again," he added. The 30-year-old returned to his boyhood club this summer after a decade-long spell abroad that included stints with Anderlecht, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa, Trabzonspor, İstanbul Başakşehir, and Qatar's Al-Rayyan, where he spent the last season on loan. Returning to the Egyptian league wasn't a choice for Trezeguet at the time being, as he had already received lucrative offers from other Egyptian clubs, but he refused, preferring to join the Reds again. "I chose to rejoin Ahly despite receiving offers with triple my current salary. My return wasn't only for the Club World Cup, as the contract runs for five years. I didn't want to return to Ahly at the age of retirement, but to achieve more goals here," the Egyptian international explained. The first edition of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, which will kick off on 14 June, will be the first test for Trezeguet with Ahly, and according to him, the players will do their best to please the fans. The African giants, drawn in Group A alongside Palmeiras (Brazil), FC Porto (Portugal), and Inter Miami (USA), kick off the tournament against the American side on Sunday, 15 June. "I say to our fans, you can dream of winning all tournaments, even the Club World Cup. Ahly taught us to dream. We know that the mission will be difficult, but the players have the quality and determination and will do their best," he concluded. Playing the first match of their qualifying campaign, Italy were stunned after a ruthless first-half performance by Norway, who put three past the visitors thanks to Alexander Sorloth, Antonio Nusa and Erling Haaland. Italy sit fourth in Group I, while Norway lead the group with nine points from three matches. Estonia, Moldova and Israel are also in Group I. "I have no explanation at the moment.
