Eels star Cherrington to miss start of NRLW season
Kennedy Cherrington will miss at least the first three weeks of the NRLW season with the knee injury she suffered in the third State of Origin match.
She could be joined on the sidelines by captain Mahalia Murphy, who is racing to recover from a minor hamstring injury in time for the season opener against Cronulla.
Parramatta had initially hoped NSW forward Cherrington may recover from her posterior cruciate ligament injury in time for the opener on July 3.
But she is now tracking to miss up to a third of the regular season with the injury that prevented her from playing the second half of NSW's game-three loss in Newcastle last month.
It's a blow for Cherrington, who missed the end of last season with a separate knee issue.
"It's tough for Kennedy but it'll be good to get her for the back half of the season," said coach Steve Georgallis.
"We're hoping she'll be back for round four or round five at the latest."
Eels captain for a second straight season, Murphy is hoping to return from a hamstring injury in time to face the Sharks.
"Mahalia's just got a little niggle," Georgallis said.
"We're hoping she should be back for round one but if we feel like she's not ready then we're not going to push her."
The news is less rosy for Eels forward Boss Kapua, who fractured her fibula in an opposed session and will miss the opening weeks of the competition.
"She's tough, she walked off the field and she just said, 'I'm a bit sore here'," Georgallis said.
"We were glad it wasn't syndesmosis because syndesmosis can be like 12 (weeks), three months. She'll be three or four weeks. She might even be back before Kennedy."

Supercars Darwin: Feeney completes clean sweep
Broc Feeney completed a clean sweep of all three Supercars races at Hidden Valley, taking another convincing win at the Darwin circuit. Feeney started from pole position, again, and was headed only briefly over the 70-lap distance to take his third win of the weekend and sixth at the track for and his Triple Eight Chevrolet. Advertisement From pole he dominated the early going, building a small gap before he dropped the hammer on lap 10, building a 3s lead in four laps. But Grove Racing's Matt Payne made his first compulsory pitstop on lap 14, undercutting Feeney and seizing the lead when the Camaro driver emerged from the pitlane on lap 30. But Feeney, on much fresher tyres, duly reclaimed the lead two laps later. In the second half of the race the two drivers stuck to their strategies. Feeney's second stop came with just eight laps to go and he resumed 2.4s in the lead, stretching that to six seconds at the flag, the first driver to sweep the Darwin races since Scott McLaughlin did it six years ago. 'The triple crown has always been a thing for me,' said a happy Feeney. 'I watched Scotty win it back in 2019 and I am so proud of this team. It is hard to put together a weekend like that. I tried to look after the tyres and I got three cracker starts, and I could put my foot down when it was needed.' Roosters show their might by flogging Cowboys
The Sydney Roosters have reaffirmed their status as genuine NRL final threats, putting on a 42-8 flogging of North Queensland at Allianz Stadium. In one of their most dominant performances of the season, the Roosters ran in five second-half tries on the hapless Cowboys to go seventh on the ladder. It was only three-and-a-half months ago that the Roosters conceded 50 points to Brisbane in round one, then dropped four of their first five games. But this is suddenly a very different Roosters outfit. Sunday's win was their biggest of 2025, and the second half was close to their most impressive. The only concerns were injuries to second-rower Siua Wong and five-eighth Sandon Smith, both picking up knee issues. But this is a Roosters squad whose depth seemingly has no end. The Roosters No.1 scored his try, made a bust before Billy Smith's first, then helped the Tri-colours on the attack for the centre's second. But his most crucial play was a late one-on-one strip on John Bateman just before halftime, with the Cowboys on the attack and fighting to make it 18-10. In contrast, the past month has been a nightmare for the Cowboys, after they were beaten 58-4 by the Dolphins last week. Todd Payten's men are now 12th on the ladder, with just one win since they demolished Gold Coast at Magic Round. They have spent large chunks of time since then without Jason Taumalolo, and also missed State of Origin forwards Reuben Cotter and Reece Robson on Sunday. But things must turn around dramatically if they are to go anywhere near replicating last season's fifth-placed finish.
