Muslims raze parts of dargah to make way for road expansion in UP's Sambhal
Nearly a month after the public works department (PWD) issued a notice instructing removal of encroachments for a road-widening project in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district, Muslims themselves razed parts of a dargah (mausoleum) that was located in the middle of a road hindering the project in Hayatnagar area of that district.
The mosque committee started the process on Sunday and it concluded on Monday. The committee also employed some labourers to expedite the work. Aqeel Ahmad, a member of the mosque committee, said, 'The authorities informed us that the structure was obstructing the construction work. When the officials ask for it, we have no choice but to cooperate.'
'We were waiting for Bakrid to get over. Now, we have removed the dargah ourselves,' said a local Waqar Ahmed. The committee said development work should not be obstructed by religious structures. Police and administrative teams were deployed at the site during the operation. Earlier, Hindus had also demolished a temple located just opposite the dargah. That temple too was obstructing the road project.
Sub-divisional magistrate Vandana Mishra said: 'Only the portions falling within the designated road area are being removed. This applies to parts of the dargah, mosque and even a portion of a nearby temple.'

RCB stampede probe: Judicial commission gets 2 retired officers for assistance
Bengaluru: The state govt Monday appointed two retired civil service officers to provide technical and legal assistance to Justice John Michael D'Cunha, who heads the one-man judicial commission investigating the stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium that left 11 people dead and 75 injured on June 4. NS Prasanna Kumar, a retired IAS officer, and MK Srivastav, a retired IPS officer, have been appointed to the commission. According to sources, Kumar retired from service in June 2020 and is currently an adviser to Karnataka Administrative Reforms Commission, while Srivastav retired in Feb 2011 as DGP. The govt notification on the matter stated a separate order would be issued regarding their salary. The commission has one month to investigate the stampede and submit a report to the state govt. Justice D'Cunha is already heading a commission investigating two sensitive cases — the alleged Covid-era medical procurement scam and deaths of patients due to suspected oxygen shortage at the Chamarajanagar district hospital. But following the stampede, the govt launched a three-pronged investigation — judicial, magisterial, and CID, which took over the criminal probe Friday evening from Cubbon Park police. The Bengaluru Urban deputy commissioner is heading the magisterial probe. The D'Cunha commission was formed on June 5, a day after the tragedy. The govt has instructed the DGP, Bengaluru city police commissioner, and Bengaluru Urban DC to provide files and documents for investigation by the commission. PWD min to review KSCA land lease With CM Siddaramaiah stating he would "examine" the possibility of shifting Chinnaswamy Stadium to the outskirts of Bengaluru, public works minister Satish Jarkiholi has sought the file related to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) lease agreement on the land. "KSCA pays Rs 19,000 a year for the land, and it has been renewed twice already for 30 years each. I've asked for the file, to check when their lease ends," said Jarkiholi. It may be recalled that 13 years ago, PWD had calculated a revised estimate of the annual rent — Rs 78.7 crore — based on the guidance value at the time. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had also pulled up the govt 20 years ago for failing to collect the market value rent from KSCA and had estimated it had foregone as much as Rs 203 crore in revenue back then.

Curfew imposed in Assam town after recovery of severed cow head from temple triggers tension
Guwahati, June 9 (UNI) Curfew was imposed on Monday in Assam's Dhubri town, with the administration apprehending breach of peace and public tranquility amidst prevailing tension following the recovery of a severed cow head and beef from the premises of a temple. The incident triggered widespread protests in the town, and the locals demanded immediate action against the culprits. Although the police and senior district administration officials reached the spot in Ward no 3 immediately they faced resistance from the locals. The local Hindu community also prevented the police from removing the banned substance from the temple until the culprits are arrested. The people took to the streets and shouted slogans in protest. This is the third incident of recovery of beef from the same temple in recent times. The District Commissioner, Dhubri, promulgated prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Samhita 2023. As per the prohibitory order, all shops and market establishments falling within the Dhubri Town area will remain closed until further notice. The order also banned assembly of 5 (five) or more persons in any public places, streets and thoroughfares intending to hold demonstration/meeting/procession or anything similar in Dhubri town area. "Organising any Rally/Procession/Meeting/Demonstration are strictly prohibited," the order said adding that only emergency services like Medical Establishment, Education institutions, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, Police, APDCL officials, Army and other Paramilitary forces and such other persons specifically permitted and in whose favour relaxation is granted either by the undersigned or by those who are authorized to issue relaxation of this order as deemed fit and proper. Assam police had arrested 16 persons recently for illegal cattle slaughter and sale of beef on the occasion of Eid Ul Zuha . Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that cattle parts were found in five places including near Cotton University (Kamrup M), Dhubri, Hojai, and Sribhumi (Bagargool). Five illegal slaughter sites were uncovered – 3 in Cachar (Gumrah, Silchar, Lakhipur) and 2 in Karimganj (Badarpur, Banga). 16 arrests were made – 9 from Cachar and 7 from Sribhumi, Sarma posted on his X handle on Sunday and added that strict action will be taken against the violators. Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 banned cattle slaughter and sale of beef in areas where Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs are in the majority and within a five-km radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monastery). The Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 also regulated the transportation, and slaughter of all cattle, and sale of beef and beef products in the state. In December last year, the Assam cabinet decided to amend the 2021 act and put a restriction on public consumption of beef also. Sharmishta Panoli row: Wajahat Khan Qadri, man who filed case against influencer, arrested in Kolkata
The Kolkata Police on Monday arrested Wajahat Khan Qadri, the man who filed a case against social media influencer and law student Sharmistha Panoli, reported India Today. According to the Kolkata Police, Khan's police complaint led to the arrest of the social media influencer. Khan was allegedly on the run since 1 June after a series of raids. Earlier, a case was registered against Wajahat Khan at the Golf Green Police Station in Kolkata for allegedly spreading hate speech and hurting religious sentiments via his social media activity. Despite the police serving Khan three notices at his Garden Reach residence and directing him to appear for questioning, he remained on the run until his arrest. Khan's arrest comes amid mounting controversy over Panoli's arrest, who was held from Gurugram on 30 May by Kolkata Police, following a controversial video she posted on social media which drew strong reactions. In the video, she allegedly criticised Bollywood celebrities for staying silent on Operation Sindoor. After intense trolling and threats in the comments, Panoli removed the video and issued a public apology on 15 May. Earlier on 3 June, the Calcutta High Court had rejected the interim bail plea of Panoli. On 2 June, Shree Ram Swabhiman Parishad filed a formal complaint against Wajahat Khan with the Kolkata Police, accusing him of using derogatory, inflammatory, and sexually explicit language targeting Hindu deities, religious traditions, and the community at large. In the letter to the Officer-in-Charge of the Garden Reach Police Station, Shree Ram Swabhiman Parishad alleged that Khan in his social media posts referred Hindus by using terms including "rapist cultures" and "urine drinkers". The Hindu body requested the police to take action against Khan under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.
