Johnny Cardoso nears move to Atletico Madrid despite Tottenham Hotspur's option for USMNT star
Johnny Cardoso's near-meteoric rise through European club football could soon reach a crescendo as the USMNT midfielder is nearing a move to Atletico Madrid this summer.
The transfer isn't out-of-nowhere, but the destination remains surprising after Tottenham Hotspur secured a unique 'right of first refusal' on the Real Betis midfielder last summer.

Spurs reportedly requested the future rights of Cardoso as part of a deal to bring Giovani Lo Celso in August 2024, and the North London club may wind up with part of the players' sell-on rights if he moves elsewhere.
A move to Atletico Madrid — expected to start at approximately $35 million — is intriguing for the United States men's national team, as Mauricio Pochettino would likely be thrilled at the concept of the already-menacing Cardoso playing a meaningful role for Diego Simeone. The Atleti futures of 33-year-old captain Koke and 31-year-old Rodrigo de Paul are reportedly in flux, and there's a bonus if they stay and Cardoso can learn under two of the world's very best at his position.
Betis are headed for the Europa League next season, so Cardoso has no need to accept a move in order to keep growing his game. Atleti and Spurs are big, big destinations, and both the players and even Betis may want to strike with the iron as hot as possible.

Of course there's the danger of Cardoso being behind such players or a similar purchase, but Simeone is purchasing a player who starred in La Liga and led Real Betis to the Conference League Final under Manuel Pellegrini.
Still 23 under September, the American-born Cardoso took little time to adjust to Spain following a move from Brazil's Internacional in January 2024. The gem unearthed for the USMNT by Gregg Berhalter rung up almost 3,400 minutes this past season, scoring four times with an assist.
He hasn't been a passing star by any means, but he's an instinctive, elite reader of the game. Cardoso ranks in the 98th percentile for interceptions and 93rd percentile for clearances, with FBref.com comparing him favorably to Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi and Aston Villa's Amadou Onana.
As for the USMNT, his partnership with Tyler Adams at this summer's Gold Cup could up the battle for starting spots at the 2026 World Cup as Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah watch from afar.

(AP Photo/Nate Billings) OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The NBA's talks with FIBA and other entities about the process of adding a new league in Europe are continuing, Commissioner Adam Silver said, though he noted that it may take at least a couple more years to turn the ideas into reality. Silver spoke at a league event to unveil a refurbished Boys & Girls Club in Oklahoma City on Friday — an off day for the NBA Finals — and said it's difficult to put a specific timeline on the Europe plans. Advertisement 'I will say it's measured in years, not months,' Silver said. 'So, we're at least a couple years away from launching. It would be an enormous undertaking. And while we want to move forward at a deliberate pace, we also want to make sure that we're consulting with all the appropriate stakeholders, meaning the existing league, its teams, European players, media companies, marketing partners. There's a lot of work to be done.' Silver and FIBA secretary general Andreas Zagklis announced in March that the league and the game's governing body are finally taking long-awaited steps to form a new league, with an initial target of 16 teams. It had been talked about for years, and decades even on some levels. And since the NBA and FIBA went public with their idea to move forward, talks have gotten more constructive, Silver said. Silver said the NBA has been talking directly with the EuroLeague and with some member clubs about a partnership. It's his preference that the NBA work with the existing league on some level, though it's still too early to say exactly what that means. 'Either way, we continue to feel there are an enormous number of underserved basketball fans in Europe and that there's a strong opportunity to have another league styled after the NBA,' Silver said. Advertisement About one in every six current NBA players hails from Europe, including Denver's Nikola Jokic (Serbia) and Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece) — who have combined for five of the last seven MVP awards — along with the Los Angeles Lakers' Luka Doncic (Slovenia) and San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama (France). The NBA's board of governors will talk more about next steps with the European plans in July at their scheduled meeting in Las Vegas, Silver said. It's possible that the European venture could be unveiled in some way — or possibly start — around the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, just given how much attention will be on international basketball at that time. 'That might be a good launching pad for an announcement around a new competition,' Silver said. Some of the cities that are expected to have interest in being part of the new venture include London, Manchester, Rome and Munich. There will be others, of course. Champ leads Canadian Open as McIlroy crashes to missed cut

Taylor the 2023 champion, posted a five-under 65 while Lee carded a six-under 64. Perez made four of his six birdies on the back nine on the way to a 65. I was like, you know, I'm just going to bring it in case for whatever reason, not even thinking about the tournament." Not only did Champ take the schedule shake-up in stride, he embraced the opportunity after a couple of years in which "off course stuff" had made it "a little rough for me to even be out here. "For me, it's just a refresher to kind of be free in a sense ... I could care less what I shoot. "These last two days, it was just a joy for me to be able to play like that." Elizabeth Szokol birdies first five holes, shares lead at ShopRite LPGA Classic
GALLOWAY, N.J. — Elizabeth Szokol birdied the first five holes and shot an 8-under 62 on Friday for a share of the first-round lead with Ilhee Lee in the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Playing in the afternoon on Seaview's Bay Course, Szokol followed her opening birdie run with a bogey on No. 6, then added birdies on Nos. 8, 9, 13 and 16. 'Happy to get off to a great start and really looking forward to the weekend,' Szokol said. 'Lots of golf left. Really excited to see good golf and hard work paying off today.' The 30-year-old American teamed with Cheyenne Knight to win the 2023 Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational for her only tour victory.
