The moment I knew: I declined his proposal, then something clicked

The Guardian9 hours ago

It was the day before my 25th birthday in 2005. I was living alone in a flat in Sydney and getting ready for a friend of a friend's 30th that night. I wanted to look vengefully hot for the occasion – someone who had dumped me was going to be there. But later that night I forgot all about my ex.
As I was sitting in the back garden at the party, making balloon animals, I looked up and saw a man wearing a bright blue floral 80s outfit – a dress and matching jacket – with fishnet stockings and a floppy hat. It was a circus freaks-themed party and he was one of only a handful of other guests who had dressed up, the only Bearded Lady among us. His humour and confidence glowed as brightly as his pearl choker and matching clip-on earrings. I instantly sensed a strong connection.
Drew and I followed each other around all evening, trying not to let the other realise it. A few days later I sent him some pictures from the party and we wasted an entire week of our respective employers' time emailing all day every day, each trying to flirtatiously out-funny the other. Finally, I asked him out for a drink.
We started dating and suddenly we'd been together for eight months. Before our first Christmas as a couple, I got wind that he was planning to buy me a kitten. Feeling headstrong about my independence, I gazumped him by buying a kitten for myself. I wasn't ready to share a pet.
We slotted easily into each other's lives, sharing eclectic circles of friends, love for our close families and travel. After a year, he moved from the Central Coast to be closer to me in Sydney; after two, he moved into the flat with me and my cat.
Three years later, alone on a beach in Borneo except for the three men fixing a generator just behind us, Drew proposed to me. I was taken aback. I didn't feel ready to settle down and I said no immediately. 'I'm not ready,' I uttered. Drew simply kissed me and said: 'I'll wait until you are.'
When he said that, something clicked. I realised that whether I was ready was immaterial. I'd never felt ready for anything I've done that was exciting and wonderful and worthwhile. I was ready to not let that stop me.
After a few moments I said yes. It was the best decision I've ever made.
We got married in 2009. We've faced many challenges since – the terminal illness and death of Drew's father, fertility hurdles, the births of two babies who could stay awake for Australia, postpartum depression, and much more – and Drew has been exactly the right balance of strong, brave, funny, sad, vulnerable, supportive, clever, kind and loving.
With Drew as my champion, I said yes to a whole lot more in life too, including writing my first book. In return, it has been the best thing ever to watch as he has thrived in his own life, as an artist. Seeing Drew's work on gallery walls and in people's homes thrills me every time, and there's no one who deserves it more.
As for my kitten, Gusto, she's about to turn 20. Our now-shared cat has always, quite rightly, loved Drew the most.

Nova's Lauren Phillips and her aviation millionaire fiancé Paul O'Brien jet into Sydney together in rare public sighting

Lauren Phillips has been engaged two years but keeps her romance very private. The Nova radio host and her fiancé Paul O'Brien made a rare public appearance together on Sunday however as they arrived at Sydney Airport. The 41-year-old dressed down as she made her way across the terminal with her aviation businessman partner. Lauren opted for a black suede jacket over white shirt and added a pair of cream trousers, as well as matching sneakers. She appeared to have on minimal makeup with her brunette locks down and straightened. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Paul meanwhile kept things comfortable in a pair of blue jeans and a white hoodie, as well as a brown boots. He wheeled along a white suitcase and black sports bag as he left the airport to grab a ride. The couple, who are based in Melbourne, largely avoided being photographed together but headed off in the same vehicle. Last year, Lauren has revealed she has 'gone off' Paul after he decided to do some home decorating while she was away. Lauren said on her Nova 100 Jase & Lauren Show that while she was on a recent work trip to Fiji her entrepreneur partner took his chance to remove a couch he 'hated' and replace it with another model. 'He has this hatred for this beautiful sofa I bought for our new home, Lauren explained to co-stars Jase Hawkins and Clint Stanaway. 'Upstairs, beautiful sofa, white linen, stunning, in the living room. I love it,' she gushed. 'It's linen so you near melt into it.' Lauren said Paul did not like the couch and thought that it belonged in a teenager's bedroom. So when Lauren jetted off, Paul seized his chance. 'He's gone all Darren Palmer on you,' Jase exclaimed as Lauren replied: "He's gone all Shayna Blaze on me. It (the new couch) looks like it belongs in a dentist's reception area.' After pulling up a photo of what he assumed was a similar couch, Jase said it reminded him of the iconic couch on which contestants faced elimination on the Channel 10 reality series Big Brother. 'Is it a big corner one like that? You know what it looks like, the Big Brother couch! You know when Gretel calls them all!' he exclaimed. Lauren added that their other co-host Clint had the exact same opinion when he visited her house the night before. 'Stop, stop, stop,' Lauren exclaimed. 'Because last night Clint came over, And what was the first thing that came out of your mouth?' 'This is the Big Brother couch,' Clint replied. I said the same thing!' Jase punctuated the story by uttering an iconic line from the reality series. 'It's time to go, Paul,' he said. Phillips announced her engagement to multi-millionaire partner live on-air in 2023. She shared the exciting news with her co-host, and spoke about the surprise proposal in Mykonos. O'Brien runs high-end aviation charter group AVMIN and has several celebrity clients, including Matt Damon, his wife Luciana Barroso, Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky. 'We went to Europe for the holidays. We had a few days in Rome just the two of us and I thought if he was going to propose, it would've been the two of us,' she began. 'Then we went to Mykonos and met up with all of our friends and turns out I was the only person who didn't know about it. He proposed in front of all our friends. I had no idea and then next minute he was down on one knee.' The brunette beauty said the public proposal was such a surreal experience that at first she thought Paul was teasing her. 'I think I thought he was joking. It was an out of body experience. I don't think I even looked at the ring. I just hugged him and cried and then we stood up and we all celebrated.' She could not contain her joy when discussing the ultra-romantic proposal. 'Everyone said, "you didn't say yes," and I'm like "of course it is a yes!" We then called my family who were at home at the time. He asked my dad. He is a gentleman,' she added. The notoriously private couple have been dating since early 2020 and lived together in Byron Bay. Paul previously dated former Sunrise host Samantha Armytage from 2018 - 2019. Lauren started dating Paul while she was living in Melbourne at the start of the Covid pandemic in early 2020.

Holly Valance seen for first time without wedding ring after split from £1billion property tycoon Nick Candy revealed

HOLLY Valance has been seen for the first time without her wedding ring following the news of her split from property tycoon Nick Candy. The former Neighbours actress and pop star, 42, was photographed at Heathrow's Terminal 5 wearing a black top, comfy blue jeans, a black cardigan and trainers. 9 9 9 She carried a large suitcase and a £2,500 Christian Dior tote bag as she made her way to a waiting car. It comes after it was revealed that Holly and Nick, 52, are divorcing after 13 years of marriage. Friends told The Sun that the couple had quietly separated in recent weeks. A family friend said: 'This has been a very difficult period for both Nick and Holly, and they are keeping things private out of respect for their family. 'The joint parenting of their two amazing daughters remains their top priority. 'They've had to juggle a demanding lifestyle. Between family, public life, and Nick's intense work commitments, it's been a tough balance.' The couple - prominent figures in right-wing political circles - were last seen together in March during a lunch outing in London. Holly rose to fame in the early 2000s playing Felicity 'Flick' Scully in the Australian soap Neighbours, before launching a pop career. She launched a pop career and her 2002 debut album Footprints produced several hits, including chart-topper Kiss Kiss. But she was sued by her former manager and forced to hand out a £200,000 pay out. Broke, she moved to Los Angeles where she continued her acting career - starring in US TV show Prison Break and appearing alongside Liam Neeson in Taken. Nick, a billionaire property developer, co-founded the luxury real estate business Candy & Candy with his brother Christian in the early 1990s. Their developments include the ultra-exclusive One Hyde Park in London, valued at over £1 billion. The couple married in 2012 in a lavish £3 million ceremony in California attended by 300 guests, including music mogul Simon Cowell. In recent years, Holly and Nick have emerged as vocal supporters of Reform UK. Nick left the Conservative Party last year and was appointed Reform's treasurer in December, pledging to raise tens of millions for leader Nigel Farage — including donating a seven-figure sum himself. Holly has also been a visible presence in political circles. She visited Donald Trump 's Mar-a-Lago estate in 2022 alongside Farage and her husband attended Boris Johnson's wedding celebration in 2021. She is credited with encouraging Farage's return to frontline politics. Speaking last year about her political shift, Holly said:'Everyone starts off as a leftie and then wakes up at some point after making money, working, trying to run a business, trying to buy a home, then realises what crap ideas they all are.' A spokesperson for the couple said: 'This is a private matter and we will not be making any further comment.' 9 9 9

The Bachelor star Laura Byrne reveals her bizarre find in a bag of chips: 'That's so rank'

Laura Byrne has taken to social media to share a bizarre discovery in a recently-bought bag of chips. The former Bachelor star, 39, posted a video to Instagram on Sunday showing a packet of chips she had purchased - with a surprise waiting inside. 'Ok... but wtf is that?' she captioned the post, which showed a strange potato creation in a packet of Kettle chips. 'I can't tell if this is an entire potato, a hash brown, I don't know what it is. Or a lot of chips that have gotten stuck on the conveyor belt together,' she could be heard saying in a follow-up clip. Her husband Matty 'J' Johnson, 37, who she met on the hit reality show in 2017, then asked if he could try a bite of the unidentifiable nugget. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'If you want to, go nuts. Would you? You're disgusting,' the Life Uncut podcast host said as Matty took a bite out of the bizarre find. Laura then played devil's advocate, saying: 'It's probably the best bit of all the chips. You know how like when they are really crunchy?' 'That's pretty good!' her husband announced, with his eyes wide with delight, before Laura proclaimed: 'That's so rank'. Laura recently made headlines for calling out her podcast host husband after he accidentally revealed the name of their unborn baby girl on-air. In June, the reality star was doing an 'ask me anything' questionnaire on her Instagram story when one of her followers brought up the moment, which she was seemingly unaware of. 'Did you punch Matt in the ovaries for revealing [your] baby name on Two Doting Dads?' the question read. Laura was clearly caught off-guard as she replied: 'He did f***ing what?!' Later on, the business owner, 39, brought up the blunder with her husband, 37, as they lay in bed together. 'Matt I have a question for you: did you say the girl's name, the baby's name, on the podcast?' she asked him in a clip posted to her Instagram story. He looked at his partner confused as he denied the accusation. 'I think you might have,' she told him, cheekily. 'I would never, never. Never would I say that,' he said defensively as the couple both broke out into giggles. Laura told the camera: 'People always ask us, "how do you know the limits when you're telling stories and stuff on the podcast?" and normally we're pretty good... Normally.' Matty began to pipe up as he sported a giant smile on his face, clearly telling a fib. 'Whoever is spreading this false information, shame on you, because that's not true at all,' he said. While Matty may have mentioned the little girl's name, it seems it was edited out of the podcast as it could later no longer be found. The couple already share little girls Marlie and Lola, and are expecting their third in October.
