Ah, the daily commute: heavy traffic, potholes, and terrible drivers. It's enough to make you forget that driving can be fun. However, all is not lost and choosing the right car can inject fizz back into driving, but which should you choose? An athletic Lotus Emira or a brawny Ford Mustang? And so the battle of muscle car vs sports car begins.
First, ask yourself: does tire smoke and a thumping V8 give you tachycardia or a headache?
Still not sure? Here's a rundown of each category, starting with those at home on winding tarmac - the sports car.
Sports cars provide driving thrills without stepping too much into silly supercar territory. They're designed to engage the driver, and conjure laughter between cabin occupants as you nose its chassis into tight bends with gusto. Their engines might not be V8-symphonic, but are often charismatic and well-suited. Lightweight components and slippery low-slung bodywork top things off. And finally, many have convertible roofs or removable hard tops, meaning you can soak up the sun when weather permits. These are cars for those who enjoy fast backroad drives.
However, there are some downsides to sports car ownership: squeezing in a stroller is often impossible, harsher suspension could dislodge your spine, insurance is usually expensive, and maintenance bills typically cause great sorrow.

Then there's the muscle car, the gym-goer of the motoring world. They're obnoxious in the best possible way. Under their broad bodies and boxy shape is often a naturally aspirated or supercharged V8 which feeds monstrous torque to the rear wheels via either a manual or automatic gearbox.
Unlike the sports car, corners aren't quite its thing. It won't fall over going round one, but you could find yourself in a hedge if you're overzealous with your right foot. These are cars for those who enjoy powering down straight tarmac with dramatic flair, and are for those who don't mind attention.
It sounds great, but like sports cars, muscle cars have downsides too. Heavy bodywork and colossal drivetrains mean poor economy, older cars often lack creature comforts and safety tech, most aren't environmentally friendly, they often have odd wheel sizes, and take up two car parking spaces, well, in the U.K. at least.
This comes down to preference and bank balance. The used car market is filled with sports cars like the Nissan 350Z, Honda S2000, Porsche Boxster, Mazda MX-5 (Miata), and E85/E86 BMW Z4. Most have different engine options (350z aside) with varying power outputs, too.
Fancy a new sports car? An entry-level BMW Z4 is priced from £46,545 ($54,500) while the M40i costs £58,970 ($67,000). The £202,900 ($253,100) McLaren Artura and £200,000 ($197,200) Porsche 911 Turbo are great choices for those with deeper pockets.

Similarly, a manufacturer warranty often backs a new car, while used examples could be warranty-free, meaning you'll pick up any repair bills.
Most sports cars, even the rawest, can be good daily drivers unless you have mountains of work equipment.
The character of older muscle cars is tough to beat. There were no zealous safety systems in the 1960s, and firing up the engine from cold would rattle house windows. This, combined with swapping cogs via a four-on-the-floor transmission, made muscle car ownership rewarding.
Gargantuan power outputs (700bhp-plus) are often conjured from fairly regular displacements; gone are the times when engines exceeded 7 liters, but this is due to various regulations. Many modern muscle cars use forced induction to deliver impressive power while maintaining fuel efficiency. Likewise, stricter noise emission regulations mean quieter exhausts.

Like many sports cars, older muscle cars are generally terrible daily drivers, something worth remembering if you're swapping out your Toyota Camry. Older muscle cars include the Dodge Charger, Ford Mustang, Pontiac GTO, Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, Buick GSX, and Plymouth Hemi Cuda.
Many modern examples carry classic badges but with more modern tech. These include the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger R/T, and Ford Mustang GT.
The trade-off between old and new lies with character and driveability. Older muscle cars ooze character but can be tiresome to drive daily while newer muscle cars often lack the analogue temperament of predecessors but are easier to live with.
Remember, it's your money and the decision on whether to choose a muscle car or sports car should be based on preference rather than persuasion. If straight lines and V8 soundtracks are favored, buy a muscle car. Prefer fast cornering? The sports car is for you.

The so-called "Fox body" Ford Mustangs, the third-generation cars built from 1979 through 1993, are enjoying a sort of nostalgia-driven renaissance in interest these days. Unsurprisingly, this is because those who were young when the Fox bodies were on sale are now older, maybe with some extra cash and spare garage space to start collecting these Mustangs off-lawn, so to speak. How "in" are Fox bodies these days? Ford is even getting in on the action with a new FX package that celebrates the Mustang defined by the 1980s. This isn't the first time Ford has dipped into Fox-body lore lately, either—when the current Mustang arrived for 2024, its digital gauge cluster even included a setting that recreates the Fox body's old-school analog gauge pack. The FX package takes the nostalgia a lot further, of course, with white badges, white wheels, retro "Mustang" lettering, and more. It's available only on the Mustang GT Premium trim level, on both the coupe and convertible, and with or without the Performance package. It Ain't Real If It Ain't Teal Ford doesn't choose just any white paint for the FX package; since all things Mustang must treat time like a flat circle, everything you see painted white is, specifically, painted Oxford White, a hue that was available on the original Mustang. It's used for the "GT" badges, wheels, retro "Mustang" sticker on the rear glass (coupe only), and the "nostrils" in the grille on Performance package variants. There are two wheel designs and both evoke classic Fox body designs, with the version you see here adopting a slick turbofan style. The other version—for non-Performance-pack cars—is a classic five-spoke. Both wear color-matched center caps bearing "Mustang GT" lettering in what Ford says is a new font (that happens to look like an old, Fox-body font, but who's keeping close track?). Oh, and speaking of paint, the FX package introduces a new-for-2026 paint color (which also will be available on other '26 Mustangs): Adriatic Blue Metallic. Put simply, it's a rad teal color (pictured here)—what could be more Fox-body-era than that? Another new paint color this year is Orange Fury Metallic. It has no specific history linked to the Fox body, it's just worth mentioning since it hasn't been offered on the Mustang since 2019. Pivotal Digital Setting aside how blown peoples' minds would have been if, in the 1980s, their Fox body Mustangs came with the sort of digitized dashboard that today's Mustang gets (FX package included), Ford has put some effort into backdating the FX's interior. Plaid-like seat inserts do a lot of the heavy lifting here, but remember, there's always that Fox body gauge cluster option. Less obvious is the Dark Alley interior trim borrowed from the Mustang Dark Horse model, as well as subtle blue stitching and a "Mustang GT" badge on the passenger-side dash. Ford hasn't outlined the FX package's price yet, but mentions that order books for the 2026 Mustang lineup overall open in later in June 2025. We'll surely find out then how much this retro FX package (and the Mustang overall) costs. But if you want to rock out with your 1980s out in a new-generation Mustang, you should definitely peep this one.

The Lotus Emira has been updated with a series of refinements that promise to bring both a more engaging drive and greater levels of comfort. The Emira V6 SE (priced from £96,500) gets retuned dampers and new alignment settings that are said to improve both its ride and handling. Its manual gearbox also gets new mounts that are intended to improve the precision of gearchanges. Autocar previously found it prone to hesitation when slotting the gearlever into higher ratios when rushing a shift. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-AMG-powered four-cylinder Emira Turbo (from £79,500) gets a reworked dual-clutch automatic gearbox that is said to change gears more quickly and be smoother in its delivery. Both versions get updated cooling systems with rerouted lines, improving flow to the gearbox oil cooler and the main radiator. Lotus said this reduces temperatures and sheds weight, although it has yet to specify how much lighter the new Emira is. It has also recalibrated the engine thermostat so that it doesn't open until 75deg C – up 10deg C on its current specification – to improve performance in hotter climes. As well as technical updates, Lotus has introduced a new Racing Line trim for both the Turbo and V6 models. This adds a lower-body pinstripe in yellow, red or silver, mirror caps painted the same colour and monochrome exterior badging. It costs an extra £3000. ]]>

"That's been the biggest weapon of mine and I've raced the best drivers in the world for the past three years, so I've learned a lot and I feel I can take that with me to the future and hopefully when I get back to the Cup Series, I'll be ready to go again and understand and fire off with some pace."
