Cleary warns NSW's halves about to hit new highs

Nathan Cleary has declared his combination with Mitch Moses can go to another level in Perth, with NSW to benefit from a largely unchanged squad.
Coach Laurie Daley will announce his team for State of Origin II on Monday night, with Stefano Utoikamanu set to replace the injured Mitch Barnett.
Barring injuries in Monday afternoon's Canterbury-Parramatta clash, the Blues will otherwise remain unchanged with the only question mark being the reserves.
And at a time where Queensland's halves are undergoing monumental changes with Daly Cherry-Evans axed, Cleary believes NSW's will only get better.
The Penrith No.7's combination with Moses was the major talking point ahead of Origin I, with both naturally dominant halfbacks in the NRL.
It paid off, with Moses fitting into the supporting role and No.6 jersey unlocking his running game as planned in the 18-6 win.
The duo hardly got in each other's way, linked up in the lead up to one NSW try and Cleary also played a role in each of the Blues' other three four-pointers.
NSW have only had one other all-halfback pairing this century, with Trent Hodkinson and Mitchell Pearce joining forces in the 2015 series loss.
Hodkinson spoke last month about how it became easier for the pair after they'd played one game together.
And Cleary believes it would be the same for he and Moses, as NSW hunt a second straight series win with victory at Optus Stadium next Wednesday night.

"The way Mitch and I combined was good, but I think even that, we can go to another level," Cleary said.
"I'm looking forward to getting to camp with them again and building that.
"It's probably just a bit of a feel thing (where we can be better). Especially when we're under fatigue and in the tough moments of the game.
"But still I thought just generally connecting off three training sessions really was pretty good."
Cleary said he expected to regain the kicking duties after handing over to Zac Lomax after three straight missed conversion attempts in Brisbane.
He also believed his own game would benefit after not playing Origin since game one 2023 due to injury.
"It is a weird dynamic (with Origin), where once game three is done, it's almost like another year until you play game one again," Cleary said.
"I think that's why with Origins series, you build into them.
"Particularly for me, coming back after two years out, I got to build those combinations in the first camp.
"But I think I can elevate those even more in this second camp."
Utoikamanu will win Barnett's prop spot ahead of Keaon Koloamatangi, with the Blues largely able to keep their squad together now for two series.
"It helps," second-rower Liam Martin said.
"You can hit the ground running when you're getting into training. You know each other.
"That was the goal last year to build something, start fresh and try and build a legacy of the Blues. It's a group where everyone wants to buy in.
"Everyone is chasing the same goal. Everyone's just got that team-first mentality, and it's pretty special to be a part of."
EXPECTED NSW TEAM FOR STATE OF ORIGIN II:
Dylan Edwards, Brian To'o, Latrell Mitchell, Stephen Crichton, Zac Lomax, Mitch Moses, Nathan Cleary, Stefano Utoikamanu, Reece Robson, Payne Haas, Liam Martin, Angus Crichton, Isaah Yeo (capt). Bench: Connor Watson, Spencer Leniu, Hudson Young, Max King.

Pies hold on in King's Birthday thriller against Dees

Collingwood held on for a tense one-point win over Melbourne in an epic finish to their King's Birthday blockbuster as Demons stars Max Gawn and Steven May clashed on the final siren. The Magpies led by 20 points in the third quarter but fell behind early in the last term, before Dan McStay kicked the final goal of an 11.6 (72) to 10.11 (71) victory at the MCG. Both sides had further chances to score but Gawn's snap at a boundary throw-in narrowly missed and a set shot by Koltyn Tholstrup fell short as the Demons fell agonisingly short. Melbourne captain Gawn's shanked kick from the back pocket with 30 seconds left fell in the lap of Collingwood's Will Hoskin-Elliott, and the Pies iced the game. Gawn and May were then involved in a heated conversation on the siren, with the captain pushing his teammate away. Almost a year to the day since last season's injury nightmare, Demons star Christian Petracca returned to the same stage with 26 disposals and five clearances. But it was some of Collingwood's stars who shone brightest as the ladder leaders made it five wins on the bounce and improved their record to 11-2 ahead of a mid-season bye. Jeremy Howe (26 disposals) was brilliant in defence, Josh Daicos (34) stood up in the middle and McStay kicked two important goals. Pendles' candy 🤝 McCreery's rocket #AFLDeesPies — AFL (@AFL) June 9, 2025 Nick Daicos kicked one goal from 19 disposals as he dealt with a tight tag from rebadged Melbourne winger Ed Langdon. The Demons (5-8) had their chances as Bayley Fritsch and Kysaiah Pickett kicked three goals each. Pickett put Melbourne in front briefly in the final quarter and Clayton Oliver (30 disposals, nine clearances) worked hard. The Demons dominated centre clearances (16-7) and overall clearances (39-29), and had a 54-45 advantage in forward entries, but couldn't make it count. Langdon wore Daicos like a glove from the outset and their tussle was central to multiple spotfires throughout a tight first half. Two Pickett goals bookended three straight Collingwood majors in the second quarter, his first a fortuitous hack off the deck from 45 metres. But the Demons managed just 2.4 for the term - to Collingwood's 4.0 - despite dominating the inside-50 count (21-9). The Magpies, who enjoyed an 18-11 advantage in free kicks in the first half, led by eight points at the main break after Tim Membrey slotted a set shot on the siren. Fritsch twice trimmed the margin to a solitary point with brilliant snaps in the final term, either side of a Nick Daicos goal on the end of a 50m penalty. And Pickett put Melbourne in front with another snap before McStay sent the Magpies ahead for the last time. Collingwood's victory extended their recent dominance of Melbourne to 11 wins in 13 meetings.

Galvin ends month of headlines with try in Bulldogs win

Lachlan Galvin has announced his Canterbury arrival by scoring a try and taking over as halfback, helping the Bulldogs stay top of the NRL in a 30-12 win over Parramatta. After a fortnight of speculation around his playing position, Galvin was forced to wait 57 minutes before entering the field against the Eels on Monday. When the teenage recruit did come on, he did so at half, with off-contract No.7 Toby Sexton shifting to hooker, in the surest sign yet of the Bulldogs' long-term plan. Galvin responded by being heavily involved in Canterbury's attack, and linking with five-eighth Matt Burton in the lead up to a Viliame Kikau try to put the Bulldogs up 18-12. And, after Harry Hayes crossed to make it 24-12, Galvin capped his arrival in the No.23 jersey by scoring his first try in Bulldogs colours to seal the match. After putting fullback Connor Tracey into space on the right edge, Galvin backed up on the play and ran onto a Josh Curran pass to score after a Jacob Kiraz offload. A TRY FOR THE NEW BULLDOG... LACHLAN GALVIN 🗣️#NRLBulldogsEels Telstra Moment of the Match. — NRL (@NRL) June 9, 2025 Galvin had been one of the most divisive figures in rugby league for the past two months, such was the nature of his highly-publicised exit from Wests Tigers. But there was nothing but love from Bulldogs fans, with a crowd of 59,878 in Accor Stadium on Monday. The 19-year-old's name was chanted before he even entered the field and he earned a standing ovation as he ran on and again with each of his first touches. And the roar was enormous when he crossed late in the match, 10 days after officially putting pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal with the Bulldogs. Notable too was how impressive Sexton's kicking game was for Canterbury before Galvin came on. The Bulldogs' regular halfback also entered Monday under intense scrutiny, given he is off-contract and seemingly unlikely to now be re-signed. Canterbury were able to dominate field position for the majority of the match, only for Parramatta's resolute defence to keep them in the contest. Burton scored early for the Bulldogs when he picked off a Ryley Smith pass from a scrum and went 60 metres to score. But the Eels returned the favour moments later when Zac Lomax intercepted a Burton pass and put Mitch Moses into space to score a 90-metre try. The Bulldogs took a 12-6 lead back when Burton went to the shortside in the 20th minute and sent Marcelo Montoya over. However the match swung again when Viliame Kikau was sin-binned for dagerous contact on a kicking Moses just before halftime and the Eels levelled the score on the next set. Canterbury went 14-12 clear when Moses was penalised for a high shot in the 50th minute, before the Bulldogs ran away with it late with Galvin the centre of attention.
