Hamas launches appeal against UK ban

Al Arabiya10-04-2025

UK-based lawyers said they have asked the British government to lift a ban on the Palestinian militant group Hamas, a petition that has drawn sharp criticism from opposition politicians.
The legal submission argues the ban contravenes Britain's human rights commitments, with the militants insisting on 'the legitimacy of the struggle of the Palestinian people for independence, territorial integrity, national unity and liberation.'
The military wing of Hamas was designated a 'terrorist group' by the UK in 2001. The United States and the European Union consider Hamas a terror group.
Hamas' proscription was extended in 2021 to include the political wing, with the group considered a 'complex but single terrorist organization,' according to the government website.
In the UK, belonging to, encouraging and expressing support for a proscribed organization, among other acts, are criminal offences.
The Home Office said it did not comment on proscription matters.
The submission to the UK interior ministry was announced by London-based firm Riverway Law on Wednesday.
It added the right to resist 'foreign occupation by all available means, including armed struggle, is moral, legitimate and explicitly enshrined in international law.'
Hamas militants stormed over Israel's border with the Gaza Strip to carry out the October 7, 2023 attack against Israel in which 1,218 people were killed on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to Israeli tallies.
In retaliation, Israel vowed to crush Hamas and has relentlessly bombarded Gaza, with the death toll since the start of the war now at more than 50,000 people, mostly civilians, according to the territory's health ministry.
Riverway Law said it was instructed by Mousa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas official.
By banning Hamas 'Britain is effectively denying the Palestinians the right to defend themselves,' the lawyers said in a statement on X.
The submission argues that the proscription of Hamas is 'disproportionate' because the group 'does not pose any threat' to Britain's national security.
The plea says the ban goes against Britain's human rights duties, including under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) – which has become a target of UK's political right since Britain left the European Union in 2020.
The application has drawn sharp criticism from opposition politicians, with shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel slamming the group as a 'evil, Iranian-backed terrorist organization.'
'Those campaigning to end the proscription of Hamas fail to understanding the seriousness of the threats this terrorist organization poses,' Patel said in a statement.

Muslim Nations Should Build Palestinian State on Their Lands: US Envoy to Israel

The US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has said that 'Muslim countries' should build a Palestinian state on their territory, according to BBC. 'Muslim countries have 644 times the amount of land that are controlled by Israel. So maybe, if there is such a desire for the Palestinian state, there would be someone who would say, we'd like to host it,' Huckabee said in a videotaped interview with the BBC. During the interview, he harshly criticized US allies, including the UK and Australia, for imposing sanctions on two far-right Israeli ministers over 'repeated incitements of violence against Palestinian communities' in the occupied West Bank. On June 1, Huckabee attacked France's call for recognizing the Palestinian state, stating that if it adopted such an outcome, it could 'carve out a piece of the French Riviera' and create one, according to Al-Arabiya. The ambassador described the initiative at the UN as 'incredibly inappropriate when Israel is in the midst of a war.' The Israeli statement came after Macron's call for European countries to toughen up their stance on Israel if the humanitarian situation in Gaza did not improve. 'If France is really so determined to see a Palestinian state, I've got a suggestion for them — carve out a piece of the French Riviera and create a Palestinian state. They are welcome to do that, but they are not welcome to impose that kind of pressure on a sovereign nation,' Huckabee said. In May, Israel also accused French President Emmanuel Macron of undertaking a 'crusade against the Jewish state.' US Denies Involvement in Israeli Strikes on Iran

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States was not involved in Israel's unilateral strikes on Iran, according to The New York Times. Israeli Strikes were Necessary Rubio said Israel started the attacks and acted unilaterally based on its belief that the operation was necessary for self-defense. 'We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region. Israel advised us that they believe this action was necessary for its self-defense,' Rubio said. Significant Warning He also warned Iran late Thursday not to respond to Israeli strikes by targeting American bases in the region. Importantly, the US military maintains a large fleet of warplanes, naval vessels as well as thousands of troops stationed at its bases in the region, including in Qatar and Bahrain. 'Let me be clear: Iran should not target US interests or personnel,' Rubio added. US Precautionary Measures On Wednesday, the United States withdrew diplomats from Iraq and authorized the voluntary departure of the family members of U.S. military personnel from the Middle East. 'President Trump and the administration have taken all necessary steps to protect our forces and remain in close contact with our regional partners,' he said. Talks Comes to a Standstill US and Iranian officials were set to hold a sixth round of talks on Tehran's escalating uranium enrichment program in Oman on Sunday. However, the talks seemed to be deadlocked. On Thursday, Trump also raised the possibility of an Israeli strike on Iran stating that it 'could very well happen.' At the same time, he stressed his hopes for a peaceful resolution. 'My entire Administration has been directed to negotiate with Iran,' he posted on social media around 5 p.m. Eastern time. 'They could be a Great Country, but they first must completely give up hopes of obtaining a Nuclear Weapon.'
