Soccer-Jackson gets two-match ban for red card at Club World Cup

(Reuters) -Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has been given an extended two-match ban for his red card in the English club's 3-1 loss to Flamengo at the Club World Cup.
Jackson had been on the pitch for only four minutes in the second half when he was sent off for a nasty studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas, his second red card in his last four matches in all competitions.
The 24-year-old received an automatic one-match suspension, ruling him out of Tuesday's final group-stage clash against Esperance Sportive de Tunis. However, FIFA's disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and deemed it serious foul play and extended the ban.
"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed the following sanction on Chelsea's player Nicolas Jackson who was sent off as a result of a direct red card during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 match between his team and CR Flamengo..." FIFA said in a statement as quoted by ESPN on Tuesday.
"(A) 2-match suspension for breach under article 14 paragraph 1 e) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This decision is final and binding and cannot be appealed."
Jackson apologised for his actions on social media after the match. He will miss Chelsea's potential last-16 tie if they advance.

Benfica beat Bayern to top group C
CHARLOTTE: Portugal's Benfica beat German champions Bayern Munich 1-0 on Tuesday to book their place in the last 16 of the Club World Cup and finish top of Group C. Bayern, who had never lost to Benfica in a competitive game before, finish second in the group and will face Brazil's Flamengo in the last 16. Benfica will face the runner-up in Group D which will be Chelsea or Esperance. With Bayern already sure of their place in the knockout stage, their coach Vincent Kompany made seven changes to his starting line-up and it showed in a sloppy first half display. Only goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, defender Josip Stanisic, left-back Raphael Guerreiro and winger Serge Gnabry were kept from the team which beat Boca in the previous fixture. Benfica needed a win or a draw to join Bayern in the next round and eliminate Boca Juniors, who were playing Auckland. The Lisbon side began brightly and Neuer was brought into action early to save a Renato Sanches effort from the edge of the box. Benfica grabbed the lead in the 13th minute when Frederik Aursnes got to the byline and pulled the ball back. Norwegian winger Andreas Schjelderup met it with a first time effort which he buried into the bottom corner. The game was played in intense heat which had an impact on the tempo of the game, with both teams playing at a slow pace and conserving energy. Bayern had one opportunity before the break when Gnabry pulled the ball back to Leroy Sane, but the former Manchester City winger fired high over the bar. Kompany, who knew his side risked losing top spot in the group, had seen enough from his back-up players and made a triple substitution at the break bringing on Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich. Suddenly, Bayern looked dangerous – a long ball over to the top from Kimmich found Sane but with only the goalkeeper to beat he shot straight at Ukrainian Anatoliy Trubin. Trubin was in inspired form and kept out a dangerous effort from Thomas Muller but Benfica offered a reminder of their threat on the break when Kerem Akturkoglu beat Dayot Upamecano but could not get past Neuer. Kimmich had the ball in the net with a low drive from the edge of the box but Kane was in an offside position in the goalkeeper's line of vision and the effort was ruled out. Bayern pushed forward in search of a goal that could have sent them back to top of the group but Trubin was out fast again to deny Sane and deep in stoppage time Kane mistimed a header from close range. "I think this was a very fair and important win, historic really," said Benfica head coach Bruno Lage, who said few in the media had believed his team could beat Bayern. "We were as straightforward and assertive as we should be and I think we were very effective in delivering our strategy today," he added. Bayern boss Kompany said both teams deserved credit for the way they handled the heat. "You could see that it was really tough conditions so respect to both teams for that. Our first half was not good enough for sure, the second half was definately more the level that we expected and good enough to score one or two or three goals," he said.

FIFA to host $1k-a-ticket party to celebrate Club World Cup
If you want to celebrate the Club World Cup in New York City with FIFA higher- ups and star players, it will cost you. Big Art, an international event management company, is promoting a gala that will take place on Wall Street and will be attended by FIFA president Gianni Infantino as well as World Cup stars Kaka, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos, among others. The event, billed as 'the official celebration of the FIFA Club World Cup finals,' will also feature a headlining performance by pop star Rita Ora. Ticket prices start at $1,000 per person for the 'silver' category before rising to $2,000 for platinum and $3,000 for black. The event is scheduled for July 10, one day after the second semifinal match and three days before the final. According to The Athletic, FIFA said it would not receive revenue from the event but did not indicate where it would go.

‘Tiny club, huge heart': proud Auckland City coach Posa
AUCKLAND CITY manager Paul Posa was 'thrilled' with his amateur team's 1-1 Club World Cup draw against Boca Juniors on Monday. The New Zealand side, already eliminated, secured perhaps the best result in the club's history in Nashville against the Argentine powerhouses, one of South America's biggest teams. Boca were eliminated from Group C after Benfica edged Bayern Munich 1-0 in the day's other match. 'I'm sorry to break some Boca hearts, but we worked so hard,' said Auckland coach Paul Posa. 'You can't say we haven't learned from the experience of being at the tournament, I'm thrilled for the players and the club, it's wonderful. It's something to go home with.' Posa said it was a great result for football in Oceania. 'I think it's restored a little bit of pride, a little bit of reputation for us,' he added. 'We're a tiny club with a huge heart and that's evident for all to see... 'I think people here just don't have any idea how small a little club we are and where we've come from. So, it's just awesome.' After goalkeeper Nathan Garrow's own goal, Christian Gray, a teacher back home in New Zealand, headed Auckland City level in the second half. Following a weather delay, the team clung on to earn a point and celebrated jubilantly at the end. Boca coach Miguel Angel Russo said his team were distracted by the Benfica result which condemned them to elimination.
