I spent winter trying not to look out of the window, fearing that most of the plants I'd optimistically bought last summer wouldn't make it. So it's a wonderful feeling to have the garden open up again – and many of you seem to agree. We were taken aback by the popularity of our pieces on how to get your garden ready for summer and the best secateurs to help you with the spring tidy.
It's also time to dust the cobwebs off your summer wardrobe, and perhaps breathe new life into it with a few fresh items, whether that's a 'sexy spring sweater', some viral barrel-leg trousers or an £8 mascara. (Or, if you prefer to shop secondhand, read our recent guide to buying vintage clothing.)
L'Oréal Paradise Big Deal volumising mascara
£8 at Amazon
Former beauty editor and self-proclaimed mascara obsessive Sabine Wiesel has been on a lifelong hunt for the best mascaras. After retesting 25 of her favourites and five of the latest launches, she pulled together her ultimate edit for the Filter. 'Even those who consider themselves low-maintenance usually own a mascara,' she says. 'It seems no one is immune to how effortlessly eye-framing a few coats can be.' That's certainly true of Filter readers: Sabine's bargain pick has been one of the fastest-selling products we've ever recommended, after she 'fell for this mascara at first swipe'.
Spear & Jackson Razorsharp Advantage bypass secateurs
£9.95 at Amazon
'Secateurs are the single most valued tool in the gardener's trug, an implement as personally prized as the bricklayer's trowel,' says Matt Collins, head gardener at London's Garden Museum, in our roundup of the best secateurs. They're particularly important in spring, 'the time for cutting back perennials and grasses in advance of new growth'. These Spear & Jackson secateurs are 'the most simply designed and hard-working budget secateurs I've had the pleasure of trying', says Matt – and they've also been the most popular with our bargain-loving readers.
Niwaki hori hori knife
£32.95 at Sarah Raven
Ask any professional gardener about their favourite tool and you'll hear repeatedly about the hori hori knife. Once again, gardening experts chose the hori hori as one of their favourite tools for getting your garden summer-ready: 'It's perfect for digging, cutting, weeding and planting, so you can get loads done even on a quick stroll or lunch break,' said garden designer Lulu Roper-Caldbeck.
Boden Enid embroidered jumper
£112 at John Lewis
'I have so much love for a sexy jumper,' says Jess Cartner-Morley in her April style essentials. 'Not easy to find, which is why 'sexy jumper' sounds a bit like an oxymoron,' she adds, but perfect for cooler evenings where you want a special top that doesn't give you goose bumps. 'I'd wear this out for dinner with a black cami underneath.'
Biona organic coconut milk
£11.95 for 6 x 400ml at Amazon
'Buying a good-quality [coconut milk] – as opposed to one bolstered with sweeteners, emulsifiers and stabilisers – often makes the difference between a great dish and a bad one,' said restaurateur Ravinder Bhogal in her coconut milk taste test. So, of course, our readers' favourite was 'the Ferrari of coconut milks' from Biona, with 50% organic coconut and water the only ingredients.
Jersey trousers
£34.90 at Uniqlo
First chosen by Jess Cartner-Morley as a way to look posh on a budget, these viral Uniqlo barrel-leg trousers were the most popular pick in our guide to women's spring wardrobe essentials. We're not surprised, as they're so immensely wearable: both 'casual enough for every day and smart enough for the office'.

Anker Nano
£29.99 at Anker
'Quick, convenient and small enough to carry in a trouser pocket,' this teeny 102g power bank impressed our reviewer Pete Wise in his test of the best power banks. 'No other power bank strikes the same balance between impressive charging speed and portability,' he says. 'It's the perfect fallback for the person whose phone never quite manages to stay powered through the day.' Its 5,000mAh capacity should be enough to give most phones a good top-up.
Altruist sunscreen SPF50
£27.95 for 1 litre at Amazon
'Without sunscreen, every anti-ageing skincare product is pointless,' says Sali Hughes in her ultimate guide to anti-ageing. This litre bottle from dermatologist-founded Altruist may seem expensive, but it 'represents, millilitre for millilitre, some of the best value high-quality, broad-spectrum sunscreen on the market'.
Glaze Clear conditioning gloss
£15.99 at Amazon
Hayley Spencer asked the experts which beauty treatments are safe (and easy) to DIY at home – and 'glass hair' was deemed achievable (as long as there's no colour in it). 'There's nothing like that salon-fresh feeling of bouncy, shiny locks that have just been dyed,' she says. 'After about a month, though, you'll likely find that your hair looks a tad lacklustre. It's probably because the gloss treatment, which coats the hair cuticles and adds nourishment and shine, has worn off.' Glaze's Clear conditioning gloss can be used on dry hair and takes just 10 minutes to develop, giving your hair that 'glass' shine at home.
Rattantree shock-absorbing treadmill
£142.49 at Debenhams
Obviously no substitute for a walk outside in nature, but under-desk treadmills have become increasingly popular as a way to boost your daily steps while stuck at your desk. This Rattantree model is particularly accessible, at £142.49: 'It's a mega-value, fairly generic option that hails from China,' says fitness fanatic Leon Poultney in our roundup of the best walking pads. 'It's no surprise that it doesn't offer all the bells and whistles of its pricier rivals. The build quality isn't fantastic, but it is lightweight, an absolute doddle to use and covers the basics required by most working walkers.'
Rainbow bud vase
From £12.50 at Etsy
A reader favourite from our roundup of colourful pick-me-ups to elevate your everyday, this bright and cheerful vase is designed to hold a single stem, or at most a small clutch of them. It's an easy way to liven up your home on a budget. This one 'turns the splatterware trend all the way up to 11', according to fashion writer Ellie Violet Bramley.

Amazon's 'light as a cloud' sandals that are 'better than Birkenstocks' for under £22
Comfy footwear is 'in' for summer 2025 and these sliders will do just the job. Finding the right sandals for summer can be difficult. While it's important that they be comfortable, we also want them to be a little bit trendy. For the shoppers still on the hunt for a pair that can be considered fashionable, then the hunt is over, as these KuaiLu Womens Slides on Amazon are currently the subject of glowing reviews from thousands of shoppers. Currently retailing at as low as £21.84, down from £26.99, they pose a budget-friendly alternative to some other major brands that also provide orthotic designs for those who struggle with pain related foot issues. Offering a "lightweight" and "soft" design, these sliders are easy to wear for long periods at a time. With their double adjustable straps, they are said to hug every foot type and offer a perfect fit for everyone. The main reason shoppers love them is because of the ergonomic design that offers an orthotic footbed and arch support to provide a "supportive" fit. Meanwhile, there is also a deep heel cup that provides extra support when standing and walking. As of writing, Amazon stocks these sliders in sizes three to nine, with half-sizes included, in 15 different colours that include beige, tan, black, fuchsia and dark blue. For those who do suffer from any issues such as plantar fasciitis, then Skechers remains a go-to brand, and we have spotted the brand's On The Go Vacay Womens Flip Flops for just £27.99 over at Sports Direct. Shoppers can also get a little bit of extra cushioning and support with these Vionic Unisex Rejuvenate Recovery Arch Support Sandals that offer a chunkier design for £85 at Next. Meanwhile, shoppers looking to make a bit of a saving, then Amazon's KuaiLu Sliders offers a budget-friendly pair that have earned a four star rating from those who say they "fit like a glove" and are also "better" than major brand Birkenstocks. One five-star review read: "These fit like a glove and are as light as a cloud! I have very sensitive feet and I am able to wear these all day with no pain in my feet or my back. Love how you can adjust the top strap to keep my feet snug in the sandal. I like them better than my Birkenstocks! Highly highly recommend!" Fashion deal of the week In need of new trainers, but don't want to pay Skechers prices. Then these STQ Women's Slip-On Trainers are said to be "much better" than the famed brand. Even better, they are currently priced from just £30.99 on Amazon. With their slip-on style design and ultra-breathable mesh material, these trainers are said to be a fuss-free option for anyone who spends long periods of time on their feet, alongside anyone who suffers from foot pain issues such as plantar fasciitis. The flexible knitted material features an elastic cuff, making them easy to pop on and take off, while the wide fit fabric has been designed to make it feel like you are wearing nothing on your feet. Crafted with over 1,000 ventilation holes, they ensure that feet don't get to sweaty during wear, while the memory foam insole provides good arch support, making it feel "like walking on air". Available to buy in sizes three through to eight, shoppers can select from eight colours including black, grey and pink. However, it's worth noting that the £30.99 price-tag is available on the black colourway. With the STQ Trainers posing the cheapest price-tag, shoppers might be happy to hear that they have earned a 4.4 rating based on over 5,000 Amazon reviews that suggest they are "light as a feather" and "really comfortable". One delighted shopper said: "Super lightweight, comfortable and a fab colour pink. Much better all round than the Skechers I bought at four times the price! Your feet will love these." A similar review read: "I was getting tired of my Birkenstocks wanted a pair of cute summer sandals, that were supportive and affordable. These are perfect! Comfortable slip ons that are like an elevated slide which arch support and style!" Someone else praising the sliders wrote: "Cute and the most comfortable sandals I have ever worn. They stay on my feet and I'm never worries that they will slip off. I also have had feet pain and they help ease any pain after a long day on my feet." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! A few shoppers have found the design to be a little on the narrower side, which might be worth taking into consideration if you usually purchase a wide-fit. One review with this issue read: "Very light material with foam bottom. I have wide feet and these were extremely narrow. Did not work for me but if you have average or narrow feet these would be ok. Little pricey for the type of quality and material in my opinion." While someone else happy with their purchase added: "These are great sliders a must for the holidays if u don't like the normal toe post sliders . These are like slippers on." 'I'm a gardening dad, here's what I'd like for Father's Day 2025'
With Father's Day fast approaching, now is the ideal time to start hunting for gifts Father's Day is just around the corner and, if you're like me, you'll no doubt be scratching around at the last minute for inspiration on what to buy your dad. For some reason, they're notoriously difficult to buy for. Those who like gardening, a gift themed around that topic can often be a solid bet, especially with the weather set to perk up. With just days to go, I've picked out four gifts that I'd personally be delighted with as someone who enjoys taking care of their outdoor space. They range in both price and theme, from BBQs to Crocs, these are some of the gifts I'd love. Drum BBQ Few things match the smell of a smoking BBQ on a sunny day. I had my first BBQ of the year recently and it was just as amazing as I remembered. That was just on a disposable BBQ though, and I'd love to upgrade my setup. This Argos Home Drum Charcoal BBQ is pretty affordable at £50 and comes with more than 9,000 customer reviews, with the vast majority very happy with the purchase. One said: "Brilliant for the money. Straightforward and easy to step up too which is a bonus." Another continued: "It's a durable BBQ with perfect size for family. The grill is made of black metal that's easy to wash! I love it!" Though one of the few lower scores did note: "I bought this late summer. By October it had rust marks all over it. The cover is great for being in a shed, but not outdoors." Lawn Spike Aerator Like lots of dads, I'm obsessed with my grass. Between a dog and a child, mine takes a bit of a beating, so keeping it in top shape is a constant task. It might sound boring, but fear not, we love it. One of the tools that helps with this is a Lawn Spike Aerator, which can be picked up from the likes of Amazon for £27.99. The boring reason for the tool is that grass roots need air, water and nutrients to grow thick, deep and strong. Naturally, soil often gets compacted and stifles the flow of the essentials that support thicker, healthier turf growth. That product has averaged 4.5 stars out of 5 to date, with one reviewer saying: "Perfect! All arrived without damage, extra bolts and some cute Bee garden gloves. As a first time home owner with a garden needing some TLC but a tight budget this is definitely worth the money!" However, one did note it's "perfect for a small front lawn but tiresome for a big lawn". Kink-free hosepipe My hosepipe is forever getting tangles and kinks and it's unbelievably frustrating. The design is simply awful, so I'd love one that doesn't have that problem. Enter the Flopro that claims to be "frustration free" thanks to a knitted design that stops those annoying kinks when you're trying to water the plants. Shoppers who've taken the plunge have said: "Nice hose at reasonable price. Fast delivery." Another went on: "Good quality hose, feels very durable and so far no kinking. I would purchase again but probably won't need to." However, one buyer did only give it a one-star rating, though didn't elaborate on what the issue was. It's priced at £39.99 on Amazon and is compatible with all brands of hose lock hose connectors. Crocs Last but not least, you can't go wrong with a pair of Crocs. I absolutely love mine, especially when it comes to gardening. They're just so easy to slip on and off when you're going in and out of the house, so you aren't dragging mud in. The classic clogs (my personal favourite design) range in price from £37.49 to £49.99, depending on the colour desired.

Frankie Bridge's silk eye mask is hailed the ‘best sleep mask ever' by shoppers
Frankie Bridge gave fans a glimpse at one of her must-have sleep items, and Amazon shoppers say her padded silk eye mask is 'super soft and very comfortable' When it comes to getting a good night's sleep, most of us will be willing to try anything if it means we can wake up feeling well rested and refreshed. For those who are light sleepers or sensitive to light, that can only mean one thing – an eye mask. However, you can forget everything you think you know about tight, uncomfortable and flimsy sleep masks, because Frankie Bridge's go-to pick is here to change the game. The presenter posted a snap of herself post-snooze wearing the Drowsy Silk Sleep Mask, and a quick scan of Amazon reviews proves it's a worthwhile investment. The highly-recommended eye mask is definitely an investment at £69, however it has a whole host of benefits that help improve not just the quality of your sleep, but your skin and hair, too. The Drowsy mask has thick, squishy padding that provides plenty of cushioning and comfort while you sleep. It has a fully adjustable blackout design that blocks out all light interference, making it ideal for everything from your usual bedtime routine to wearing while travelling. It fastens with velcro at the back to get the perfect fit, and the wide strap prevents rubbing and digging in, as well as eliminating those dreaded lines in your hair that other masks' elastic straps cause. If you prefer something with some stretch, Beauty Pie's Sleepeasy Luxury Mulberry Silk is £34 and has a silk-covered elasticated strap. Alternatively the £66 contoured Slip Sleep Mask also features a silk-covered elasticated strap, and has the added bonus of a contoured eye area that stops your lashes from rubbing or touching the material. Frankie's Drowsy Silk Sleep Mask, however, is made from 22 momme padded mulberry silk, which comes with plenty of benefits alongside making it soft and comfortable to wear. The silk helps prevent friction from your pillows in the night which can cause the appearance of deep set wrinkles and creases on your skin over time. Instead, the silk protects your delicate eye area from pulling and rubbing, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and preventing new ones from forming. It also helps reduce dark circles and fine lines. The silk of the Drowsy Sleep Mask can even stop your skin from drying out as rapidly as standard cotton or polyester options, keeping it moisturised and letting your overnight skincare products work better. There's a huge 14 different colour options to choose from, including Frankie's navy version, printed and embroidered versions, and bold colours like lilac and pink. Amazon shoppers are also big fans, with one saying its the: 'Best sleep mask I've used' before adding: 'I cannot sleep with any degree of light in the bedroom and have used various masks over the years. This mask, although really expensive, must be regarded as a necessary investment. This is the best mask that I've ever used. The adjustment at the back means that it will never feel too tight or loose and the design allows one to position the mask so there is no pressure on the back of your head if you sleep on your back. The mask is large enough that there is no light leakage no matter what position you sleep in. And then there is the comfort; the fabric and the filling are superb in this regard. I've never used such a wide mask before and it took me a couple of nights to adjust to that, but I now find it incredibly comfortable.' Another agreed: 'I hate masks but this one is amazing - super soft, very comfortable to wear. Does not get in the way of getting to sleep and stays on! highly recommended." Whilst someone else chimed in: 'This is amazing for travel.' Some did find some issues, though, with one reviewer writing: 'Is a nice mask to wear during winter time but very sweaty from spring to autumn.' Another said: 'Beautiful fabric and beautifully made. Its also surprisingly comfortable, I was concerned that I would feel a wide velcro band, but I don't notice it. However there is no travel pouch despite several photos showing one, I do find light sneaking under the nose slit which moves slightly whilst sleeping. It's also very expensive in comparison to other similar design masks. I need a bag to store when travelling so bearing in mind the high cost will purchase another similar brand next time.'
