It has already been 30 years since Toyota debuted a hybrid concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show; testing following a year later. The very first Prius launched in Japan at the end of 1997, and the model became a symbol of fuel efficiency into the new millennium.
Today, the words 'hybrid' and 'Toyota' are tightly intertwined. Listen and you'll hear the spaceship sounds of a Toyota hybrid rolling down the road with its distinct tone. Seventeen of the brand's models are hybrids, including the popular RAV4 (offered only as a hybrid for 2026 models). Its hybrids have been performing very well for Toyota.
'Toyota's stubborn focus on hybrids over EVs is part of a broader challenge by the world's biggest automaker to the prevailing industry and regulatory orthodoxy that all cars will be electric in the near future,' reported Reuters in August 2024.
Indeed, Toyota chairman (and grandson of Toyota founder Kiichiro Toyoda) Akio Toyoda has been often criticized by the media for the brand's slow approach to all-electric vehicles. Then the market for EVs started showing signs of slowing down, and the current administration's determination to eliminate the federal tax credit for EVs started to alter the trajectory of the battery-electric vehicle uptake. As it turns out, Toyota's approach to hybrids may have been the smartest move for them.
In January and February, Toyota's U.S. sales rose 20 percent, powered by an 83 percent rise in sales of its hybrids and plug-in models.
'We're not saying EVs are not a good solution to carbon emissions,' Jack Hollis, executive vice president of Toyota North America told the New York Times in 2024. 'They are. They're just not the only solution, and a lot of our customers have been telling us they want choice — hybrids, plug-ins, and EVs.'

At Toyota's Princeton, Indiana plant on the southwest side of the state, the automaker's one millionth hybrid just rolled off the line on June 12. The facility employs 7,650 Toyota employees and they have been building the all-hybrid Sienna at the Indiana site since 2003. Going forward, the Princeton plant will prepare for assembly of an all-new, three row battery electric SUV.
Toyota says Sienna sales were up more than 95 percent year-over-year in May. In total, its electrified lineup accounted for nearly half of Toyota's sales volume that month, indicting a solid appetite for fuel-sipping vehicles. The Sienna gets an impressive 36 mph combined rating from the EPA, and it's a comfortable family hauler for short and long trips alike.
With current tariff fluctuations in the auto market giving automakers figurative whiplash, Toyota's Indiana plant is representative of the strong presence the brand has in the U.S. Including its new battery plant in North Carolina, Toyota has 11 manufacturing plants in the U.S. and a massive campus at its North American headquarters in Plano, Texas.
As America figures out where it wants to be in terms of BEV charging infrastructure, cars, and energy, Toyota is hedging its bets wisely.

Global streaming company DAZN acquired the rights to this year's Club World Cup in late 2024 for a reported $1 billion. Starting Saturday, it will stream games from the tournament in 15 languages around the world—for free. It is a 'big bet' on using a single sports competition to drive sustained viewership long term, DAZN's global chief revenue officer Walker Jacobs said in an interview about the company's business strategy. UK-based DAZN launched in 2015, correctly forecasting a world where fans consumed sports on streaming services. It has since gobbled up sports rights including marquee European soccer in home markets, major boxing events and NFL action outside the U.S. The platform now streams more than 90,000 events a year in 200 countries. Jacobs said the Club World Cup will be particularly helpful for the North American business, as well as growth markets stretching from Latin America to Japan. DAZN has had a smaller footprint in the U.S. following the conclusion of a 2010s push that saw it grab former ESPN president John Skipper and sign an MLB rights deal for a reported $300 million in 2018. In recent years, it has expanded free and ad-supported access, such as streaming Women's Champions League soccer matches on YouTube. Advertisement While Club World Cup games are available for free, DAZN is reserving certain features in a 'FIFA Club World Cup premium' package for its $30 per month (or $225 per year) subscription tier, such as improved audio and picture quality, fewer ads, and extended highlights and replays. DAZN has also made sublicensing deals around the world—including with TNT Sports and Univision in the U.S.—worth 'hundreds of millions [of dollars],' according to chief executive of growth markets Pete Oliver. The company has inked new sponsorship deals to offset the cost it paid for the rights as well. DAZN plans to roll out two-box advertising that shows commercials during stoppages in play, a first in FIFA competition. Then there are additional tie-ups for content on TikTok and X. 'A subscription service business is something that is sort of a cornerstone of what our offering is and will continue to be,' Jacobs said. 'But in all of our rights deals, we're trying to make sure that we have the flexibility to window the content in the ways that are optimal to us and optimal to our business model.' Do not call any of these numbers. We are now being repeatedly warned that legitimate infrastructure is being hijacked by attackers. This includes spoofed Google support addresses, Gmail passwords and even federal agency phone numbers. Now there's another such attack to beware. Malwarebytes warns that scammers are crafting malicious search engine results that link to legitimate sites — such as Netflix or Microsoft, but then open a webpage that includes a search box with a dangerous phone number inserted. The team says this could be called 'a search parameter injection attack, because the scammer has crafted a malicious URL that embeds their own fake phone number into the genuine site's legitimate search functionality.' If you call the number, the handler will pretend to represent the brand you called from, 'with the aim of getting their victim to hand over personal data or card details, or even allow remote access to their computer.' If that brand is a financial firm such as PayPal or Bank Of America, scammers will try to empty accounts. Malicious phone numbers on real website Malwarebytes says users should watch for these red flags: This follows another warning this week from Netcraft, that threat actors are 'exploiting [search engine] While Netcraft says SEO poisoning usually 'promotes malicious or fraudulent websites by exploiting the ranking systems of platforms like Google,' in these injection attacks the websites are real, making it much harder for users to immediately detect the threat. The phone numbers can even appear in the search engine results themselves. What's interesting is there has been so much focus from Google, the FBI and others on not responding to proactive technical or account support calls, that this puts the onus back on users, following official advice to find numbers for themselves before contacting any support desk. But adhere to those red flags and you'll be fine.
