Canada Basketball names B.C.'s Gordie Herbert next men's head coach

Gordie Herbert will take over as head coach of the senior men's national team in 2026, Canada Basketball announced Thursday.

The Penticton, B.C., native led Germany to a FIBA World Cup title in 2023 and a fourth-place finish at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

He'll replace Jordi Fernandez, who stepped down in February after guiding Canada to a historic bronze medal at the 2023 World Cup and its first Olympic berth in 24 years.

'His championship pedigree, command of the FIBA game, and understanding of what it takes to compete for medals on the world stage make him the ideal leader for this next chapter of Canada Basketball.'

A former national team player, Herbert represented Canada at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles under Hall of Fame coach Jack Donohue. He also had a standout NCAA career at the University of Idaho, helping lead the Vandals to the Sweet 16 in 1982.

Herbert previously served as an assistant with the Canadian program from 2001-02, returned in 2018 to help during multiple FIBA qualifying windows, and was on Nick Nurse's staff at the 2021 Olympic qualifying tournament in Victoria.

'I'm incredibly honoured and excited for the opportunity to coach my home country,' said Herbert, who currently coaches FC Bayern Munich.

His coaching resume spans more than three decades across Europe's top leagues, with titles in Germany and France and coach of the year honours in Austria, Finland and Germany.

Carlo Ancelotti's son Davide joins Brazil as an assistant coach
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil's soccer confederation announced on Friday that Davide Ancelotti had joined his father, Carlo Ancelotti, as an assistant coach for the five-time World Cup champions. Davide Ancelotti started his career as an assistant coach in 2015, following his father at Napoli, Everton, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Brazil's soccer body said in a statement that the 35-year-old Davide Ancelotti's arrival 'represents another step in our search for innovation and technical improvements.' 'His international experience and training methodologies will be fundamental for the players' development and for the construction of an even more competitive team,' it said. Carlo Ancelotti's debut with Brazil at Ecuador on Thursday ended in a 0-0 draw, which kept the team in the fourth place in the South American World Cup qualifying standings. CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela beat Bolivia 2-0 on Friday to extend its advantage in seventh place in South American World Cup qualifying and a potential spot in an intercontinental playoff for next year's tournament in North America. Bolivian Héctor Cuellar scored an own goal in the fifth minute after a simple pass to goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra ended in the back of the net. The hosts added a second in the 30th minute with striker Salomón Rondón, Venezuela's all-time top goal scorer with 47 goals, after he chested down a cross from Nahuel Ferraresi and scored with his left foot. Bolivia, which now trails Venezuela by four points with only three rounds to play, never threatened goalkeeper Rafael Romo at the Monumental Stadium in the eastern city of Maturin, Venezuela. Also on Friday, Colombia drew Peru 0-0 at home and failed to overtake Brazil in the standings. It was Colombia's fifth consecutive match without a win.
