Boy 'hacked to death in an instant by man with Samurai sword' on way to school
A man 'snuffed out the life' of a 14-year-old boy after attacking him with a Samurai sword as he walked to school, a court has heard.
Daniel Anjorin, 14, was 'essentially near-decapitated' in Hainault, north London, in April last year as Marcus Aduini Monzo carried out a '20 minute brutal string of attacks'.
The schoolboy was wearing headphones and sports clothes when he left home at 7am before he was 'slain' by Monzo, prosecutor Tom Little KC told the Old Bailey.
He sustained a 'devastating and unsurvivable chopping injury to the left hand side of his face and neck'.
Monzo, 37, seriously injured four others denies murder and four counts of attempted murder.
The prosecution argued he knew none of his victims, and carried out the attack 'indiscriminately'.
It is alleged the first attack was when Monzo drove his grey Ford Transit van at speed into Donato Iwule.
The pedestrian was knocked into a nearby garden on Laing Close and the vehicle smashed a concrete pillar and fence, the court heard.
The defendant then exited his vehicle and struck Mr Iwule in the neck with the sword, jurors were told.
Mr Little told jurors: 'If he had not managed to escape it seems inevitable that he too would have been killed.'
Footage played to the court appeared to feature Mr Iwule wailing and later running away after the alleged murder attempt that started at 6.51am.
He told jurors that they may conclude 'there can be little doubt that the defendant was intending to kill as many people as he could that day'.
The defendant then re-entered the badly damaged van and drove a short distance down Laing Close, the court heard.
Emergency services were called and police and paramedics arrived 'at the point and just after' the alleged attack.
Pc Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield pursued the armed defendant through a series of alleyways through residential properties, the court heard.
Monzo struck her three times with the sword that had a 60cm blade, the prosecutor said.
She sustained 'significant injuries' that could have 'easily' killed her, he added.
Monzo is accused of then entering a nearby house through a backdoor and walking upstairs into a sleeping couple's bedroom and attacking them.
Their daughter was sleeping in a bed next to theirs and Mr Little said: 'They were spared only because in fact the four-year-old child woke up and started to cry.'
The defendant shouted to the couple on a number occasions, 'do you believe in god?' before leaving the property through the front door, the court heard.
Police had been following the defendant and he was backed into a nearby garage area near to the other alleged attacks, the court heard.
He is accused of then striking Inspector Moloy Campbell once with the sword before attempting to escape police.
The defendant is said to have climbed on top a garage but he was eventually disarmed and arrested.
Monzo denies Daniel's murder, and has pleaded not guilty to the attempted murders of Donato Iwule, Sindy Arias, Henry De Los Rios Polania and Pc Yasmin Margaret Mechem-Whitfield as well as wounding Inspector Moloy Campbell with intent. More Trending
He also denies aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article relating to a kitchen knife.
Mr Little argued there is 'no issue in this trial as to who carried out this brutal string of attacks and what the defendant did on that fateful early morning'.
He said Monzo had been under the influence of cannabis, and that: 'We say that the defendant's conduct was brought about by self-induced intoxication in the form of drugs.
'We say this led to a psychotic disorder but not one meeting the requirements to make out the partial defence to murder of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.'

Geoffrey Baulcomb, 79, was captured on a nine-second video performing the procedure, which involved enlarging the opening of a man's urethra, on January 4, 2020, the Old Bailey previously heard. He was arrested in connection with the incident in December 2022. Baulcomb was ordained as a priest in 1970 and worked in Chichester, West Sussex, according to the Church of England website. The defendant, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, pleaded guilty to one count of causing grievous bodily harm with intent as he appeared in person at the same court on Friday. Wearing a black suit and blue tie, he spoke only to confirm his identity and enter the plea during the brief hearing. Baulcomb previously admitted to distributing an indecent photo of a child in March 2020 and three counts of making indecent images of children on or before December 2022. Greek tourist 'was stabbed to death on his doorstep for his man bag after attackers followed him home from West End nightclub'
A Greek tourist who was stabbed on the way home from a West End nightclub was killed for his man bag, a court has heard. Antonios Antoniadis, 26, was attacked as he got out of an Uber following a night out at 32 Portland Place in Marylebone, London last July. A group of five killers had been sitting in a stolen Kia Sportage looking for a victim to rob when they saw the holidaymaker walk past, jurors at the Old Bailey heard. Joshua McCorquodale, 20, Shian Johnson, 25, Sofian Alliche, 20, Alfie Hipple, 18, and an unnamed 17-year-old then allegedly followed him all the way to his friend's house in New Cross, southeast London, before four attempted to take the item while one sat in the car. Mr Antoniadis then struck one of them with a brandy bottle, before he was stabbed and left on the ground as the group sped off in the vehicle, which had been seen outside the club for several hours ahead of the attack, the court heard. The visitor survived for two weeks in hospital before dying of his injuries on July 21, 2024. All five accused deny murder and conspiracy to rob. Prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones said: 'Mr Antoniadis was here in London on holiday, a tourist who had come on holiday from his home in Greece. 'He had come with a couple of his friends, Maria and Tia, they were spending the week seeing the city, staying with a friend, having some fun. 'That night, they ended up in a nightclub in the West End called 32 Portland Place, not far from Oxford Circus. It was it seemed quite a night out - they didn't even get to the club until just after 4am and they didn't leave the club until about 8.15am. 'As they travelled out of central London, they had no idea that they were being followed. They had no idea that five young men had been hanging around outside that nightclub all night in a stolen car looking for someone they could rob. 'They followed him for over half an hour, all the way to Florence Terrace, New Cross. 'As Maria struggled to find the key to open the door, Antonis was approached by four figures in hoods and balaclavas, four of them, because one of the five, the driver, had stayed in the car to turn it around and prepare for their getaway. 'Antonis resisted, and struggled, and at one point managed to hit one of his attackers with a brandy bottle he was still holding from his night out. 'At least two of the attacking group had with them large knives. One of them shouted "ching him", in other words, stab him. 'Antonis was by now on the ground, one his hands and knees, surrounded by the four robbers who were punching and kicking him, and then they stabbed him. 'He suffered cuts and bruises to his face and head, wounds to his arms as he tried to defend himself, and he was stabbed in the middle of the chest he suffered a large and deep stab wound to his right thigh which completely severed his femoral artery and caused catastrophic blood loss. 'His four attackers then ran back to the waiting car, they jumped in and their driver sped them away, leaving their victim bleeding to death behind them.' He added that the prosecution's case described them as equally responsible for the murder. 'They were clearly prepared to use violence to try and pull off the robbery, and given that they had at least two large knives between them, they were clearly prepared to use really serious violence if the need arose,' Mr Jones said. 'The need did arise, at least as far as they were concerned, and so they used their knives, they stabbed Antonis, and they killed him.' The trial continues and is set to last six weeks.
