Jordi Fernandez on Nets' offseason plans: 'You can only control what you can control, and right now that's what we know for sure'
The mantra the Nets have followed this season is 'getting one percent better each day'. For those interested in learning more about it, it's a concept highlighted in the book 'Atomic Habits' by James Clear.
By that logic, Jordi Fernandez should've gotten at least 79% better this season, given the Nets just completed their 79th regular-season game Tuesday night, a 119-114 defeat of the New Orleans Pelicans at Barclays Center.

It's tough for the first-year head coach to calculate how much he's grown since being hired last summer. He understands perfection is an unrealistic expectation, and there have been plenty of ups and downs sprinkled throughout this 26-53 campaign. But even through the struggles, his fellow coaches and Brooklyn's front office continue to practice grace. And organizational support matters, especially in the midst of a rebuild.
'That's what I care about most,' Fernandez said. 'And I believe I'm a different coach than I was Day 1 because I've learned every single day, and I believe all these steps will just make me better, so I'm looking forward to continuing to grow through the summer and excited about what's coming.'
The Nets have an extremely important summer on the horizon. The NBA Draft lottery is on May 12 and the draft itself is on June 25. Unlike last year, Brooklyn owns its first-round pick in a loaded draft class. Its picks are currently projected to be No. 6 overall, No. 18, No. 26 and No. 27 — and it also owns a second-round pick.
'We're not going to know where the lottery is going to fall because that's part of the odds and so forth,' Fernandez said. 'So, you can only control what you can control, and right now that's what we know for sure.'

Whether all those picks are used remains to be seen, but Brooklyn's roster will look much different in 2025-26 either way. The team also has four restricted free agents in Ziaire Williams, Cam Thomas, Day'Ron Sharpe and Reece Beekman to decide on, as well as two unrestricted free agents in D'Angelo Russell and Trendon Watford.
Drafted rookies will need development. And whoever sticks around will have to find ways to perform better than they did in 2024-25.
'We'll structure a summer where the guys are going to do a great job developing and getting better,' Fernandez said. 'We're going to put in place everything they need to continue to work and get better. We have an important summer league with a lot of the guys who will likely get drafted. But the best thing is, we're in a very good situation, from flexibility to assets to the big, great market we have here. So, it's just getting one percent better each day.'
Until then, the Nets still have three regular-season games left against the Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Knicks. Brooklyn has sat its veterans down the stretch, which means young players fighting to prove they belong in the league — such as Beekman, Drew Timmie and Tyson Etienne — will continue to receive ample opportunities.

For them, there's still plenty to play for.
'I think the opportunities are extremely important, you still have a job to do,' Fernandez said. 'You have to have the right intentions and making mistakes, it's not what matters the most [nor] is it a bad thing as long as you have the right intentions. What we want to accomplish as a group, if you take the right shot and the shot doesn't go in, so be it.
'This is not the end of anything. This is not the end of the season. This is just the next game, the next game going into the most important summer of our lives, into a very important summer to train, to get better and to be able to play the next game. So, nothing stops here. Winning development, winning habits, everything continues for us and that's how we approach it.'

Ram to enter trucks in 2026 with possible future move to Cup for Dodge
BROOKLYN, Mich. — Dodge parent company Stellantis will enter NASCAR racing in 2026 with its Ram brand competing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with an eye toward going Cup racing in the years beyond. Whether that's 2027 or later — 2027 is possible but would be an aggressive timeline — remains to be seen as the announcement Sunday focused primarily on the truck, a much easier lift than going Cup racing. With all trucks in the series using an Ilmor engine and several common body elements, Ram just needed to design a nose, a hood, front fenders and a tail for its racing vehicle. Ram did not announce who will drive its trucks nor the teams that will field its trucks. Ram CEO Tim Kinuskis said he hopes to have somewhere between four and six trucks for the 2026 season opener at Daytona. "We're looking for a date to the prom right now [for trucks]," Kinuskis said. "So how am I going to get the Cup? That's going to depend on how I get to truck. So however we get to truck is going will obviously weigh heavily on do I have a path to Cup? "Our intention is not to do a one-hit wonder and go to truck and not to Cup. That's not our plan." Ram does not have cars so what brand of car — Dodge? Plymouth's possible rebirth? — is still to be determined although Dodge has a lengthy history in the sport and motorsports as a whole. "Ram is coming back to the truck series," Kinuskis said. "It has nothing to do with Dodge, despite the fact that everyone in the world calls it Dodge Ram. ... If we go back to Cup, which is our intention, Ram doesn't have a car, so obviously that would have to be Dodge coming back. "But I'm not making that announcement. I'm not saying Dodge is back. Don't put that headline. But when we get to that point, it wouldn't be Ram, obviously." There is speculation in the industry that GMS, which has competed in all three national series over the last decade and was eventually bought out by Jimmie Johnson in the rebranding to Legacy Motor Club, will be involved in building chassis and/or fielding trucks for Ram. Kinuskis promised a program that will elevate fan engagement, and YouTube star Cleetus McFarland, who has competed in some ARCA races, has been linked to the Ram program. Dodge had Cup teams from 2001-12 before exiting the sport on a high note with Brad Keselowski winning a Cup title at Team Penske. When Penske left for Ford, Dodge had trouble landing a premier team and opted to leave the sport. No new manufacturer has entered the sport since Toyota did so in 2004 in trucks and 2007 in Cup. Kinuskis also said when he returned to Ram earlier this year, his two goals were to reintroduce the Hemi engine and get into NASCAR, where 50 percent of its fan base own trucks. "It's always bothered me," Kinuskis said. "We've always been looking for a way to get back. It took us a long time to find the absolute right time." To re-enter Cup would take some engine development and significant body design, a process that would take at least 18 months, NASCAR Chief Racing Development Officer John Probst said. "The last time that engine ran was 2012 — the core components of the block, the head, the manifold, are all still relevant," Probst said. "Our existing engine builders develop their engines every year. There's been a gap there, so there'd be some development of that engine needed. "But from the basic building blocks they could start from that and do some catch-up development." Kinuskis wouldn't talk about a timeline Sunday for going to Cup racing. "Our full intention is to be back in Cup," Kinuskis said. "But right now we're on a path for Daytona next year with truck, with our eye on when we can be in Cup after that. TBD. "We're a fly with no net right now trying to get to Daytona. That's our focus right now." Keselowski, currently a driver and co-owner at RFK Racing, said the trucks are the right entry point for a manufacturer as it doesn't have to immediately get an engine available and because of the parity in the series. "[The truck series] is a great place for an OEM [original equipment manufacturer] to enter NASCAR and really kind of get that appetite going for the Cup Series," Keselowski said. "It's a big jump from the truck series to the Cup Series, but nonetheless it's a great entry point for OEMs, and hopefully they aren't the only one that will enter the truck series." Dallas Mavericks Make Big Cooper Flagg Decision Ahead of NBA Draft
Dallas Mavericks Make Big Cooper Flagg Decision Ahead of NBA Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. While the NBA Finals are currently commanding most of the spotlight, the 2025 NBA draft is quickly approaching, set to take place on June 25 in Brooklyn, New York. Advertisement This year's draft lottery delivered a dramatic twist, as the Dallas Mavericks—despite making the play-in tournament and holding just a 1.8% chance—miraculously landed the No. 1 overall pick. That surprise outcome has now put Dallas in prime position to select Duke phenom Cooper Flagg, widely considered the consensus No. 1 overall pick. A versatile two-way star, Flagg has the tools to impact every facet of the game and is viewed by many as a franchise-changing talent. Now, just weeks away from draft night, the Mavericks have reportedly made a major move toward that possibility. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Dallas is set to bring in Flagg for a pre-draft visit—a strong indication that selecting him first overall is a near certainty. Cooper Flagg has been widely projected as the No. 1 pick in this year's draft class since before he even stepped on the court at Duke—and remarkably, he managed to exceed the sky-high expectations placed on him. Advertisement In his lone season with the Blue Devils, Flagg captured both the Wooden Award and the Naismith Player of the Year honors. He was also named ACC Player of the Year and ACC Freshman of the Year, leading Duke in points (19.2), rebounds (7.5), assists (4.2), steals (1.4), and blocks (1.4)—a rare and dominant all-around showing. Former Duke star forward Cooper Flagg talks to the media during the 2025 NBA Draft CombineDavid Banks-Imagn Images Although Duke fell short in the Final Four, Flagg's transition from the college season to the NBA spotlight was swift. He was in attendance for the draft lottery and admitted he was surprised to see the Mavericks land the No. 1 overall pick. Still, he acknowledged the excitement of potentially joining a roster that includes fellow former Blue Devil Dereck Lively II and star guard Kyrie Irving. Advertisement 'I saw the teams just like everybody else, but I feel like it was kind of a crazy sequence of events,' Flagg said from the NBA Draft Combine. '... I was surprised like a lot of people.' He continued, "They got a lot of really good pieces, D-Live from Duke. That's pretty cool,' Flagg said. 'I think it'll be a really good opportunity.' WATCH: Ohio State fan Denny Hamlin throws up O-H after winning NASCAR race in Michigan
Denny Hamlin is an elite NASCAR driver and outspoken Ohio State Buckeyes fan. There are plenty of rumors on the internet and comments in media about why and how his Buckeye fandom started, but it got far more intense this season. After winning his first race of the year this seaon back in March, he waved an "11 Against the World" flag (his car is No.11). Hamlin certainly outdid himself this race, though. He made a late pass for the lead and held on to win his third race of the season (and 57th overall career win) at Michigan International Speedway, in Brooklyn, MI (about 40 miles from the Ohio border). He then threw up an O-H to the stands twice after getting out of his car to celebrate the win. Fans were still cheering, but that moment got some predictable boos. All in all, NASCAR fans still love him, but Buckeye fans will probably love him even more for now. This is not the first time Hamlin has good-naturedly angered crowds when he travels to races. He recently threw a "Horns Down" sign before his race in Michigan a month ago. He finished that race 38th.
