"Excellent Person": Family Mourns Mexican Naval Cadet Killed In New York Bridge Crash

NDTV21-05-2025

The father of one of two Mexican cadets killed when a naval sailing ship crashed into New York's Brooklyn Bridge paid tribute to his daughter as a "wonderful" person Tuesday.
Dozens of friends and relatives attended a funeral for 20-year-old America Yamileth Sanchez, who died along with Adal Jair Maldonado, 23.
Around 20 other crew members were injured when the training ship, which visits foreign ports on goodwill voyages, crashed into the iconic New York bridge on Saturday, snapping the masts.
Sanchez's coffin was received with flowers, candles and tears at her home in Xalapa in the eastern state of Veracruz after a procession through the city.
Mourners shouted the name of the young cadet, who was pictured in her navy uniform.
"She is an example for future generations to come -- an excellent person, a wonderful human being," her father Herminio Cosme Sanchez said.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum offered her "love and solidarity" to the family.
Numerous sailors were positioned among the Cuauhtemoc ship's rigging at the time of the crash.
It had begun a seven-month voyage in April from its base in the Pacific coastal city of Acapulco.
The vessel had been departing New York at the time of the accident with flags fluttering from its rigging and an enormous Mexican flag waving off its stern.
The US National Transportation Safety Board said Monday that a preliminary report into the collision was expected within 30 days.

China slams Macron for Taiwan remarks, opposes Nato role in Asia-Pacific

China on Wednesday said it will firmly oppose any attempts by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) to expand into the Asia-Pacific and sharply criticised French President Emmanuel Macron for equating the Ukraine and Taiwan conflicts and for calling on Asian countries to align with Europe. "We firmly oppose relevant remarks. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory... The Taiwan question and the Ukraine crisis are not comparable at all,' said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian at a media briefing, responding to a question about Macron's speech at the recent Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. Macron urged Asian countries to build a new alliance with Europe to avoid becoming "collateral damage" in the power struggle between the United States and China. His remarks drew reactions from both Washington and Beijing. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who also attended the event, in a separate address called on the US' Indo-Pacific allies to increase their defence spending as a share of GDP to counter China. China reiterates Taiwan stance, downplays South China Sea tensions China has previously clashed with the Philippines over claims in the South China Sea. Asserting that Taiwan is an inalienable part of its territory, Lin said China strongly opposes any statements or actions that misrepresent or distort the nature of the Taiwan issue. On the South China Sea conflict, Lin maintained that the situation in the region remains generally stable. China claims most of the area in the South China Sea, while the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan have counterclaims. 'There is no problem with the freedom of navigation and overflight that countries enjoy in accordance with the law in the South China Sea,' Lin said. Nato warned against expansion in Asia-Pacific 'As a regional defensive organisation, Nato has no right to reach beyond its geographical scope and mandate defined by its treaty,' Lin added. 'China firmly opposes Nato's attempt to advance eastward into the Asia-Pacific, stir up tensions and create confrontation in the region, and sabotage regional and even global peace and stability. Asia-Pacific countries do not welcome Nato in the Asia-Pacific, and the region certainly does not need an Asia-Pacific Nato,' he said.

Police Station Turned Into Restaurant: This Meghalaya Cafe Lets You Dine Inside A 'Jail'

Ever wondered what it feels like to dine inside a jail? Do not worry - the food is nothing like prison meals, but the ambience might surprise you. While jail-themed restaurants exist in various cities, this one stands out. A new cafe has opened in Sohra (Cherrapunjee), Meghalaya, inside a building that once functioned as a real police station. Established in 1885, it is the oldest of its kind in the state and was known as a "dreaded detention centre" during colonial times, according to PTI. Now, it has been transformed into a heritage cafe called "Sohra 1885", complete with a refurbished lock-up area offering a unique 'jail dining' experience. The initiative has been led by the Meghalaya Police. The concept was proposed by Vivek Syiem, the current Superintendent of Police in East Khasi Hills. He had first pitched the idea when he was serving as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the area. "I always wanted to do something with the heritage police station. There are not many such buildings left in the state that have so much history," he told PTI. Profits from the cafe will reportedly go towards police welfare. The cafe is a collaboration with Nafi Nongrum, a young entrepreneur. She took on the restoration using several British-era artefacts from the original police station, as per PTI. The walls have been preserved in their original form, while the rest of the structure has been upgraded for comfort and safety. "Even the fireplace has been renovated to its old glory. The floors have been left to their original state as they are still in very good condition," Syiem said. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lily Sawian (@ Batskhem Thabah, a customer at the cafe, said, "We really enjoyed our time in the lockup, which has been converted into a dining area." The cafe also offers additional seating, accommodating up to 100 guests in total. The multi-cuisine menu includes comfort food like pizza, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, and momos, along with popular dishes from Mexican, Indo-Chinese, South Indian, and North Indian cuisines.
