Iraq Receives First Two French Caracal Helicopters

French firm Airbus has delivered the first two Caracal military helicopters to Iraq under a defence contract signed between the two countries. The Iraqi Ministry of Defence confirmed receipt of the aircraft on Wednesday, 30 April 2025.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Defence Minister Thabet Muhammad Saeed Al-Abbasi highlighted the strength of the partnership between Iraq and France, stating that the helicopters will bolster Army Aviation Command's capabilities. Additional units will be delivered in phases as production is completed.
The Caracal helicopters-renowned for their versatility in combat and all-weather conditions-are expected to enter operational service in June, coinciding with the anniversary of the Army Aviation Command's founding.
Minister Al-Abbasi also took part in a test flight operated by Iraqi pilots and praised their swift adaptation and readiness to integrate the advanced aircraft into the Iraqi Armed Forces.
The Defence Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to modernising Iraq's military arsenal through continued cooperation with international partners.

Erbil has dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, calling the move 'unconstitutional, unlawful, and a form of collective punishment' that targets ordinary citizens. In response, representatives of civil society organizations in the Kurdish capital submitted a letter to the United Nations on Thursday, appealing for international intervention to help lift what they described as a financial siege. Also on Thursday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani reaffirmed the KRG's commitment to defending the rights of the Kurdish people through all legal and constitutional avenues.

$21m Upgrade of Aqrah-Qandil Road

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has begun work on expanding and upgrading the 30-kilometre road Aqrah [Akre] to Qandil into a dual-lane highway at a cost exceeding 28 billion Iraqi dinars [$21 million]. The project, expected to be completed within two years, links the sub-districts of Bajil and Dinarta, passing through 25 villages. According to a statement from the KRG, it is seen as a key infrastructure initiative to boost local commerce and enhance regional connectivity. Thousands of jobs have been created through this project, which is being carried out by local labour. Officials say it will significantly support trade and economic activity in the area. Dr Makiya highlighted the economic benefits of hydrogen production, including job creation and sustainable energy supply, noting that such projects could significantly contribute to Iraq's energy security and economic growth. The meeting also addressed Iraq's future plans in renewable energy and biofuels, while acknowledging the challenges posed by the country's heavy reliance on oil and the urgent need to shift towards alternative sources. Committee members and ministry representatives expressed their support for continued cooperation, citing the need to apply Iraq's Investment Law effectively and offer incentives that protect investors and attract capital into the clean energy sector.
