NBA champion Shai Gilgeous-Alexander now Canada's greatest basketball player

National Post3 hours ago

If there was still a debate before Sunday, there's no longer any doubt: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the best Canadian basketball player ever and, even at only 26 years old, he already has the resume to prove it.

Hamilton's finest lifted both the Larry O'Brien and Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player trophies late Sunday night after Oklahoma City's Game 7 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

Gilgeous-Alexander has now done what Steve Nash could not, winning the NBA title (not to mention the league's scoring title). Only Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have claimed regular season and Finals MVP as well as the scoring title in the same season.
Article content
He averaged 29.9 points a game in the playoffs as the centre of attention and the focus of all opposing defences, and as a finale, carried the Thunder early Sunday on the way to a 29-points, 12-assist, one-turnover performance in the biggest game of his life.
Article content
Gilgeous-Alexander didn't worry about missed shots (he went just 8-for-27, his worst shooting game of these playoffs), but still consistently made the right play.
Article content
Game 7s always are a slog, everyone seems to be off (the Thunder hit 40.2% as a team, Indiana 41.4% without even getting to 100 points, but Gilgeous-Alexander consistently found a way to break down the Pacers and finish a storybook season.
Article content
Nash already is in the Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame and now we know Gilgeous-Alexander will join him one day. Only two non-active former Finals MVPs have failed to reach the Hall since the award was first handed out in 1968-69 and Gilgeous-Alexander is just getting started.

This is the fourth year in a row a Canadian has won it all (Andrew Wiggins with Golden State, Jamal Murray with Denver, Oshae Brissett with Boston), with Gilgeous-Alexander and Montreal's Lu Dort becoming the 11th and 12th Canadian NBA champions.

Countrymen Andrew Nembhard and Bennedict Mathurin also put their stamp on the series at various times.

Canada basketball is in a great place.

Once Tyrese Haliburton went down, it was going to be up to Pascal Siakam to pull off another Indiana miracle. He gave it his all, but so many minutes and OKC's fearsome defence seemed to catch up with Siakam.
Article content
Still, it was a hell of a year for the former Raptors great, one that will get him a lot of future all-NBA votes (he already has made the second team and third team once each and was the Eastern Conference final MVP) and firmly put him back on the map as an all-star level player.
Article content
It was interesting to hear Siakam allude afterward to the ugly end to his time with the Raptors. That team wasn't alone in believing Siakam wasn't worth the max contract he was seeking (otherwise it would have been easier to deal him for a far better package than what Indiana offered), but it stung Siakam because of how close he had been with Masai Ujiri and others with the Raptors through his remarkable rise to stardom.
Article content
It ended with a lack of communication between Siakam and the Raptors, Ujiri calling him (and other now former Raptors) selfish in a bizarre media day attack before the ultimate trade and has continued with Siakam not taking part of any of this season's 30th anniversary year retrospectives.

As closer Jeff Hoffman falters, Blue Jays are missing injured Yimi Garcia that much more

It's easy to go 'out of sight, out of mind' with the walking wounded on the Blue Jays roster, though that would be a gross undersell of the team's season to date. Article content Starting pitcher Max Scherzer is the most-celebrated and talked-about one given that, after a 74-game stint on the injured list with a vexing thumb injury, he's due to return to game action on Wednesday in Cleveland. Article content Article content Anthony Santander, the other high-rent off-season acquisition by the Jays, is the big dude rarely talked about now. Sidelined for 21 games with shoulder inflammation (and only vague speculation on when he will return), the former Orioles slugger is almost literally the forgotten man given the virtual invisibility of his first two months as a Blue Jay. Article content But given the sudden wobbles of the Blue Jays bullpen, the one absence that is perhaps most impactful is that of reliever Yimi Garcia, now missing 28 games (and counting) with what the team describes as a shoulder impingement. Article content When the bullpen was humming, Garcia was better than the ideal setup man for closer Jeff Hoffman. The pair provided a dynamic one-two highest-leverage punch at the back end of the bullpen that were a clear strength of the team in the early going. Article content Article content Garcia didn't allow an earned run in 19 of his 21 appearances and none in his first 14 outings while pitching to a tidy 3.15 ERA. Article content But now with Garcia out and Hoffman struggling, there is at minimum a sense of disarray in the Jays 'pen and, at worst, serious concern for manager John Schneider's late-game options. Article content Hoffman, of course, was money in his early days with the Jays, seemingly easily validating general manager Ross Atkins' decision to move on from Canadian closer Jordan Romano. In the first month of the season, Hoffman allowed just one home run and owned a skimpy 1.17 ERA. Article content Article content Since then, there have been issues. His ERA in the interim is a shade over 9.00 and he has surrendered seven homers and nine walks. The latest blip came in Sunday's blown save against the White Sox, an outcome that was undeniably ugly but, in fairness, was caused more by Hoffman's fielding miscue than how he was operating on the mound. Article content After the game, Schneider was adamant that the Jays 'trust the (poop)' out of Hoffman. That may be the case, but the longer Garcia is out, the more the concern about shutting down wins will heighten.

Flames sign forward Justin Kirkland to one-year contract extension

For several weeks last fall, Justin Kirkland was arguably the NHL's best-feel good story. Article content Article content Kirkland, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent, has inked a one-year, one-way contract extension with the Flames. Article content The deal, announced Monday morning, carries a cap-hit of US$900,000 and offers some clarity on who will start next season as Calgary's fourth-line centre. Article content Kirkland, who has spent most of his pro career in the minors, appeared in 21 games with the Flames in 2024-25. 'Costco' had contributed eight points, sniped on three of his four shootout attempts and was emerging as a fan favourite when his breakout campaign was cut short due to an ACL injury. He is now six-plus months into his recovery from knee surgery and should be fully healthy for training camp. Article content While this speedy forward will be challenged to prove he can pick up where he left off before the injury, this feels like a low-risk signing for the Flames. Article content Kirkland is the frontrunner to replace fourth-line centre Kevin Rooney, who will sign elsewhere as a free agent. If he doesn't win that job, he has the versatility to work either wing. Article content If Kirkland struggles to rediscover his game or needs some time to knock off the rust in the minors, he'd be a valuable mentor for the up-and-comers on the Wranglers. They can learn a lot from his resilience — a guy who refused to give up on his NHL dreams, even after a serious car accident in 2023. His inspiring backstory was spotlighted when he buried his first big-league goal last October, and again when he was named the Flames' nominee for the Masterton Trophy. Article content With Friday's news that Dryden Hunt has inked a two-year, two-way deal, Flames general manager Craig Conroy has now re-upped a pair of pending unrestricted free agents. Canada's Gabriel Diallo picks up another win on grass as Wimbledon draws near

Montreal's Gabriel Diallo picked up another win on grass as Canada's tennis players continued to prepare for Wimbledon. Article content The 23-year-old Diallo advanced to the second round of the Mallorca Championships with a 7-5, 6-3 win over local favourite Jaume Munar of Spain on Monday, which took just 56 minutes to complete. Article content Article content The six-foot-eight Diallo fired 10 aces and saved both break points he faced. He broke Munar three times on four chances, including twice in a four-match winning streak to claim the second set. Article content Diallo, 23, who won his first career ATP tournament two weeks ago at the grass-court Libema Open in the Netherlands, entered the tournament with a career-high world ranking of No. 41. He will next face Serbia's Laslo Djere at the ATP 250 grass-court tournament. Article content Meanwhile, the top-seeded team of Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski and partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand were eliminated in the first round of action at the WTA 500 Bad Homburg Open in Germany. Article content Dabrowski, who played her first match after missing a month with a rib issue, seemed poised for a triumphant return after she and Dabrowski took the first set of a match against Taiwan's Wu Fang-Hsien and China's Jiang Xinyu. However, the reigning WTA Finals doubles champions ultimately lost the match 6-7 (7), 7-5, 10-8. Article content
