Nelson and Youngblood score 15 each and No. 3 Alabama holds off Arkansas 85-81
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Grant Nelson and Chris Youngblood each scored 15 points and No. 3 Alabama held off a late Arkansas run to deal the Razorbacks' NCAA Tournament hopes a serious blow with an 85-81 win on Saturday night.
Mouhamed Dioubate scored 14 and Mark Sears added 11 as the Crimson Tide (20-3, 9-1 Southeastern Conference) won their sixth in a row.
Zvonimir Ivisic scored 27 points, while Adou Thiero added 22 and Johnell Davis chipped in 13 to lead the Razorbacks (14-9, 3-7).
Alabama led by 18 with 6:29 left but Arkansas went on a 13-2 run that helped cut the lead to two with less than a minute to play. But Nelson hit a 3-pointer to restore the Tide's two-possession lead.
Ivisic made one of two free throws to make it 83-81, but Youngblood hit a pair of free throws in the final four seconds.
Takeaways
Alabama may have stumbled in the waning minutes, but its balance and overall showing was more than enough to support the team's place in the top five. With losses Saturday by No. 1 Auburn and No. 2 Duke, Alabama's road to the top is clear.
Arkansas had beaten Kentucky, coach John Calipari's previous team, and Texas, the Razorbacks' oldest rival, to claw onto the NCAA Tournament bubble before Saturday's loss.

This upcoming season, Notre Dame's quarterback room is in a very similar spot to other programs competing for playoff berths this fall, but their group of guys isn't getting as much national attention compared to some of the other schools across the country. For the fifth season in a row, the Irish will be breaking in a new starter at quarterback, but it's only the second time they will be going with a home grown recruit. Advertisement In 2021, 2023 and 2024 the Fighting Irish elected to go with a transfer portal quarterback to lead the team's offense. In 2021, Wisconsin transfer Jack Coan was named the starter, Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman was named the starter in 2023 and this past season Duke transfer Riley Leonard was named the starter and played one of the biggest parts in leading Notre Dame to the National Championship game. Other schools have been in this boat in recent years as well. Oregon elected to go with Auburn transfer Bo Nix at the start of the 2022 season and he returned for his final year in 2023 before being drafted. The Ducks then got Oklahoma transfer Dillon Gabriel from the portal and was named the starter ahead of the 2024 season. Ohio State, the national title winners, got Kansas State transfer Will Howard out of the portal this past year who helped lead the Buckeyes to their first national title since 2014. This upcoming season, it's likely Oregon will go with former UCLA transfer Dante Moore at quarterback who transferred in prior to the start of the 2024 season. Now, he has a year of development under his belt and will likely be the starter in Eugene this fall. Ohio State is in a similar boat and is electing to go with former Alabama transfer Julian Sayin. Sayin transferred to Columbus weeks after arriving to Tuscaloosa as an early enrollee true freshman. Despite being an Alabama signee in the 2024 class, all of his development has came with the Buckeyes. A handful of other schools will be electing to go with an inexperienced or first time starter this upcoming season as well. Alabama will have a first time starter, Texas will be going with Arch Manning who only has two starts under his belt and Georgia will be going with Gunnar Stockton who only has one start under his belt (albeit in the AllState Sugar Bowl). Advertisement Whether Notre Dame elects to go with CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey, they will be heavily inexperienced at the quarterback position and will likely be in a position where their quarterback room will be the least experienced almost every week in the regular season. It's ironic to think that when the post season arrives, the experience conversation at quarterback will possibly be a more even discussion than the regular season. In 2024, the Irish will go up against Carson Beck, Marcel Reed, Taylen Green, Maddux Madsen, Jayden Maiava, Blake Horvath, Eli Holstein and CJ Bailey to name a few who all have more starting experience than their quarterback room. Regardless, Notre Dame is in a position to make another post season run, and they will be relying on a first time starter to take them to another playoff berth and another deep run. They're in a similar boat to other power house programs across the country and deserve to get some of the recognition that other schools are receiving. No matter who they go with, Mike Denbrock will have a high ceiling and extremely talented player lining up under center this fall. Freshman catcher becomes 7th Florida baseball transfer departure Florida catcher Brock Clayton entered the transfer portal this week, adding to the Gators' growing list of departures after a lackluster. Roster turnover is inevitable in this era of college baseball. Getting on the dirt early is every player's priority, and a year of waiting can be the difference between staying and going. That appears to be the case for Clayton, who did not play as a true freshman. While Clayton can take a redshirt and retain all four years of eligibility, he'll be draft-eligible next offseason, regardless of playtime. He's right on the cutoff, but Clayton will be 21 years old when the draft between his second and third college seasons takes place. It's a good thing for him because of increased leverage, but he's still the same prospect he was in high school until there's game film on him. It's hard not to read the tea leaves here, though. Florida's catching situation is dire next season unless Brody Donay or Luke Heyman is staying. Donay is going to the draft combine and would be taking a Ty Evans-like gamble on himself if he came back, and last offseason's JUCO addition Cole Bullen left earlier this month. Florida Baseball 2025 Transfer Portal Movement Clayton is the seventh player to leave Florida for the transfer portal this offseason. Left-handed sophomore Jacob Gomberg was the first to depart, followed by right-handers Alex Philpott (So.) and Carson Montsdeoca (Fr.). JUCO catcher Cole Bullen (Jr.) and right-handed freshmen Niko Janssens and Felix Ong made up the next wave of transfers. Of course, Florida's early exit from the NCAA Tournament allowed Kevin O'Sullivan to make recruiting calls ahead of schedule, and the Gators have brought in four names. Notre Dame senior Ricky Reeth and UCF sophomore Russell Sandefer are the new right-handed arms, and the recent addition of Jacksonville's Jaden Bastian gives the Orange and Blue an elite outfield. Catcher AJ Malzone from the JUCO ranks rounds out the group.
