
I went to a DwP benefit cut consultation: here's what I found
'We should make the effort,' my wife said when the Department for Work & Pensions (DWO) announced public consultation events on its plans for arguably the biggest shake up to disability 'benefits' - I struggle with the word because I fail to see the benefit of being disabled - Britain has yet seen.
The firm tone told me that I had best agree. But she was also right. Democracy withers on the vine if people aren't willing to participate in it while the government's current policy, and especially its rhetoric, could have a severe impact on our family and many like us. Given the chance, we should push back against that.
So we signed up, even though the DWP seemed somewhat concerned about letting the public into its events. No location was provided and when it was finally revealed, it was accompanied by a stern instruction: 'Do not share these details with non-attendees, as they will not be allowed to enter the premises for this event.'
Perhaps this was with an eye on the demonstration in Manchester that resulted in a stand off between protestors and the DWP staff doing the consulting. Police were ultimately called.
The London event we attended - an extra date added to the DWP's disability world tour after the first was sold out - featured no such drama.
We arrived a little late, thanks in part to the difficulty we faced in finding a blue badge space near the local tube stop. Note to Work & Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall: if you're concerned about getting disabled people into work, the ability to access the workplace is the first hurdle you have to overcome. Parking is a part of that.
But at least my visions of besuited Sir Humphreys serving up fake smiles while wishing they were at their London clubs downing bottles of claret to help them get over dealing with the unwashed were proved false.
Several tables were set out, each moderated by a casually dressed civil servant. The atmosphere was relaxed and informal, even if none of us attending felt at all relaxed about policies which could have a devastating impact on those at the sharp end.
'People will starve because of this," one disability benefits campaigner told the Manchester Evening News. This was a point we tried to make, albeit in a more nuanced way.
The government has actually eschewed any consultations on changes to the Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which will make it much harder for those in need of support with daily living to claim.
However, whoever organised these sessions was smart enough to realise that this was going to come up and that trying to shut down conversation on it would go down like a wheelchair with slashed tyres.
We were thus allowed to make the point that if you cut support from people who can barely look after themselves at home, you're going to struggle to get them into work. The stated aim, even if the real motivation is to cut costs.
Another reform will see employment linked disability benefits - PIP does not depend on one's job status and is not means tested - reduced and made harder to claim.
We were asked how long the new contribution linked jobless benefit should last and we made the point that it takes disabled people a lot longer than non disabled people to find work.
What about mandatory interviews with job coaches and suchlike? I told our moderator that Scope, the charity, says there are a million disabled people who desperately want to work but can't find it. Rather than forcing people who are probably too sick and/or disabled down to job centres - people whom employers don't want - shouldn't the DWP be focussing its resources on helping these people? Those who are desperate for opportunities, keen as mustard but who may send out hundreds of applications without so much as a single interview?
I was throughly impressed with the people we were sat with. A range of disabilities were represented, but common to all was that they were knowledgeable and engaged. I couldn't help thinking that the government might get better results if these people were hired to work in policy.
But, of course, the DWP has trouble with employing disabled people. According to an analysis by the Big Issue earlier this year, it lost more employment tribunals for disability discrimination over the last five years than any other employer.
As well as criticising, we tried to offer up ideas. Our civil servant dutifully nodded along. They seemed keen to make us feel listened to, even if, by the end, they probably felt punch drunk. Time and again we were told how important our views were.
Yet I was still left wondering whether what we said will end up getting dropped into an AI to be distilled before being left at the bottom of a junior minister's red box. And were we just patsies, there so the government could claim it has listened when decisions have already been made? That is my fear.

It speaks volumes that we were given the number of the Samaritans on a handout. 'We understand that this can be distressing,' it said of the proposals. Well, yes. Perhaps think about why that might be?

Reform-led councils in ‘shambles' since local elections, opponents claim
Reform UK gained control of nine councils and minority control in three more in May's local elections, but opposition councillors claim the party's organisation and productivity have been a "shambles" since. Across the 12 Reform-controlled councils, 33 meetings have been cancelled or postponed in the first nine weeks since the election, and at least 21 Reform councillors have missed their first meetings. In Kent, nine out of 22 scheduled meetings have been cancelled since the election, including legally required meetings like the governance and audit committee. Brighton GP practice investigated for prescribing trans hormones to children
An investigation into a GP clinic in Brighton that prescribed transgender hormones to children has been launched by the NHS. The WellBN GP practice, which runs three clinics in Sussex, was ordered by health service leaders to stop prescribing cross-sex hormones to under 18s and the NHS has now launched a 'rapid investigation'. The NHS Sussex Integrated Care Board, which oversees the region's health services, said that the actions of GPs at WellBN 'may fall outside of national clinical policy and guidance'. 'Following concerns raised about some prescribing for children and young people by WellBN in Brighton and Hove, that may fall outside of national clinical policy and guidance, we are working with NHS England and have launched a rapid investigation into this activity to determine the most appropriate care and treatment for these patients,' it said. The administration of cross-sex drugs, also known as gender-affirming hormones, involves giving hormones such as testosterone to help someone change their physical appearance. They are different to puberty blockers, which stop the onset of puberty by suppressing the release of hormones. The Cass review, led by the paediatrician Baroness Hilary Cass, said all under 18s questioning their gender should be seen by a team of experts for a range of conditions, including mental health issues and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, before any treatment is considered. 'Extreme caution' recommended The independent review concluded that medical pathways to change genders had been 'built on shaky foundations' and called for puberty blockers to be banned, citing the 'weak evidence' to support their use in this group of patients. It urged 'extreme caution' in relation to cross-sex hormones in under 18s. But WellBN continued to prescribe the drugs, claiming on its website that it would prescribe the hormones to patients with a referral to a gender identity clinic while they waited for an appointment, and that it would also arrange a referral for any patients who did not have one. The GP practice is already the subject of a legal challenge by the parents of Child O, an anonymous 16-year-old boy, who claimed their child was prescribed cross-sex hormones without having been properly assessed by a gender-identity clinic and without their knowledge. The clinic previously said it had 'fully considered and responded back to the correspondence received from the family's representatives and will engage fully on any next steps'. It also said it is 'confident that any young patients under the age of 18 are assessed in accordance with good medical practice', adding: 'Gillick competence and bodily autonomy are at the heart of all care we offer and this framework is consistently applied.' 'Trans health hub' The practice operates a 'trans health hub' and patients - of which it says around 2,000 are trans or non-binary - can receive annual check-ups with 'a supportive and affirming clinician'. It has defended its prescribing of hormones to under 18s based on an 'informed consent pathway', which it says 'sets out the risks, potential side effects and reversible and irreversible intended effects of hormone therapy'. It comes after Wes Streeting last month ordered a review into the use of cross-sex hormones in children, which could join puberty blockers in being banned for use in under 18s to treat gender dysphoria. NHS Sussex said the majority, but not all, of the children being prescribed cross-sex hormones by the clinic lived in the region and that it would be reviewing each case to consider next steps for their treatment and care. 'The cohort of patients whose cases are being reviewed are all aged under 18, and for whom WellBN is prescribing or arranging the supply of medication for gender dysphoria,' it said. 'There will be a process to review their notes, and consider next steps in their treatment, in line with national guidance and clinical advice.' Temporary pause It said there would be 'different outcomes for different patients', with some referred to specialist NHS gender services, others seen by local mental health services, while some would have their hormone treatment reviewed. WellBN revealed last week that the NHS had 'forced us to temporarily pause initiating new NHS prescriptions for gender-affirming care to anyone under the age of 18', including a ban on taking on prescriptions from private sector providers. It vowed to try to 'turn this decision around' and said it would be meeting with NHS Sussex. Rachel Cashman, co-founder of community group PSHE Brighton, said she welcomed the investigation, adding that parents she had spoken with had been 'concerned' about WellBN's approach to treating under 18s with gender issues for some time. ' Gender distressed children deserve the most clinically efficacious treatment,' she said. 'PSHE Brighton welcomes an investigation by NHS England into the care provided by this service'.

EXCLUSIVE Ministers admit they spent £35,580 - more than a nurse or teacher's annual pay - on thousands of BEER MATS in pubs to boast about minimum wage going up
Labour ministers have admitted they spent £35,580 - which is more than a nurse or teacher's starting salary - on beer mats in pubs. The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) revealed the sum was spent on printing the drink coasters as part of an awareness campaign. Some 500,000 beer mats were distributed to 1,000 pubs across the country to help ensure workers were aware of this year's increase to the national minimum wage. Those who used or saw the beer mats were urged to 'make sure you're getting paid correctly' by visiting the website. Justin Madders, the minister for employment rights, said the distribution of beer mats was 'a unique opportunity to engage audiences in a social, high-dwell environment'. He described pubs as places 'where financial conversations naturally occur', adding: 'This setting encourages discussion and word-of-mouth sharing about rate changes.' According to the Government's National Careers Service website, the salary of a nurse at the beginning of her career is £31,000. And a newly-qualified secondary school teacher can expect to earn £32,000 a year. Mr Madders revealed the spending on beer mats in reply to a written parliamentary question by Tory MP Richard Holden, the shadow paymaster general. He said this year's campaign to advertise higher rates of the national minimum wage and national living wage was budgeted to cost up to £650,000 in total. 'The cost to advertise in pubs using beer mats was £35,580, which was approved at official level,' Mr Madders added. 'The 2024 campaign saw an increase in reach to eligible workers. 'However, recognition remained low, reinforcing the need for bolder, more engaging formats for the 2025 campaign, which expected to deliver an estimated 3.2 million impressions.' In April, the national living wage for those aged 21 and over rose from £11.44 per hour to £12.21 per hour. Meanwhile, the national minimum wage for 18 to 20-year-olds was increased from £8.60 to £10 per hour. But, despite the boost to pay packets, experts warned working age households are on track to be £400 worse off on average in this tax year. The Resolution Foundation said households were facing a 'triple hit' from the impacts of tax, higher bills, and benefits that are not keeping pace with the cost of living. Long-running freezes to personal tax thresholds will mean some people are dragged into paying more tax. And Labour's hike to employer national insurance will feed through to households through slower wage growth as employers recoup costs, the think tank said. The hospitality industry - including pub bosses - issued dire warnings about the impact of the national insurance hike when it was announced at October's Budget. They expressed fears about a 'double whammy' increase to costs, due to the rise in the national minimum wage coming in at the same time.
