The Dallas Mavericks' controversial decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers has sparked a fresh wave of criticism, this time from one of the franchise's most iconic figures.

Hall of Famer Don Nelson used his appearance at the NBA Finals not only to accept the prestigious Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award but to issue a bold, visual protest, donning Doncic's latest signature shoes as a direct rebuke of the trade. His dramatic gesture has reignited conversation across the league and among Mavericks fans still reeling from the blockbuster move.
Don Nelson called Luka Doncic's trade a tremendous mistake
Don Nelson, the NBA's all-time winningest coach until 2022, made a rare public appearance at Game 2 of the NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder.
As he received a career-capping honor, Nelson made an unexpected statement that sparked a huge discussion in the basketball world.
'I want everybody to know I'm wearing Luka's shoes, his new shoes from Nike … and I'm wearing them in protest for the trade from Dallas,' said Nelson in front of gathered media. 'I think it was a tremendous mistake by the Dallas franchise to trade him. I want everybody to know that.'
The 85-year-old coaching legend hasn't left Hawaii in seven years, but said this occasion and this message were important enough to break that streak.
With his son Donnie Nelson, the former Mavericks GM who drafted Doncic in 2018, also in attendance and sporting matching footwear, creating a moment of protest and pride for the Nelson family.
Nelson, who coached the Mavericks from 1997 to 2005, is revered in Dallas and across the league. During his tenure, he laid much of the foundation for the Mavericks' modern identity and coached legends like Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash.

'Luka is my dear friend,' Nelson added. 'My philosophy was always, when you've got a great player, he's yours for a lifetime. You don't get rid of great players.'
That philosophy, Nelson explained, traces back to Red Auerbach, his coaching mentor.
'His philosophy was when you have a great player — Bill Russell, Havlicek, Sam Jones, you name 'em — you don't lose that player. You keep him for a lifetime. You put his number up, and you honor that player.
That's been my philosophy.'
Doncic's exit from Dallas in a trade for Anthony Davis stunned the league and enraged the Mavericks' fanbase, many of whom called for general manager Nico Harrison's resignation.
While the Mavericks now pivot toward rebuilding around Cooper Flagg, who they are widely expected to select, Nelson's protest serves as a reminder that some mistakes linger longer than others.

Despite being away from the sidelines for over a decade, Nelson's influence on the game remains profound. 'History has already reflected Don Nelson's staggering contributions as a cutting-edge innovator and visionary of the NBA game,' Carlisle said via ESPN. 'Back in the '80s and '90s, he made teams adjust to historic pace, liberal 3-point shooting, inverted offense and disruptive defensive schemes.'
As for the legendary ex-Mavs coach, Don Nelson recorded 1,335 coaching wins.

‘Tallest monk in history': NBA star shaves head for spiritual journey at Shaolin Temple in China; check photos and video

Victor Wembanyama, the towering 7'3' star of the San Antonio Spurs, just traded dunks for deep breaths. After ending last season early due to a rare blood clot in his shoulder, the French phenom was spotted at China's legendary Shaolin Temple — bald and Zen. The 21-year-old NBA All-Star and 2023-24 Rookie of the Year is taking a spiritual detour after a rough season. Benched since February due to a rare deep vein thrombosis, Wemby missed the playoffs as the Spurs got knocked out. Now, he's gone off-grid, reportedly staying at the legendary Shaolin Temple in China. While Wemby hasn't posted anything himself, a state-run outlet in Henan claims the French baller is indeed at the temple, though staff refuse to spill details. Before vanishing into monk mode, Wemby was spotted living it up in Beijing, hitting the Great Wall, shopping, shooting hoops and strolling through parks. The Shaolin Temple is known for attracting celebs like YouTuber IShowSpeed. An image that has gone viral shows Wemby, now shaved-head and solemn, sitting in a monk's chamber surrounded by tiny Buddha statues. In another photo, he looks like arranging food to eat. According to CNN, Chinese state media confirmed the baller's surprise visit. They have called it a 10-day retreat for peace and spiritual strength. A Twitter (now X) user named EnmingHuang has shared multiple photos of the basketball player, who is also known as The Alien. 'Wemby is going into the 10 days closed door training at Shaolin Temple. Let's not disturb him,Maybe no news from him for the next ten days!' the user wrote. Another X account called him 'Perhaps the 'tallest monk' in history, both ancient and modern'. 'Victor Wembanyama had his head shaved at the Shaolin Temple in Henan Province, donned monastic robes, and shared a vegetarian meal, preparing for a 10-day spiritual journey to learn Shaolin Kung Fu,' wrote China in Pictures on X. 'While most NBA players visit China for business-related activities, Wembanyama's trip is genuinely about cultural exploration,' it added. The NBA's official social media account in China shared the pic, according to CNN. They said Wembanyama had joined the monks for reflection and healing. A fan even caught him on video at the 1,500-year-old temple, famous for kung fu and Zen teachings. Is Wemby levelling up his mindset before his comeback? Fans are loving this spiritual side of the rising star. They can't wait to see if it reflects on court!

NBA Finals Game 3: Key prediction on OKC vs Indiana Pacers - Who wins and where will the series go?

The 2025 NBA Finals are underway, and the Oklahoma City Thunder are getting ready to host the Indiana Pacers for Game 2. Indiana is up 1-0 in the series. But Indiana didn't give up. They fought back, and with just 0.3 seconds left, Tyrese Haliburton hit a clutch shot to win the game, 111-110. Now Game 2 will be in Oklahoma City at the Paycom Center. The Thunder really need a win before the series shifts to Indiana. Sometimes teams shine in the regular season but can't keep it up in the playoffs. That's not the case for Oklahoma City. They've been strong all year and have made it to the Finals. Now, they're going for the title. In the playoffs, they swept Memphis 4-0 and beat Minnesota 4-1. Their toughest matchup was against Denver, which they won 4-3. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named the MVP this season. Winning the championship would be the perfect ending. No one expected them to get this far, but they earned their spot. They beat Milwaukee 4-1 in the first round, which was expected. But then they shocked everyone by beating the top-seeded Cleveland team, also 4-1. In the Eastern Conference Finals, they took down the New York Knicks 4-2. Tyrese Haliburton has been huge for the team, especially in the clutch. He's averaging 18 points and almost 10 assists per game in the playoffs. Oklahoma has won 8 playoff games at home this year. Indiana has won 7 out of 9 road playoff games. Odds: Thunder win – 1.18, Pacers win – 5.0. Only one game has been played in this series so far, but it was wild. Haliburton made the game-winner at the buzzer to give Indiana a 111-110 win. Pacers lead the series 1-0, but this fight is far from over. Game prediction The Thunder are favorites heading into Game 2, just like they were in Game 1. They can't afford to lose both home games to start the Finals. Expect Oklahoma City to bounce back. A bet on them to win by at least 10 points (-9.5 spread) looks like a solid choice.
