The graduates completed a six-month Culinary Arts Program, a college-level program where students learn the fundamentals of culinary arts, time management, teamwork and other practical skills.
'The purpose of the program is to provide knowledge, a pathway for a solid career in the restaurant industry,' Waiawa Correctional Facility Education Supervisor Kerry Iwashita said.
For the graduates who want to further their education, the 14 credits earned from the Culinary Arts Program will appear in their University of Hawaiʻi transcripts.
'Sometimes it takes a jarring experience in life for somebody to take life more seriously. When you guys offer opportunities like culinary arts to people in incarceration, you supply us with the strength, hope and determination we need to stay out of prison and make something of ourselves,' graduate Ronald Graham said.
The graduates prepared a mix of savory and sweet dishes for attendees at the luncheon including:
Somen Taco Salad
Giardiniera Salad
BBQ Kalua Pork Quesadillas
Spam Raisu
Lo Mai Gai
Beef Moussaka
Stuffed Eggplant
Honey Walnut Chicken

Captain arrested for DWI after Bronx boat catches fire near Hart Island, 23 hurt
The man operating a boat that burst into flames near Hart Island in the Bronx, prompting the rescue of nearly two dozen injured passengers, was drunk, cops said Sunday. Joshua Brito, 33, was arrested for reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated after the boat burst into flames about 8 p.m. Saturday, an NYPD spokeswoman said. The boat is a 35-foot Carver, according to CBS News New York. Personnel aboard FDNY Marine 4, which was patrolling the water until midnight because of the warm weather, saw the fire and rushed to the scene, where firefighters 'plucked three people out of the water,' FDNY Assistant Chief Michael Meyers said. The rest swam to Hart Island, he said. Marine 6 then arrived to extinguish the flames. Twenty three people were injured escaping the boat, cops said. All are in stable condition, cops said, though firefighters said one was initially taken to Jacobi Medical Center with critical injuries. FDNY officials said 20 of the victims needed to be hospitalized. The injured were all adults, their ages ranging between 18 and 58, cops said. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation and the Coast Guard is probing the incident, police said Sunday. Brito's arraignment was pending in Bronx Criminal Court Sunday. He lives in the Bedford Park area of the Bronx, according to cops.
